elorant··on Upload Your RAM
Sure they will. The same components go into every office PC. As for GPUs, we could always play older games.
elorant··on Nasdaq Sinks 5% as Investors Retreat from AI Trade After Election
At the very least we could buy hardware again at rational prices.
elorant··on Oracle files to sell $20B in new stock, bonds to finance AI buildout
2.8KWs is just the GPUs. Add another 400 watt for CPUs and RAM and the rest of the hardware, and then leave at least a 30% headroom for PSU loss and spikes. Suddenly you're close to 4KW. And then of course you'd have to remove all that heat from the room.
elorant··on Oracle files to sell $20B in new stock, bonds to finance AI buildout
Oracle's core business is healthy as fuck. It can't default. It could get into a long period of low R&D since all profits would be directed to serve their debt and that could hurt their product line, but they'd definitely can't just vanish into thin air.
elorant··on Private Jet plane crashes in Florida
Judging by what is circulating in Twitter today it mostly flared them up
elorant··on Supermarket freezers across Europe hit by second suspected cyber-attack
Why the fuck does a freezer need access to the Internet in the first place?
elorant··on US tech stocks see sharp falls over AI cost fears
Their 24GB GPU took a year to reach Europe and the 48GB one is nowhere to be found. I mean even if you want to give Intel a second chance in the GPU market they’re so fucking incompetent.
elorant··on Ask HN: Are you tired too in this AI era?
I’m tired of exuberant hardware prices so that companies can shove AI down our throats on subpar products that work way worse than they did before.
elorant··on Banks are now trying to offload the AI data center debt they just underwrote
Just short Oracle and Coreweave.
elorant··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
People aren't freaking out because self-hosting isn't a solve issue and it requires a lot of capital. The average company won't go and build an $1M GPU cluster just to self-host any model. If that gets commoditized then they'll start freaking out.
elorant··on Micron CEO Says Memory Supply Will Be Much Tighter in 2027 and 2028 Than in 2026
They don't have the infrastructure to meet global demand.
elorant··on Dead Money
I’ve been hearing about Chinese GPUs and Chinese RAM going mainstream for two years now. And yet I can’t find either in the European market.
elorant··on Dead Money
It makes perfect sense. Production moved away from consumer RAM to HMB RAM which is the one sitting inside those GPUs that sit in the warehouses. RAM manufacturers don't give a flying fuck if the hardware will be used or not as long as they're paid.

Also GPUs sitting in warehouses doesn't mean that they're there because demand is fabricated. There could be there because the data centers aren't built yet.

elorant··on You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner
I got tired just reading this comment.
elorant··on I said no and Apple said yes
Windows on laptops also just works, especially for high end ones. It’s the Linux on laptops that’s hit or miss.
elorant··on ChatGPT outage – Resolved
Good effing luck to all the vibe coders out there
elorant··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
Some npm library that makes headers bold would be broken.
elorant··on Tim Cook Sold Out Steve Jobs (2025)
If they could, they would ship an apple version of the internet only available to apple devices.

Well Microsoft tried to do the exact same thing with that dreadful Microsoft Network in the early days of the web. So it's not inherit to Apple only, all large corporations would like their users locked up in their ecosystems.

elorant··on GLM-5.3 is now open-weight
Privacy isn’t only, I don’t want anyone to have access to my data. It could also be, I don’t want anyone to know my use case because it’s niche and highly profitable.
elorant··on Anthropic tells staff to work from home due to possible security team strike
Same in Greek. It's "ekatommyrio" with a prefix of the order of magnitude "dis" from two for billions, "tris" from three for trillions, "tetrakis" from four for quadrillions and so on.
elorant··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
Meanwhile, canned sardines went 20% up in the last month in Greece. And that's while we have plenty of local production. I can't imagine what it would be in countries where they import everything. Give it a few years and all fish food prices could go up substantially.
elorant··on Fable and the end of the free lunch
So why isn't this the default mode then?
elorant··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
The distinction is that on the latter case you have a cartel that decided to fix prices and fuck everyone in the ass.

elorant··on I built a 500k-domain search engine for makers in a weekend for $10
Domains are way more than just 40M though.
elorant··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
I can find them just fine in Greece. Imported from Portugal or Morocco, plus some local brands.
elorant··on Why Wall Street is ignoring big tech's debt [video]
That’s not the argument though. The argument is that conversion rates as per OpenAI are about 5% and to serve the other 95% you need to build significant infrastructure that costs hundreds of billions annually. So for every white collar worker that you know and uses it and pays for it there are 20 free loaders. And mind you, 5% conversion rate is extremely high already as a number per se. It won't magically reach 20% in a couple of years. Chances are it will fall particularly for the enterprise segment due to the advent of the Chinese models.
elorant··on A year of fighting scrapers on my 1.5 million-page website
No, I won't send a ton, I'll send a few dozens to a few hundreds at most because not everyone is interested in the same things. And they'll visit at their own timeline. If your site can't service a few dozen requests simultaneously then you probably aren't a news site in the first place so the whole argument is moot.
elorant··on A year of fighting scrapers on my 1.5 million-page website
The vast majority of news sites don't have an RSS. They don't even have a robots.txt.
