On the Internet since the coffee pot cam was live. Got out of IT and became an electrician. No regrets. Uses Gentoo unironically. U+1F1E9 U+1F1F0

encom··on Police are using AI to pull over drivers for 'suspicious' behavior
Pardon me. The future is cognitively diverse.
encom··on Police are using AI to pull over drivers for 'suspicious' behavior
Yup. If I enable "privacy mode" in my Nissan Leaf I can't turn on the heater remotely.

I requested a copy of the data they harvest. They log EVERYTHING. GPS of course, but also when I turn on the wipers, turn signal... basically the total state of the car at all times.

And all I want is remote heating. Checking the battery is nice for monitoring charge progress, but I could do without it.

So what I do now is drive in privacy mode, and when I park I have to remember to disable privacy mode if I think I might need heating tomorrow morning.

The future is fucking retarded.

It is an Apple machine, yes.

Zero. Ignoring that Apple prices are already inflated beyond all reason, a larger battery would add a single digit dollar amount to the BOM.
encom··on New iPad mini
>resilient to drops

I would be content if they'd stop making phones slippier than a wet bar of soap. My Pixel 8a is ridiculous, I don't know how they do it. If you have dry hands, it's nearly impossible to hold on to.

encom··on New iPad mini
Nobody cares if a tablet has a shit camera.
encom··on Air Purifiers as White Noise Machines
No I specifically said (quoted) "and infectious particles" and compared it to an 18th century city, which predates indoor plumbing.

I guess that's too subtle for HN. In the future I will be sure to emphasise when my ANDs are boolean.

encom··on Danish Government silently drops plan to dump MS Office
I work in the public sector in Denmark. Office 365 is the bane of my work day. I only have access to the web versions of the apps, but they feel like toys. It seems impossible to do anything even moderately complex with them. Especially form design. I've installed Linux+LibreOffice on a spare machine at work that I use occasionally, to keep from tearing my hair out.

As much as I despise Microsoft, I admit that their Office suite is pretty good. Or at least it used to be - the last version I used was 2010 I think. I can't belive that 365 has regressed so much. Seems like shoehorning an Office suite into a webbrowser wasn't a great idea.

encom··on Air Purifiers as White Noise Machines
Me neither, and that's why I asked, but it apparently offended the HN commentariat.
encom··on Air Purifiers as White Noise Machines
Infectious particles? In most of USA and Canada? I don't believe you.
encom··on Air Purifiers as White Noise Machines
I've considered an air purifier for allergy reasons, but...

>removes smoke and infectious particles

Where do people live that they need to remove such things, 18th century London?

encom··on The No Kings Takedown Is Why You Shouldn't Rent Your Megaphone from Zuck
No public votes, and mods that aren't insane is what keeps HN quality reasonable.

I was active on Reddit up to 2018 or so, and at that point it was already sliding full speed towards the cesspit it is today. Public votes destroy dissenting views, and moderators treat the site as their personal fiefdom. There aren't a lot of danish communities left on the internet, but r/denmark was getting unbearable because of constant tone policing, finger wagging and micro management by the mods. That, and constant low effort meme spam. And that subreddit was far from being the worst case.

I miss the dk.* Usenet days.

Can't have that on Reddit. Honestly, getting your account deleted is them doing you a favour.

encom··on Europe EV sales rose 70.3% in September, 32.6% of market share
>the light hits it and the electrons jump the gap

Yes, but the circuit is way more complex than that. You're dependant on the OEM for spare parts, support, software and whatever else, not to mention the problems inherent in putting this junk on the internet (which it will be). I am not fond of the idea of giving the CCP access to our infrastructure.

It's funny, I have heated steering wheel in my car (2022 Leaf), and when I bought it I didn't think anything of it. However, being in Scandinavia, when the first snow+ice came, I tried it and loved it instantly. Now I even use it on not very cold days, just because it feels nice. :)

encom··on Passkeys are not a trap
But the sites where I actually care if my account gets compromised - Steam, FastMail, DigitalOcean etc. - are very unlikely to screw up password storage.

I'm never going to bother with paranoid security inconveniences for the crappy website my local pizza place uses.

encom··on Thunderbird for iOS
Many such cases. Duckduckgo is practically unusable because it just decides for itself which of my search terms it actually searches for. I have to explicitly quote every word to get it to function like a search engine.

Meanwhile, Netflix search (on Apple TV at least), is not only practically unusable, but literally so. Doesn't matter what you input, it just returns a random selection of films. I saw Kill Bill the other day, and wondered if there were any other Tarantino films on there. "Tarantino" returned things like Indiana Jones and other completely nonsensical results.

Am I the only one around here who knows SQL?

encom··on New Apple TV 4K
Well I, for one, have wanted more AI and microphones in my Netflix device for years, and I'm glad Apple is courageous enough to deliver.

encom··on Hackers activate automatic defrosting in supermarket fridges across Europe
I promise I'm not simping for Danfoss, just because I'm danish, but... Is it really their fault the customers aren't putting these things behind VPN? Yes, the thing should be secure ideally, but why take the risk?
encom··on Hackers activate automatic defrosting in supermarket fridges across Europe
Please find me a new car that isn't Internet-connected, genius. You're assuming consumers have a meaningful alternative.

encom··on Bitwarden Dual License Model
This is the fate of every online review site. Every single one. Including IMDB as I realised yesterday while trying to find something to watch.

The most egregious example I've found was that the Danish postal service had something like a 4,8/5,0 rating on Trustpilot. You'll be hard pressed to find a more inept, corrupt and universally hated company. So in an attempt to improve their public image, they decided to game the ratings, instead of actually delivering mail properly.
