eschutte2··on Ask HN: Independent-Contracting Resources/Advice?
When I was getting started I think I adapted one from Nolo, and that was fine for my needs. You could ask them (the client) to supply one and adjust it as you like.
eschutte2··on Ask HN: Independent-Contracting Resources/Advice?
I second the recommendation above. You shouldn't be paying UI or workers comp AFAIK, but yes to B&O tax and probably licensing fees both to Washington and Seattle. I'd recommend having a good contract in place.

As mentioned there: be sure you understand everything in whatever contract you sign, and consult with a lawyer if you're unsure of anything.

eschutte2··on Fitful nightly sleep linked to chronic inflammation, hardened arteries
From that article:

> "A first limitation is that our analyses were constrained by the use of cross-sectional data, which precludes definitive assessment of directionality of associations. For example, it could be that cardiovascular disease (or associated treatments) may also drive sleep fragmentation in addition to, or rather than, the other way around."

eschutte2··on Fitful nightly sleep linked to chronic inflammation, hardened arteries
I also noticed that. They do say

> “Indeed, these associational results in humans mirror recent data in which experimentally manipulated sleep disruption in mice led to higher levels of circulating inflammation that caused atherosclerotic lesions in the rodents,” added Vallat.

...which sounds like the real research.

eschutte2··on Show HN: Who wants to be hired (anonymously)
Neat idea. I didn't know it was taboo to be open to new offers, I assumed everyone was open to new offers. Feedback: what's the $ figure? If I were listed here I doubt I'd want to have a dollar amount by my name. As an employer, I might want to click one of the tags to see all people with that tag.
eschutte2··on Ask HN: New software engineer, startup failing to pay salary. What do I do? (UK)
I would definitely stop working immediately and start lining up other work. If you can't get them to pay out what they already owe you, get in touch with whatever government agency in the UK handles employee pay issues.
eschutte2··on Ask HN: Do you miss Steve Jobs in 2020?
Yes. What would he do? No idea. That's why I miss him.

eschutte2··on Work-from-home boom leads to more surveillance
Edit since I just re-read the parent comment and might have misunderstood: I don't distinguish between tech and other fields in this regard. I think it's an issue in all fields.
eschutte2··on Work-from-home boom leads to more surveillance
That's been my observation too. In tech, this kind of paranoid micro-management is a great (inverse) indicator for whether someone's used to working with talented people. If I were ever managing again in tech I'd be trying to find people much smarter than me and then get the heck out of their way.
eschutte2··on Recovered virus patients retest positive due to 'dead' virus fragments: experts
In at least two ways I can think of. First, these fragments have been inactivated, probably by the immune system, suggesting you have some immunity (obviously, that's not the same as being perfectly immune). Second, given how infectious the virus is, the fact they're not finding genuine positive re-tests strongly suggests some immunity is happening.
eschutte2··on St. Hildegard's Litteræ Ignotæ (2016)
Can you provide a source for that? I'm having trouble finding any support for the use of "matron" in the way you describe.

I think they mean negative as in "not positive" (for virus).
eschutte2··on Ask HN: What's your latest failed side project and why?
Hey, cool idea and implementation. I think even a single screenshot (of a diffed part in the sample PDF) front and center on the homepage would go a long way, if you ever update it.
eschutte2··on Paris Mayor: It's Time for a '15-Minute City'
I'm sorry, I should have noticed you were talking about not owning it. I agree with the point that low interest rates mean higher prices, of course.
eschutte2··on Paris Mayor: It's Time for a '15-Minute City'
I don't know what to tell you, except that the monthly payment on a 1.2mm loan at 1% for 30 years (insert your loan terms here) is 3.86k, not 1k.

Edit: put another way, if you pay 1k/mo on a 1.2mm loan, you'll finish making payments in 530 years. The Jeanne Calment loan!

eschutte2··on Paris Mayor: It's Time for a '15-Minute City'
Check that math
eschutte2··on Ask HN: My clients always lose interest towards end of projects
Don't ask for feedback. Just send the invoice. Try to avoid being done very early. Maybe they'd have less trouble staying interested if they paid in advance.

I'm also not an expert, but to me the critical distinction is that prions are contagious, that is they cause other proteins to misfold. You can have misfolded proteins that don't cause cascading problems.
