Apps integrate with the entire rich ecosystem of the device and web apps barely / inconsistently do. There is work happening on all of the above things (kind of), but the experiences arent competitive, the work is piecemeal and the pace is far too slow for people who have the webs best interests at heart. The web is losing because the consensus model for standardising and making available the tools for building the web is antiquated and terribly ineffective. Unless there is a massive change in incentives for standards committees and mobile browser providers this wont change.
Subscriptions and rev shares are generally far less friction than charging up an account and explicitly giving a micropayment to an artist. I think SoundCloud already is a "marketplace" where independent artists can function without labels (if they want to do all the other work that labels cover), just that currently all transactions happen outside of the platform. That said, I don't have any more info about how a premium subscription for users would function.
If a user (currently US only) is listening to their stream and they start playing a track a premier member has decided to monetise an ad will play in front of it. There are some other factors that will influence ad frequency obviously, but that is the general behaviour.
Is this limitation in ember because of the computed properties? Would changing this even help?
If Google is going to "sunset" apps which are being judged as successful after only a couple of weeks, why bother with the bait and switch? Why don't they just tell everybody that they were acquired purely for talent, there wasn't really interest in certain developing products, and that here is your new "just as exciting and fun" project at Google? Seems like a waste of everyone's time, money, and trust to lead people along as if their idea in development actually mattered.
