drdunce··on 'Positive review only': Researchers hide AI prompts in papers
That sounds like very much like the reviews I used to get on papers at top tier conferences before the advent of LLMs.
drdunce··on ClojureScript from First Principles [video]
It's rare I have to do anything client side, but I'm so grateful for Clojurescript when I do. I used to dread native Javascript and the crazy tooling, but Clojurescript makes building client side functionality an absolute joy. It's just a shame it's not all that popular
drdunce··on Ask HN: Is there a business for extracting US tech talent?
Unfortunately, there isn't demand and there's no such thing as a high demand tech professional anymore. The EU is way over saturated with tech talent and that's unlikely to change.
drdunce··on Mathematicians hunting prime numbers discover infinite new pattern

drdunce··on Fix "pulsing" sensation when charging MacBook
My frustratingly rubbish M1 Air does this, amongst many other odd and annoying things. But hey... what are the alternatives?
drdunce··on Using Microsoft's New CLI Text Editor on Ubuntu
Although most terminals (stty)/UI wrappers/multiplexers etc. would allow this as a configuration, I believe ElementaryOS and others are deliberately setup out the box to offer a Windows-like experience, including preserving keyboard shorts, without further configuration if this is what you seek.
drdunce··on I will do anything to end homelessness except build more homes (2018)
There's not really an issue with planning. The actual problem is that developers will then sit on that land rather than build on it, as this is more valuable long term. See "land banks"
drdunce··on BMW ConnectedDrive lets me control my returned rental car (Sixt)
I don't have a BMW, so I may be wrong, but from the comments it sounds as though:

1) physical access gives remote privileged access - this is a car, not a server! We don't lock cars in data centers, friends, family, mechanics, the car wash, valets or an entire custom base in this case may have access.

2) there is an idiosyncratic process that must be followed to ensure the vehicle is suitable for this use which is sufficiently obscure that it's often overlooked. The risks of which, are quite grave (remote tracking).

3) even if everything is done "correctly", it will limit the functionality to the product you've paid to rent.

drdunce··on BMW ConnectedDrive lets me control my returned rental car (Sixt)
I'm baffled how we've come to accept such poor quality software in our products and key services. We seem to shrug off software issues that would deter purchase if they were material or mechanical.
drdunce··on Ask HN: Go deep into AI/LLMs or just use them as tools?
Really?
drdunce··on Ask HN: Go deep into AI/LLMs or just use them as tools?
I just wanted to second the previous comment, and this is even for adjacent fields. Also a PhD AI/ML grad, and so many of us are out of work at the moment that we'll happily settle for prompt engineering roles, let alone RAG etc., just to maintain appearances on CVs/eligibilty for possible future roles.
drdunce··on 'It cannot provide nuance': UK experts warn AI therapy chatbots are not safe
Are you suggesting working flexibly (maybe "agile"), is at odds with working ethically?
drdunce··on 'It cannot provide nuance': UK experts warn AI therapy chatbots are not safe
As with many things in relation to technology, perhaps we simply need informed user choice and responsible deployment. We could start by not using "Artificial Intelligence" - that makes it sound like a some infallible omniscient being with endless compassion and wisdom that can always be trusted. It's not intelligent, it's a large language model, a convoluted next word prediction machine. It's a fun trick, but shouldn't be trusted with Python code, let alone life advice. Armed with that simple bit of information, the user is free to choose how they use it for help, whether it be medical, legal, work etc.
drdunce··on Ubuntu 25.10 Moving Ahead with Plans for Migrating to Rust Coreutils
This will no doubt be very elegantly implemented.
drdunce··on Ask HN: For those trying to hire how hard is it to find people currently?
Ok, fair enough, "top" has been redefined in our field. PhD research scientists with decades of software dev experience are going cheap. It might not be the exact candidate you want, but they're not really mediocre. If it was any other field, decades of experience and a PhD would be considered a "top" player.
drdunce··on Ask HN: For those trying to hire how hard is it to find people currently?
It's incredibly easy to find people, there's a huge surplus of talent and very few opportunities going. You can scoop up top engineers laid off from big tech companies for small change right now.
drdunce··on The Haskell job market has been growing steaily since 2008
I agree re. graph but I think the definition of "IT employment" is constantly broadening, rather than the opportunities growing. Every job is now apparently an IT job, but fewer and fewer require skilled workers.
drdunce··on PhD Simulator

drdunce··on PhD Simulator

drdunce··on How to convert a gas car to an EV
From a car ownership perspective, it seems a huge shame to spend that much money removing most of the character, soul and experience of a classic piece of history, to just retain its looks. I find it very superficial.

But from an engineering standpoint, it's very interesting nonetheless.

drdunce··on I ditched my car – and improved my fitness, sleep and bank balance
Diogenes also disliked the artificial and believed humans would do well to return to nature. A car is a key to straddle existing in the practicalities of the unavoidable modern day artificial, while also being able to get a taste of what is real once in a while by visiting maybe a forest/mountain/lake etc. Ironically, it seems he has severed his ability to achieve that trapping himself in the artificial.
drdunce··on The Most Cited AI Papers in 2022
Far more from industry than academia.
drdunce··on Just know stuff (or, how to achieve success in a machine learning PhD)
I think every significant model has come from industry. us postdocs just tweak hyperparameters and publish answers to questions about them that no one is ever likely to ask

It's like the "will it blend" series, but for machine learning

drdunce··on Just know stuff (or, how to achieve success in a machine learning PhD)
Same. Have the PhD also. Never even go to first round of interviews, or hear back.

And to get to this level of understanding takes around a decade. Feels like a huge waste of time. The things you could be in a decade of work...

drdunce··on Can video games change people’s minds about the climate crisis?
Pleasantly surprised. When I saw the headline I thought it was going to be a game about gluing yourself to things.

It says:

Improved circulation: Wearing your socks inside out can help improve circulation in your feet and lower legs, which can help prevent varicose veins and other circulation issues.

Better hygiene: The inside of your socks is typically cleaner than the outside, so by wearing them inside out, you can keep your feet cleaner and reduce your risk of foot odor and other hygiene issues.

Increased durability: The inside of your socks is typically more durable than the outside, so by wearing them inside out, you can help prolong the life of your socks and save money in the long run.

Better grip: The inside of your socks is typically more textured than the outside, which can provide better grip and traction when you're walking or running.

Fashion statement: Wearing your socks inside out can be a unique and eye-catching fashion statement that sets you apart from the crowd.

Personalized look: You can also customize your socks by cutting and sewing them to create a personalized look.

Easy to remember: If you're someone who often struggles to match your socks, by wearing them inside out it will be easy to remember which one is which!

drdunce··on Share of car buyers with a monthly payment of more than $1k hits record high
Sorry, consumable was completely the wrong choice of word. It is of course not intended to be replaced. That's the problem.

The batteries have been reported to deteriorate to subpar performance at a rate similar to that of a part on an ICE vehicle that would be a consumable [1] (also shown by the links you provided).

For example, around the time an ICE car might ordinarily undergo a major service (e.g. timing belt).

I was speculating that the fact it deteriorates and isn't an inexpensive consumable, may be why people are choosing not to purchase them outright.

drdunce··on Share of car buyers with a monthly payment of more than $1k hits record high
I wonder if EVs contribute to this at all. Apart from being more expensive than ICE equivalents, the fact a large percentage of the vehicle cost (the battery) is a non replaceable consumable, would seem to make renting the most sane way of purchasing one.
