eyuelt··on Practice typing by retyping entire novels
You may be interested in typing.io, which is specifically for code. I don't think it'll help much with numbers though. Personally, I've never gotten the hang of touch typing the number row, so I use the numpad instead.
eyuelt··on Somali Law (2013)
For the record, Ethiopia's 2006 invasion of Somalia was US-backed. The US even participated in the conflict with airstrikes.
eyuelt··on Defending a website with Zip bombs
The article says that 42.zip compresses 4.5 petabytes down to 42 bytes. It should say 42 kilobytes.

I don't see a way to comment on the article itself, but hopefully the author reads this.

eyuelt··on Why American Workers Now Dress So Casually
I think it does. I'm guessing most of the people who take the single outfit approach do so based on what they've heard about decision fatigue. Not because they want to save the 30 seconds they spend picking out a shirt every morning, but because that decision supposedly impacts their decision making for the rest of the day.

AWS and Heroku aren't really competitors. Firstly, since AWS is IaaS, whereas Heroku is PaaS, they target different users. More importantly, Heroku is built on top of AWS, so Amazon gets paid for all the resources used by Heroku apps.
eyuelt··on Google Will Soon Shame All Websites That Are Unencrypted
Ah. True, my mistake.
eyuelt··on Google Will Soon Shame All Websites That Are Unencrypted
Sure they can. Your ISP can easily MitM you.
eyuelt··on What Makes Tom Hanks Look Like Tom Hanks: Modeling a person from photos
I think Obama just never makes that face so it looked really weird.
eyuelt··on Let's Encrypt is Trusted
Yep, if you get a certificate signed by one of their intermediate certificates, you're good to go.
eyuelt··on Scenes from Google Street View
It's true that violence against women is very common and that is one possible explanation for this image. But isn't it possible that these people are just drunk and stumbling over each other? Maybe if someone found this image's location on street view we'd be able to see the couple of frames before and after this one and get better context.
eyuelt··on Tabnabbing: A New Type of Phishing Attack (2010)
As a user though, I find it extremely annoying when I'm trying to find out how old an article is and can't find a date anywhere on the page.
eyuelt··on Ask HN: Is Objective-C Now Dead?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't know many people that complain about the syntax of JS. Usually the complaints are about the many poor design decisions (due, no doubt, to the fact that the language was designed in only 10 days). So I don't think there's anything wrong having a syntax that looks similar to JS.

Also, though I haven't actually looked very much into Swift yet, from what I've seen, I disagree that Swift is just a syntactical mask on top of Obj-C. It looks to me to be following a similar approach to Rust and Go, in that it combines features of many different languages, object oriented and functional alike.

eyuelt··on Fishing for Hackers: Analysis of a Linux Server Attack
I'm new to this area but am really interested. What do people usually use other than sysdig to try to see if/how their machine has been compromised?
eyuelt··on What every founder fears
Why wouldn't you? I think it's natural to want to defend yourself when you're being attacked. No one wants their name dragged through the mud. It's hard to stay silent, especially considering that many people will see your silence as a sign of guilt.
eyuelt··on After 180 Websites, I’m Ready to Start the Rest of My Life as a Coder
There are 13 types of people in the world. Your assignment is to figure out what they are and turn in a 10-12 page essay describing them by Monday. Class dismissed.

eyuelt··on Google Maps One-Hand Zoom on iPhone
Not any more uncomfortable than single tapping any other part of the screen one-handed. Of course this depends on screen size...

You're right, this would probably be perfectly fine on the iPhone, though it could be annoying on something like a Galaxy S3, especially for someone with small hands.

If it's inside that centimeter, zooming into the middle is useless anyway.

True, but if it always zooms to the middle, the user knows that they need to center the point that they want to zoom into before they actually zoom.

eyuelt··on Google Maps One-Hand Zoom on iPhone
I think it makes sense to zoom to the middle.

Since you're using this with one hand, tapping anywhere other than the area where your thumb naturally rests would be uncomfortable.

Also, and more importantly I think, what if you wanted to zoom in to a position near the top of the screen? You would have to tap near the top of the screen and move your finger up, causing your thumb to go off the screen. So you wouldn't be able to zoom in to an area near the top of the screen or zoom out from an area near the bottom. If such a large segment of the screen is unusable for this feature, you might as well just have it zoom to the middle, and make the user center the place they want to zoom to on their own.

eyuelt··on Stuxnet Likely Constituted Illegal Act of Force, Study Says
I was wondering the same thing. It seems to have been a joint project between the governments of the US and Israel. But to my knowledge, neither party has admitted to it, so it would be pretty hard to prove.
eyuelt··on Maxis Insider: SimCity Servers Not Necessary
True, Maxis probably isn't doing much computation. rz2k is simply pointing out that Fargren's argument is incorrect. Same as what stcredzero said, "Your conclusion is probably right, but your theoretical basis for it leaves a lot to be desired."
