falserum··on Anthropic IPO buyers see valuation as low as $1.1T
Depends on the price.

Do we know if current pricing is sustainable?

People slowly are getting used to it. (Less so with journalctl)

Previous gov now is opposition. So if students fail, next election might bring back the old team.

(1) Nothing changes over night. (Unless you want explosions; I surely dont)

(2) The most important thing is that power was handed over peacefully. New guy, new team, new ideas and approaches.

falserum··on Serbia's Vucic concedes election defeat in historic win for student movement
Nato bombed Serbia in 1999. Russia is anti nato. Result unsurprising.

Hopefully, wounds are healing, and more productive friends can be found.

If you question was honest, most likely - a dislike for semantic bleaching.

Also, some (not me), have survived regimes like Tito, Assad or Saddam, they definitely would have different perspective on word oppression.

(A thing to get us on the same ground, lets call him extremely corrupt, very few will dispute that)

falserum··on Job loss and cortisone mania
How come?

One way to look at glorious olden days is that man with one job could feed his whole family.

Other way to look at same times is that panama canal construction cost tens of thousands of lives and US had did not end systemic racism until 80’s.

I posit that no small part of prosperity of middle class was result of having less fortunate helping out due to lesser bargaining power (somewhere else in the country or the world)

It is good that people die less during construction. And it is ok to cost more.

falserum··on Job loss and cortisone mania
> apex of economic exploitation

A bit self centered take.

Centuries(Millenia) of slaves would probably dispute that.

falserum··on Job loss and cortisone mania
> were routinely killed

Does that happen now? How often? Are you or your friends at risk?

> why is it laughable to say that there is a need to resist the injustice

It is not, it is normal and necessary.

Thing that is laughable is push for violence expecting a good outcome.

falserum··on Job loss and cortisone mania
How safe would you feel knowing that yesterday your neighbour killed 3 rich guys (and probably redistributed their stuff)?

Starting tradition of violence is easier than stoping it.

falserum··on The No Kings Takedown Is Why You Shouldn't Rent Your Megaphone from Zuck
Businesses operate in a world as it is now, not as we wish it to be. Facebook has a lot of people there, and also lot of businesses have it as their only webpage. If we want to change the world we start with this version that we currently have. You will have hard time convincing bar owner start renting server or paying web dev if current facebook-page is good enough already now. (Disclaimer: I do not use facebook and I’m quite frustrated when the only webpage for the business is on facebook :( )

In unrelated topic, each person decides how much to spend spend/borrow/save as it is private decision to make, but to control inflation government manipulates bond interest rates which force public to change their behaviour.

To each their own, but I would not like to be in France during those riots. (Also, does the outburst of violence actually result in more changes being done? If no, then what’s the point; if yes, then the most violent organiser policy wins; does not seem like a winning strategy)

I do know that there are stiff penalties in Russia. (Ranging from official court stuff, to beatings and rape using bottles)

And yes I know that this is far from statistically sound way of gathering data.

But it is quite illustrative.

You can see in interviews some people say: I do not want to comment on this (I guess 90% due to being afraid of those penalties due to disagreement)

Some speak very (incomprehensibly) bravely and strongly against the war.

Others choose words like: we should just use nuclear weapons.

Btw different episodes come from different places, somewhat showing different demographics.

falserum··on Containment and monitoring failures are to blame for AI hacking reports: experts
Llm is generalist.

Plan for solving msth problem:

- read papers X, Y, Z

….

Trying to download paper X curl -si https://server1.com/paperX

401

… try alternative ways

(Hacking is ethical thing, technically to LLM it is just opening a window to reach the goal)

There is no such thing as bad publicity. (Technically not true, but definitely applicable in this concrete case, as planned P/E ratios are crazy)

I neither judge nor trying to convince you. I’m just sharing my thoughts mostly for other lurkers here.

Plenty of people in Russia see Russia as the great power, and that it has the right to take its rightful place. Here is one data source available, Danil Orain, youtuber interviews people on Russian streets: https://youtube.com/@1420channel?si=RX7q3nW182ckQVWo (Tldv; its not that far from 50/50 anti-war vs imperilist views).

> > <Russians say that> west is conniving and bad (and don’t forget - rotten)

> And where is factual inaccuracy here?

I’m not sure if you have done it on purpose, but you made me smile :)

falserum··on 3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit
That indicates that actions were taken to usurp absolute power, not that there is 0% support.

People there, from young age live with constant repetition of same soviet style messaging: “west is conniving and bad (and don’t forget - rotten); we won WW2; USSR was best in the world at X, Y, Z; Kiev Rus Vikings; inheritors of eastern Rome something…”.

Those messages are indistinguishable part of national (almost personal) pride, even for a lot of russian speaking people that currently live outside of Russia.

(If I would be raised in muslim family, I would be muslim; if I would be raised in russian info space, most likely I would support 3day operation to save Russian people from fashists)

A bit more fuel for the bikesheding aspect of this:

Maybe not freedom, but Switzerland did some shooting (at allies and axis) and took casualties. To preserve its neutrality.
falserum··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
I am not a parent, you got me.

But I do have quite close relationships to several families and their children.

Some parents actively teach kids to read before going to school (despite certain developmental challenges the kid has), while others see it as a job of teachers to teach meaning of left/right or how to tie a shoe (not joking).

Btw. Most (All?) management techniques could be compared to dog training (positive and negative reinforcements), it does not make it bad or immoral.

> But when you say that "parents are not powerless" your implication overstates that power. There's no way to force a child to be curious or to care about a subject.

By “not powerless” I meant exactly what I said, power is NOT 0%. And yes, as person grows, that power/influence diminishes fast, so I would say early influence is especially crucial.

Btw. If all kids of a same parents have “bad manners” (kick and scream when others silently read), while all kids of other parent are well behaved (to a reasonable extent), then either manners are a genetical trait or maybe nurture part is quite an important thing.

I had 2 hour transfer in Frankfurt am Mein, so I wanted to do something that is Germany is know for, so I decided to get a nice doenner kebab (it was good :))

(Btw. Last week I was in Istanbul; maybe unlucky, but I did not like kebab in Turkey, ingredients were somehow strange)

It does not need to be 100% Russia operation. Some people did actually want nuclear shutdown (greens), Russia then just needs to help a little (in completely unrelated Mr. Gerhard S. has comfy chair at Rosneft)

Laymens guess what problems it could introduce:

Vacuum does not dissipate heat well (extra engineering in that department)

Vacuum is never 100% vacuum. If you have some dust in the air, it will mostly flow to the direction of the airflow, but in vacuum dust particles will do random walk thing and settle on surfaces.

falserum··on Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe
There are two fronts. If they like the discipline and if they follow rules.

In both cases I disagree (to some extent)

Parents are not powerless.

You can’t force love for geography, but you can choose to ignore or give full attention when child asks some geographical question.

Same with setting boundaries and teaching to follow the rules. Kids definitely test boundaries, and thats good, they should learn to negotiate and sometimes win, but still kids that know boundaries at home will know boundaries in the classroom.
