ece··on 5 years of litigation: Meta apparently switches to consent for behavioral ads
EU regulation has gotten far more right than wrong when it comes to tech.
ece··on Linux security mitigation broken for a year without anyone noticing
There are layers.
ece··on LOGO Manual (1974) [pdf]
I don't think I'm too far off in saying my teachers at the time probably weren't experienced with computers. I didn't have a computer at home until a couple years later (and moved to the US), and didn't really learn about data structures and algorithms until a couple more years. I can only remember doing computer labs (with ~20 shared computers, and some individual attention if you had problems) like chemistry or physics labs, with write ups and some theory. It was enough to pique my interest in computers certainly, so age appropriate lesson accomplished I think, relatively speaking.
ece··on LOGO Manual (1974) [pdf]
Mindustry runs on Android and iPad I see.
ece··on LOGO Manual (1974) [pdf]
I learned LOGO when I was 10 or so, in mid-90s, in India. I had just learned Basic the year before, and it did useful math things, so I was not impressed by LOGO. Off course LOGO does more than what I played around with on the lab computers with (even more than Basic), in a limited amount of time.
ece··on Teddit Is Shutting Down
Gotta leave this here: https://www.techdirt.com/2023/06/21/seven-rules-for-internet...

I think it encapsulates what is happening and what can be done about it pretty well.

ece··on Why they're smearing Lina Khan
I think academia and government have been focused on labor more than this[1], but the wildcard here is consumers who like things just the way they are, and judges still willing to go along.

ece··on Why they're smearing Lina Khan
> PlayStation has been using its market dominance to negotiate exclusive deals with publishers, which has been detrimental to gamers who do not own a PlayStation console.

Then Microsoft or gamers should sue to stop exclusives and show they're being hurt.

ece··on Rocky Linux Expresses Confidence Despite Red Hat's Announcement
That seems like a terrible business idea to me, but hey, open source is more of a development model than a business model.
ece··on Rocky Linux Expresses Confidence Despite Red Hat's Announcement
If the boot disc has GPL code and you modify the code, the GPL applies. You would have to make your modifications available under the GPL when you distribute and allow others the same freedom you just used. It's the whole point of having the GPL.

Red hat wants their fork to be different, I don't see why it should be.

ece··on 3D OpenStreetMap
It thinks the south bay is a desert, my house has a flat roof and windows instead of a garage, and so do all of my neighbors. Not a bad theme, but not very accurate to present day. Still impressive.

If you zoom out enough, it goes back to OSM, so I wonder if it's doing a tile by tile conversion, but I wonder how it could be sped up.

ece··on Apple's game porting toolkit is fantastic. Cyberpunk 2077 at Ultra on an M1 MBP
Hmm, I wonder if this is technical or something else.
ece··on Apple's game porting toolkit is fantastic. Cyberpunk 2077 at Ultra on an M1 MBP
There are options if you just want to play the game, yes, but Apple did the work here, and met developers the wrong half way IMO. If you just want to play with higher settings and fps on the computer you have, less emulation is better, as impressive as it might be. A Vulkan driver would be less emulation and more performance all around I think. Also, $300 can buy a lot of games if games can be made to run well with minimal work.
ece··on Apple's game porting toolkit is fantastic. Cyberpunk 2077 at Ultra on an M1 MBP
Yeah, Apple could build their own nvk-like for Metal driver at this point if they cared about any GPU other than their own. Nvk/mesa itself might enable Linux gaming on Mac pros with 3rd party cards.. one day.

So, you need to spend $3k to get playable framerates, which are possible with a 3060 laptop, maybe even a 3050ti, as they can do 1080p, this just seems to be 900p.

In the new Mac pro..
ece··on Google blew it with open source layoffs
Another take here (from January): https://www.theregister.com/2023/01/27/google_open_source/

Seems to be investor driven, and algorithm driven if the register is right.

ece··on Google leaking 2FA secrets – researchers advise against new account sync feature
With NSLs they can't tell anyone.
ece··on AMD’s 7950X3D: Zen 4 Gets VCache
And this works pretty well, there's flickering on screen, but it is switching graphics. Maybe there's also some mouse stuttering or something as threads are moved to the active chiplet. This basically seems like AMD's version of big.LITTLE, except there's only a cache and frequency difference between cores, not altogether different cores.
ece··on HP laptop can't connect to WiFi with letter 'p' in the password (2018)

ece··on AMD is 'undershipping' chips to keep CPU, GPU prices elevated
Intel also reduced the prices of the A750 GPU today.
ece··on AMD is 'undershipping' chips to keep CPU, GPU prices elevated
Definitely consider buying Intel if you can for GPUs. This type of behavior should be discouraged.
ece··on Easter egg in flight path of last 747 delivery flight
After the 777 gained enough market share, it just seemed like less and less flights (especially the long range ones) were on the 747. End of an era. I flew on the top deck of a 747 once, I was sweating the whole time, but the views were worth it.
ece··on Poll: What's the best laptop for Linux these days?
This is the reason I've moved away from ASUS laptops too, the G14 has soldered RAM. If you want normal arrow keys, SODIMM/M.2 slots, and decent specs other wise the System 76 Oryx and maybe a few others fit the criteria, but the System 76 is going to be the best for Linux.
ece··on Upgrading my old Chumby 8 Linux kernel
Still using mine as a white noise machine and weather/alarm clock.

ece··on FTC restores rigorous enforcement of law banning unfair methods of competition
The Sherman act and newer FTC act have been finding offending conduct just fine, the question is why these laws aren't being followed as written.
ece··on Libsecded
This would be interesting to see in a JIT, even if on a sampling basis. I also wonder if some instruction filtering/detection approach would work for rowhammer.
ece··on Birdwatch, Twitter's collaborative fact checking system
Here are some of the fact checks (login required): https://twitter.com/i/birdwatch/rated_helpful
ece··on Ex-Reddit CEO on Twitter moderation
Having read Yishan's older threads, the point he makes about spam is important, it's to increase people's comfort level with platforms. I think chat is maybe the easiest to feel comfortable on, then forums and social media platforms.

Every one is different and moderation isn't going to be to everyone's liking, but as long as it's encouraging respectful engagement and rejecting the trolls who show no such interest, there is enough social media for everyone who keeps an open mind on all sorts of subjects.

ece··on Centralization is inevitable, but decentralization is right behind it
I can't help but compare to US elections, the higher the bar to vote and less registered voters, the more centralization Republicans can pull off. The only way Democrats can win is if voting and registration are easier and lots of people show up to vote, at least nationally.
