etatester··on Cisco gives engineer unlimited AI tokens to rewrite legacy code
True but also there has never been a better time for total rewrites of legacy code. One could even hope it's the time COBOL finally goes out of fashion in some industries.
etatester··on New iPad mini
The point of foldables is that they fit a big screen in your pocket. What's the point of a foldable display? Fit a 10 inch in your tiny purse? Very hard sale for double the price.

We will eventually see "foldable MacBook" because I genuinely want a 20" screen in my backpack or even just a smaller 16" MacBook. I guess not coming before 2035

etatester··on New iPad mini
I'm ok with the bump, but make it not wiggle on a damn table. Google figured this out. The first MacBook Airs figured this out (wedge).

They came up with the plateau, just make the whole plateau flat already.

etatester··on New iPad mini
"We just changed a couple things, no biggie, don't buy it" is the reality, but that doesn't sell. Marketers optimize for sales saying what they can get away with.
etatester··on What’s getting pwned right now
Until Google and Apple agree to create a new "web app" standard, it's not gonna happen HTML moves painfully slow. Then solutions come out (input datetime) and people don't use them.
etatester··on What’s getting pwned right now
I'm ok with that. Better than those 2007 iPhone bare pages where you can't do or read anything.

What I don't like is that every site now looks the same.

etatester··on Revolut down as users report app not working
Article mentions app down, which presumably it's not the same part used by MasterCard
etatester··on My old job feels distant now
That's why you're about to get fired. That's the whole issue.
etatester··on Amazon pushes up prices across the Internet
It's already illegal in EU and UK
etatester··on Secret of Orange Cats Revealed After 60-Year Search
Dissected cats indeed make for terrible jeans. Very kitsch.
etatester··on Fingerprints are the new cookies
If it didn't, why do you think every captcha solution uses it? It doesn't have to be 100% effective to be useful.
etatester··on 3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit
This. Google like ChatGPT have started censoring content like people did not populate this earth by fornication. Yandex cares much less about this sort of censorship, at least from what I can tell. Even Bing fell from its throne. IYKYK.
etatester··on Show HN: Carrier-Explode: iPhone, Pixel and Galaxy carrier settings decoded
Cloudflare will pass the country in the request headers. Then your server can pass it to the browser if you need it there.

etatester··on Show HN: Carrier-Explode: iPhone, Pixel and Galaxy carrier settings decoded
This is super cool. Particularly for the fact that it just showed my country's operators rather than the usual America First.
etatester··on Cloudflare acquires Deno
Is Node a fork of Chrome? They didn't replace V8 either.
etatester··on Cloudflare acquires Deno
To me Deno died the day it decided to not support npm packages and died again when it started supporting it.

Ironically the reason why I hated it when it was introduced was the reason why they added support for npm (i.e. absolute URLs don't support semver and therefore you will load multiple versions)

etatester··on Cloudflare acquires Deno
Deno is decidedly not a fork for Node.
etatester··on Show HN: gtlds.fyi – All the proposed new gTLDs
The cat is out of the bag. TLDs are now the domains of the rich. Why not have .taylorswift? It's just 250k https://gtlds.fyi/names/taylorswift

As for the rest, meh, these could be "I have an idea for a domain" but the domain costs 250k

etatester··on GitHub Incident with Git Operations, Pull Requests and Actions
Easy. GitHub is hosted on Sourceforge.
etatester··on Shipping JPEG XL in Chrome
You made me check. iOS only supports JXL in ProRAW mode, which (I hope) most people don't use.
etatester··on Shipping JPEG XL in Chrome
I have a feeling that progressive loaders got downgraded along the way for whatever reason. I remember seeing progressive JPEGs and PNGs also load... progressively. JPEG even often had a grayscale-like first layer.
etatester··on Shipping JPEG XL in Chrome
Codecs have been a thing on both major OSes, Windows Media Player could open DivX and QuickTime could open MKV. I think they were only limited to videos however.
etatester··on Meta’s Muse is an adorable privacy and security dumpster fire
Reading the linked articles suggests that this is not possible, but Apple did acknowledge that the full-disk access grants you access to other apps (until the most recent update)

Typical "leopards ate my face" moment. You give AI (from Meta, nonetheless) full-disk access and then complain that—wow—it really meant FULL.

In a perfect world where you got nothing to hide, where companies don't sell your data and there are no hackers, even I would love to just hand all my data to Muse and have it be my trusted assistant. People who think we live in such a world are already doing that, evidently.

etatester··on Resurrecting iChat audio and video conferencing
The call actually does appear in the Recents list in red, with the time of call, it just doesn't say "missed" explicitly. This matches how the Phone app has looked for the past 20 years.

The "missed calls" list I mentioned would be more of a filter, which is indeed annoying but not fundamental.

etatester··on JetBrains reports revenue growth, net financial loss for 2025
I think you're paid to deliver. Lots of developers for decades have delivered crap that looks good on the surface and is otherwise unmaintainable. Now we're reaching the point where "everyone can code" and review queues are getting too long, with the result of many PRs being yoloed.

This of course varies by company but this is clearly where it's headed: bot pushes, bot reviews, you look at the PR title and click merge.

etatester··on Example.com just launched the biggest redesign in decades
It's quite sad to see incompetence at these levels. This is a static page that loads JS. They even inject styles via JS...
etatester··on Resurrecting iChat Audio and Video Conferencing
I don't see what's confusing about the app, both on macOS an iOS. You get a preview of your face, the last contacts you called and a green "New call" button.

To me this is simple to the point of being excessively simple, especially with the "missed calls" being in a 16x16 click target dropdown.

It looks like they optimized for "calls from grandma" mode.

etatester··on Sales of sub-€25,000 electric car models set to rise sevenfold
Outside France people don't live in big clusters. Take a look at the night satellite view. All those small/continuous towns do not have (functional) public transport. In my 12k-people town we don't have buses other than school buses and long-distance ones. And unfortunately people don't really walk other than for leisure.

As far as I know the closest city with public transport counts 100k residents, but there are 60 smaller towns in my province alone.

etatester··on Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and get its disk space back
Sorry where's the rubble? The OS is pretty thin feature-wise. It's not like certain other OS that literally ship with ads and third-party games.
etatester··on Updates to Full Disk Access in macOS
Call me a paranoid but I'm afraid of the harness itself, not the apps it generates. You can see lots of people being concerned with Deepseek Harness being Chinese, but I share the same sentiment towards all AI-based software that can run unsandboxed on my computer.
