erpaa··on Bitcoin's terrible 2018 doesn't bode well for the future of crypto
Bitcoins value comes from the real assets that are traded. These assets are foremostly illegal drugs, guns, porn and -- financial security under oppressive government. The last one is now much less valuable however, when Chinese government has started clamping down free internet, and bitcoin transactions will be monitored more closely. However now that we have bitcoin derivatives those who are afraid that bitcoin does not represent their moving asset valuation correctly can effect real changes. Therefore it is prudent to assume that bitcoin will settle down to reasonable level. I think the psychologically "reasonable" value is when one bitcoin is comprehensible to average drug dealer in 3rd world countries. I say 1000 dollars is such a number.
erpaa··on Two drones cause at least two dozens of diverted flights at Gatwick airport
Thanks to Brexit, Britain can now restore its draconian rules about kites and toy aircraft. Which was 50 metres. The EU-ruling is 150(300) metres.
erpaa··on Germany passes immigration law to lure non-EU skilled workers
Let not use this horrible fake news rag as a source. Here is a snippet from Die Welt:

"Like academics today, they can then get a residence permit for six months to look for an employer. This applies to all trainees - not just those from shortage occupations. Condition is a small knowledge of German and securing their livelihood."

Which basically opens the gates for anybody. The "skill" can be just anything like peeling potatoes.

erpaa··on Why is “ß” not used in Swiss German?
Some may not know where the common curseword "Shaibe" is coming from. It is "Scheiße" pronounced phonetically.
erpaa··on Larry Niven: Bordered in Black
Why is Jason Momoa and other maori so big and strong?

Is it possible to buy bitcoins anonymously and store them directly into Sam Harris' wallet? This would solve all creepy political de-platforming issues forever.
erpaa··on 9 things that give you hope about climate change
Helsinki Solar Power plant in full speed replacing coal: https://www.helen.fi/en/sun/homes/solar-power-plants/suvilah...

Yes it is covered with snow. And yes the production was 0.53kWh today. On best December days it produces 10kWh, Which is 0.0003% of its theoretical power.

erpaa··on Why modern men are losing their testosterone
Nice try soyboy.
erpaa··on Vladimir Putin's Stasi ID Card Found in German Archives
In 1991 the Germans distributed the Stasi Archives to appropriate countries. In Scandinavian countries the information was immediately either destroyed or hidden in the archives of the secret police. The rumor is that almost every member of the ruling leftist or social-democrat parties were connected with Stasi.
erpaa··on Question: How Hacker News Fights Fake News?
That is easy. Try linking gab.com, bitchute.com, sputniknews.com, usareally.com, dangerous.com, rt.com, vk.com, etc, etc, etc.

You will get some rude words and maybe IP-ban too.

erpaa··on Greenland’s melting snow makes new a hockey stick
This is definitively super fake information. Viking were cultivating barley there in 10th century. And the climate was to cold for that only after 400 years. Then there was 500 years of ice age in Grønland. We can state that the optimal conditions are soon restored thanks to Trump and global warming.
erpaa··on US and Russia ally with Saudi Arabia to water down climate pledge
"Law of Thermodynamics"? Which law?

Maybe it is number 4: "The entropy of a system approaches a constant value as the temperature approaches absolute zero".

-- I think we need more global warmings.

erpaa··on [dead]
It is actually quite frightening situation. This issue is a fact and well-documented in Finnish-speaking media. But all English-speaking (or Swedish-speaking) news are on "alt-media", which are all by default banned in Hackers News, including the Sputnik News.
erpaa··on ‘We are in trouble.’ Global carbon emissions reached a record high in 2018
Do not worry. Putin has made new pipelines and can now sell more gas. That methane would eventually leak to atmosphere anyways. So it is a good deed.

BTW. Small countries, like Finland, cannot sell cheese to Russia, because of embargo. While big countries, like Germany and USA, can freely cooperate with Russia in much bigger issues, like energy and space industry. Verrry strange.

erpaa··on Indo-European languages
One country sticks out in this uniform sea of indo-europeans. Ugly detail is that in Finland has ruling class of swedes (%3), who have very special privileges, because of their "unique language and culture".
erpaa··on Link between health spending and life expectancy: US is an outlier
Looks to me that in USA there is no incentive for healthy lifestyle at all: if you can pay (for the insurance), the healthcare provider does anything regardless your condition or costs. In government-funded health care the idea is to maximize results in the whole population. For example the surgery of fat person is so risky and expensive that it is not worth it, you can save 10 normal persons while the fatty tries to lose some weight. People know that and that is why you rarely see those Texas-style lumbering mounds of flesh in Stockholm.
erpaa··on Why Finland is good at handling forest fires. It’s not because of raking
Eh What utter shit is this? There are no "Controlled Burnings" in Finland anymore. Just meticulous collecting (aka raking) and mulching loose material from clear cutting. The material is used in energy production.

The problem elsewhere (eg Sweden and California) is the "Green Forestry" principles, which prevent removing excess biomass from forests, and at the sametime a policy to actively suppress forest fires is enforced. This leads to an overly accumulation of biomass in trees and forest floors, which in turn makes forests vulnerable to raging and fast moving forest fires, when critical amount of biomass has been accumulated.

As I recall "Controlled Burnings" were quite popular in 1950s in Finland expecially around railroads, because steam locomotives were such a fire hazard.

erpaa··on Colonial violence came home in the First World War
"This is also why whiteness, first turned into a religion during the economic and social uncertainty that preceded the violence of 1914, is the world’s most dangerous cult today."

erpaa··on Where Trolls Reigned Free: A New History of Reddit
I was very happy with Reddit around 2008. "The pre-1995 Usenet is back, you can say anything you want and then enjoy the verbal lashings you deserve".

Around 2015 everything changed: you were either transphobic nazi or morbidly obese surgically modified foul-mouthed thingy, who had zher own pronoun. There was no room for normal people anymore.

erpaa··on Twitter deletes over 10,000 accounts that sought to discourage U.S. voting
"Grab them by the ballots" facebook page with naked fat woman is not a jest. Would discourage me surely.
erpaa··on Mass starvation is humanity’s fate if we keep flogging the land to death
Yes. But this was accomplished with heavy machinery and fertilization, which are based on imported oil. In Northern Norway you can find most pitiful attempts of agriculture above the arctic circle, indicating that the land was overpopulated and even the sea was overfished.
erpaa··on Mass starvation is humanity’s fate if we keep flogging the land to death
Ok. "Oppressed people of Ukraine invited vikings (ie russians) to rule them." I do not know much history, but this snippet from Putin's speech from 2014 comes to mind.
erpaa··on Mass starvation is humanity’s fate if we keep flogging the land to death
This fact comes from history. There were mass famines at that population level around 1000 AD. The reason why vikings started to travel to other countries murdering and pillaging.
erpaa··on Mass starvation is humanity’s fate if we keep flogging the land to death
"I am plagued by visions of starving people seeking to escape from grey wastes, being beaten back by armed police."

Excellent. But where are they escaping to?

All countries north of 40th parallel are living far beyond their sustenance level. For example Sweden can maintain population of one million and then the food must as simple as possible, mostly potatoes.

erpaa··on Twitter bots drive up to 60% of the conversations on trending topics
Searched "Gavin MacInnes" on Twitter. "Gavin inserts Dildo in his ass"-video was posted over and over again, nothing else.

Searched "Sargon of Akkad" on Twitter. "Truth about SofA"-video posted over and over again and nothing else.

Obviously Factcheck.me and Botcheck.me have removed those controversial gentlemen and mass-produced this quality content instead. Automates working for good cause are not bots, of course.

erpaa··on Trump to terminate birthright citizenship
Very few countries have such right. In tightly-packed area of tiny countries of Europe such a birthright would have been a total mess. USA is also different, as it does not even know who and how many citizens it has, so it frequently counts them up in "census", whatever it means and how the hell it is even executed.
erpaa··on It’s better to be born rich than gifted
Unfortunately same applies in Nordic countries too, where all education is free and all students get 500€ monthly no-questions-asked free money and housing.
erpaa··on US Simplified Spelling Board (1906)
These projects suck, because they try to renovate existing system, which is a total failure in o so many ways. Best approach is just to adopt the standard German/Swedish/Italian phonetic spelling just in one shock move. "Dis is ön eksample öf renoveited Inglish spelling foor joor vjuving plesöre".
erpaa··on How Russia Helped Swing the Election for Trump
Yes but why? Russia is a third world country, with resources and population of Brazil. Why would Brazil care about who is president in some distant country?
