elashri··on Supermarket freezers across Europe hit by second suspected cyber-attack
I wonder if any of EU reactors is connected to the open Internet with a weekly password reset policy, where you can use the control rods from the convenient of your home.
elashri··on OpenIDEA: The IDE you know, rebuilt in Rust
> announce a hack

Since when cloning an open source project became a "hack" ?

elashri··on Linode Security Incident
@dang I would encourage you to really think about having security incident as a new HN tag. The wording can be better though.
elashri··on Overgrown, when plants invade your abandoned tabs
They are actually similar in the goal but I use them both for different reasons. Hister does save all of my history for desktop (not available on iOS yet) so I use it as backup to get something I wanted to see but lost. But Karakeep is everywhere and I save things there that I want to keep (it can save the actual page) and can use it on mobile ....etc (and share it too).

This is at least my workflow which can be different. Both are great tools and selfhosted.

elashri··on Overgrown, when plants invade your abandoned tabs
I'm probably in the minority but I can't stand having more than 10 tabs and I start have the urge to finish the task that I'm focused on to just close as many tabs as possible.

So I really read the people talking about 100s of tabs and when I see a colleague having them, I feel that my cognitive ability to deal with that is not there.

I understand that people would like to keep things and that bookmarks sucks, but I would suggest for those to explore Hister [1] and Karakeep [2]. It is much useful that I don't worry about losing stuff now.

elashri··on France asked ISPs to prepare temporary DNS blocks for major social platforms
You can install an app like 1.1.1.1 to use Cloudflare and there are many apps that will do it for generic DNS. Or manually but you will need to create DNS Profile and install it. It is not hard to generate one, but it is usually used for encrypted DNS which you should be using anyway.
elashri··on France asked ISPs to prepare temporary DNS blocks for major social platforms
As someone who lived the first Internet block due to protests with similar demands. This feels refreshing and prove that regimes response to wide spread protests they don’t like is not that different.

But please don’t call it European spring.

elashri··on Anti-patterns in software blogging
I feel that this partly due to the fact the these famous/groundbreaking papers will usually be explained to you in many other places before you even read it. So you probably get good understanding of it even before reading the actual paper.

For example, the papers where Einstein presented special relativity suck really but most of people know about it with goor grasp before reading the actual papers (People of that era).

elashri··on Show HN: Graphene – Data analysis toolkit for your coding agent
> Graphene for most of us here already means Graphene OS.

And for the rest, it is probably the actual Graphene as in the material [1]

elashri··on ArXiv's Updated Rate Limit Policy
It is the usually that LHC experiments (and HEP in general) secretariat office is the one handling the submission to arXiv and journals per policy (avoid people conflicts and managing it centrally because the papers under the name of the collaboration not individuals. Sometimes papers can also be submitted by author directly but not the physics results papers and papers which is signed off by the whole collaborations (computing and ML stuff mainly).

I would think arXiv can work something out for these cases.

elashri··on DeepSeek Elastic Compute (DSec)
I think the number is ~2930 authors according to the CDS [1] which is comparable to the corresponding CMS paper which has about ~2900 authors [2]

elashri··on PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock
This app and previously NewPipe is the main thing I miss after moving to iOS. I really can't stand ads (including organic ads that SponsorBlock deal with).
elashri··on .name Termination
I think it was figure of speech. The domain is registered until 2036

elashri··on All CERN accelerators now on the road to HiLumi
Most of people actually call Hi Lumi era as run 4 (as it said in the article too) then run 5 (Assuming that all experiments lives to run for a fifth run). And that's okay because everyone inside CERN knows that run 4 run is a Hi Lumi run however, maybe it is better to communicate it the way they do here.
elashri··on A third world engineer responds to “RISC-V: They should have known better”
When the term started out, There was nothing called United States (As a country or its current culture/s). And I am not sure if this happens outside the US anyway.
elashri··on Firefox is now the last major browser that still supports uBlock Origin
Automated checks are done for every extension on every update. But their recommend extensions they feature on the Extension store, they do other extensive checks for each update.

elashri··on AFC Stands in Solidarity with UEFA and Concacaf to Protect the FIFA World Cup
What would be a huge news for me is if the CAF which is probably competing with FIFA on the corruptest sports organization come in support.
elashri··on Apertus 1.5, Swiss open-weight, open-source, open training data model
> You need to agree to share your contact information to access this model > This repository is publicly accessible, but you have to accept the conditions to access its files and content.

Is that normal?

elashri··on Back to Kagi

elashri··on Back to Kagi
Author here (I didn't submit the post though)

Actually I did not solve it. I find the alternatives is worse. Google News seems better but my news reading is not a main activity.

Also I live ib Switzerland and don't speak French and I hate when websites like Google always assumes that (being logged solves it but then we have privacy issues too)

Nowadays I just go to the arabic version of Aljazeera and skim the headlines for quick overview on what is happening.

elashri··on GitHub suddenly rejected my SSH key (the fix was a .pub file?)
To be honest, the "mathematically sound" is a widely used jargon used in many academic fields (physics, mathematics from first hand experience). It is also more meaningful than people who would use "nice function" to mean a function that follow some criteria in their head (and you would need to guess what these will be).
elashri··on Kimi K3, and what we can still learn from the pelican benchmark
Arabic native speaker here.

Yes, people will usually post or draw a bicycle right to left which is going to ve opposite of what normally is drawn. I tried the prompt in arabic for many models and I don't recall any adjusting it based on that difference at least culturally speaking.

elashri··on AWS: Inaccurate Estimated Billing Data – $1.7 billion
one USD is about 362 Zimbabwean dollars. So it would still be about ~53 trillion dollars which is more than the nominal GDP of US and China combined.
elashri··on CERN bids farewell to the LHC and enters Long Shutdown 3
CERN stopped hiring non member or associate member states citizens for some time now. Except in very rare circumstances, This applies to US citizens as much as Russians too.

You might disagree on that but we all know that it was political pressure.

elashri··on The best thing that has ever happened for multiplayer games
I have no knowledge in the field. But it would be nice if the article compared the raw prices of usual bare metal offering vs cloud because I am not sure it would support the claim that the egress would be the highest cost.

Of course it could be but a quantitative perspective for an average game would have been much better.

elashri··on Tell HN: OpenAI has started putting ads on paid programs
Are the ads static or appear in a way that would make them recognized easily so that a uBlock Origin rules remove them?
elashri··on We're making Bunny DNS free: because a faster internet won't build itself
I think it is a step in the right direction for bunny to be a competitive for the people on hobby/self hosting. But I think that having a free tier for CDN is what makes cloudflare attractive (Among other things).
elashri··on OpenAI DayBreak – GPT-5.5-Cyber
I think if nothing happens from the government, then this would be a very good example of the benefit of keeping your mouse shut especially if you are lying to get some hype like Anthropic did for months.
