dwrowe··on Migrating from AWS to Hetzner
In my experience, there has been an interesting ebb and flow on the use of 'dedicated' hardware and auto-scaling power of AWS/cloud instances. When first starting out, super cost-conscious, you're getting ideal performance. As soon as you start experiencing interesting traffic patterns, auto-scaling makes sense. Then, your bill grows to such a point as it makes economical sense to pull back to more powerful dedicated services, then lean a little into auto-scaling, etc. A pendulum of underlying services and people to support it. A balancing act of finding efficiencies during wild growth periods, and reaching some sense of stability.
dwrowe··on OpenAlternative – open-source Alternatives to Popular Software
What's funny is you thinking there is a purity test that should be applied here.
dwrowe··on Show HN: Uncurl.dev – Convert curl commands to a shareable, executable UI
There is both this post about not being able to delete a curl, and other posts about being able to delete curls unauthenticated. Looks like you should be able to issue a DELETE curl request, to delete your curl.
dwrowe··on Beeper Mini is now open-source
Going down the protocol route here - this would be more like Sony blocking game developers from allowing interoperability between Playstations and Xboxes. Crossplay is most definitely a thing - without requiring Xbox versions of games running on Sony hardware.
dwrowe··on Endurain: Self-hosted Strava like service
It works like this if you're simply using the Apple Workouts app on your watch, instead of the Strava app. If you use the Strava app, it'll upload directly, as well as, write to your Health data. If you use Apple Workouts, it'll detect the workout for Import (if you don't automatically import), and read that from Health.
dwrowe··on JPL Horizons Sending Too Many Emails
It’s really a great solution in a long-running job situation, the more I think about it. Especially on your point about setting up infrastructure. Email, in this case, is effectively a webhook handler for their results. Doesn’t require the end user to maintain the endpoint though, and can leverage the existing redelivery attempts, etc. May not be the “coolest” - but leverages decades of accumulated knowledge and reusable solutions.
dwrowe··on Lufthansa bans AirTags in checked luggage
I’d interpret this as a “pay attention and be ready” rather than something from the phone itself.
dwrowe··on The obsessive pleasures of mechanical-keyboard tinkerers
That applies to basically any hobby though right? The perceived depth of the hobby is largely dependent on your desire to explore that depth. It can be incredibly deep for some, as evidenced by people designing their own switches - or shallow (for you) by saying Cherry is good enough.
dwrowe··on Ploopy open source thumb trackball
This simply reminds me of the absolute graveyard of Logitech M570s that I’m holding on to for some reason. A couple have worn out switches, others need cleaned. Love the thumb trackball.
dwrowe··on Twitter accounts dropping “.eth” from usernames
.xyz has a public resolver for ETH addresses for browsers so - foo.eth - you could type in foo.eth.xyz and it'll resolve to a placeholder of sorts for information in the .eth profile (pointers to wallets, Twitter handles, NFTs currently held, etc). I think it's interesting in the "online business card" sense - but not too much beyond that.

EDIT: Apologies - as pointed out below - not my intent to align the site with the TLD - I could have worded that better. I think the domain is more likely a product of the ENS team, but I don't know for certain.

dwrowe··on That wild Ask a Manager story
For me - it becomes an agenda when they’re collecting the information for no other reason than to collect the information - or - they’re using the field to show how progressive they are. Unless gendering language is somehow critical to the operation of the software - why collect it at all? I have the same feeling about birthdays - I’m automatically assuming it’s because you have “sell customer data” on the 5-year business plan.
dwrowe··on Parents built a school app. Then the city called the cops
Hello fellow Nebraskan! If you’d extend this to Elkhorn my kids (and I) would think you’re a wizard!
dwrowe··on How to Create a SaaS and Compete with the Big Players as a Solo Founder
They typically move more slowly - have more layers of design by committee than you will. They’ve already built a large ship that requires movement, you’re in a speedboat. Sure, they can crush you, if you move at the same speed and in the same direction - use your agility to move.
dwrowe··on Emergency SOS on Your iPhone
Assume good faith.
dwrowe··on Emergency SOS on Your iPhone
I think this response assumes snark in the post - since emergency calling has been around and is a feature of the phone - has something notable happened that would bubble this up. I don't believe the intent was to assume this didn’t belong - but a request for more context on why it was being posted / voted up.
dwrowe··on Why does man print “gimme gimme gimme” at 00:30? (2017)
If anything - they should add an additional test/assertion that they receive “gimme gimme gimme” half past midnight!
dwrowe··on I quit my job to focus on SerenityOS full time
He opened with the explanation of doing this after coming out of rehab for drug addiction - I wouldn’t say it is related to “religion”, rather a nod/reminder for himself in why he’s doing it. Nothing beyond that it seems.
dwrowe··on HashCow, BTC.TOP have halted China operations after Beijing crackdown on Bitcoin
How does an “unbanked” person convert their fiat currency into crypto? Is there someone taking in reasonably large sums of untracked cash and sending crypto to wallets? (I genuinely am unaware)
dwrowe··on Ask HN: What happens when someone copies an NFT onto another blockhain?
Because they’re still “almost”. The NFT is made up of digits values that can be replicated exactly - a brush stroke or photography negative cannot.
dwrowe··on Why Wasn't Ruby 3 Faster?
Easier to blame the seemingly nameless technology and completely change the conversation by using some other stack entirely that accounted for your lack of due diligence.
dwrowe··on Microsoft Put Off Fixing Zero Day for 2 Years
Maybe if the exploit is actually leveraged to cause damages. Outside of that, you think they should get fined because the possibility for exploit is there?

Edit: missing clarity - I think fines are appropriate when/if damage occurs, my reply was based on if notification happens without actively being exploited.

dwrowe··on Levandowski sentenced to 18 months in prison as new lawsuit against Uber filed
Previous poster didn’t claim billion dollars in revenue - just that to become a billionaire. Take Facebook acquisitions for example - WhatsApp, Oculus - low headcount (less than 500) for multiple billions.
dwrowe··on The FBI is secretly using Sabre as a global travel surveillance tool
If that is true - I can buy a POLICE Velcro badge on eBay, stick it on, and start detaining people? Genuinely, that’d be my fear. I recognize I’d then be impersonating a police officer - but without further identification, there is a huge gap in accountability, right? Someone swipes people off the street - and bystanders have zero recourse to identify and followup on the person detained - they have no idea what agency detained them. That’s how you disappear people.
dwrowe··on Launch HN: Carve (YC S19) – Rent Cars from Local Dealerships
Many major credit cards include a rental car provision, if you use the card to pay for the rental - definitely worth looking at that, as it saves money, and you have an established relationship with the card company.
dwrowe··on Forget philanthropy. The super-rich should be paying proper taxes
Tax avoidance is not the same as tax evasion - moving money into trusts or donor-advised funds, QOZs, etc - isn't evasion.
dwrowe··on Forget philanthropy. The super-rich should be paying proper taxes
They're not paying 25% of their income in taxes - they're paying maybe 1-2% ? https://files.taxfoundation.org/20190719104737/TF_2018TaxDat...
dwrowe··on Forget philanthropy. The super-rich should be paying proper taxes
My point was - I can be okay with them not paying more, and it isn’t because I think I’ll be a billionaire someday.
dwrowe··on Forget philanthropy. The super-rich should be paying proper taxes
The “temporarily embarrassed” take is tired. I can believe Jeff Bezos should pay the same tax rate as I do, regardless of his ability to pay more, without having my reasoning be because I assume I’ll be a billionaire someday.

Amazon still pays to register vehicles, so they’re paying for roads as much as anyone that uses them, right? I work from home, and pay as much for the roads as my neighbor who commutes. Is that fair? No - but I’m completely fine with it.

dwrowe··on Forget philanthropy. The super-rich should be paying proper taxes
This is such a tired take. Is it not possible to just believe that a person shouldn’t HAVE to pay more (percentage-wise) in taxes because they’re successful - while at the same time, be fine with the credits / deductions available to the less fortunate? I can’t be the unicorn here.
dwrowe··on AWS NLB now supports multiple TLS certificates via SNI
25 cert limit? When will something release that supports hundreds/thousands without having to manage it? Especially for hosting services in particular.
