ecolonsmak··on Seven Perfect Shuffles Randomize a Deck of Cards. But How Many Sloppy Ones?
"...unique tracking label for every card in the deck"

I'd like more details on how this was accomplished on a practical level. Got me thinking about how to embed trackers thin enough to go into a playing card that would operate like a mesh network then the deck could self report once it's properly randomized making a green light go off indicating play may begin.

ecolonsmak··on Eurorack Knob Idea
Knobs shouldn't be hard to use - hold down the knob that needs the adjustment and then drag in either of two directions to set the value. Maybe have a pop-up over the knob that displays the value as it's in use.
ecolonsmak··on I tried making artificial sunlight at home
I've been tracking that on and off for years - https://parans.com/

Not sure it's really caught on, but it's out there

ecolonsmak··on Bocoup Is Now Worker-Owned
anyone curious how employee ownership can work for large tech enterprises, a good starting point can be the material made available through the Beyster Institute - https://rady.ucsd.edu/why/centers/beyster/index.html

The founder built an $8 Billion dollar employee owned company, SAIC - and then allowed it to be carved up once he left having failed to ensure the culture of employee ownership was rooted as firmly with the board of directors as it was with the rank and file employees. I worked there for 12 years and saw firsthand the slide away from the ownership model, and it was instructive for me in my early career years.

ecolonsmak··on Best Pens for 2025
Wow! What fun reading this niche interest. The Pilot FriXion sounds fun, for spycraft, or to recreate the Acme disappearing reappearing ink from who framed Roger rabbit.

"If you accidentally make your writing disappear, you may be able to get it to reappear by placing the paper in a freezer that reaches below 14°F (-10°C)."

ecolonsmak··on Minimalistic Beat Maker
This is fun! I'd like to be able to drag the notes around the circle to align the beat as needed, or a snap to grid with resolution options - but does the thing as described, very nice!

ecolonsmak··on Why Are Sex Toy Vibration Patterns So Terrible?
Because it's so intensely personal, it'd be unlikely to have one pattern that would do IT for just anyone. A way to edit the patterns in an app over Bluetooth to get it jusssst right might be the ticket.

The only constant is change.
ecolonsmak··on Are U.S companies legally obligated to maximize profits for shareholders? (2012)
Were you a shareholder at the time?
ecolonsmak··on Globalization is dead and no one is listening
I've been reading Peter Zeihan's book , "the end of the world is just the beginning" the death of free trade being the central theme a near future where the US has abandoned policing the seas and formerly interconnected economies localize in response. Began reading it slightly sceptical of the premise but anecdotes like this above are adding up to a near term 30-50 year that might resemble a global contraction amongst trading relationships.
ecolonsmak··on Why do we call it “boilerplate code?”
In the 19th century, a boilerplate referred to a plate of steel used as a template in the construction of steam boilers. These standardized metal plates reminded editors of the often trite and unoriginal work that ad writers and others sometimes submitted for publication.

ecolonsmak··on America’s bad bet on sports gambling
Gaming should be regulated in such a way that disincentives big business conglomerates from being involved. Upwards of 70% of gaming revenues is depending on the less than 10% of problem gamblers. Should be taxed and managed to ensure the house barely breaks even. Should be organized under the tax code in its own section similar to a 501.c3 -

ecolonsmak··on Welcome to the era of the hyper-surveilled office
you can do that with the snap filters. I use the mac app to overlay all sorts of goofy hats, sunglasses, laser eyes, etc.... onto my face to spice up dull zoom/teams calls.
