fdomig··on Why do railway tracks have crushed stones alongside them?
Awesome. I didn't expect my country to appear as an example for such an engineering masterpiece. Thanks for sharing.
fdomig··on Changes at YC
You are absolutely right. This is the only correct wording.
fdomig··on How messed up was Germany's energy policy?
Living in Germany I can add: Yes, shutting down nuclear power plants "so early" was naive, however, even the now horrible war in Ukraine boosts the process to migrate to (more) sustainable energy even faster. Also, pretty soon energy prices in Germany might be so much lower and this will be a key advantage.
fdomig··on Ask HN: What HN post made you money?
None.
fdomig··on Naomi Wu video demonetized on YouTube
That is America.

We need a European Alternative.

Anyways, heading to the sauna right now. Naked.

fdomig··on Making Games with Kotlin
We are using Kotlin in most of our backends running on AWS. We are very(!) happy with the Kotlin developer experience as well as the adoption curve that we have seen throughout our company. I can only highly recommend giving it a try and do not believe it is only meant for App development.
fdomig··on New MacBook Pro outsold every competing laptop in just five days
So I still have not found an answer on what is the real replacement for a MacBook Pro 15" for a professional developer these days? I cannot believe the Dell XPS or some Lenovos are the sole options out there targeted towards developers.

I want something, with good battery life, looking nice and having >16GB RAM, a decent screen & keyboard and not being too heavy. Any suggestions?

fdomig··on New MacBook Pro not compatible with all Thunderbolt 3 devices
You're just plug it in wrong.

fdomig··on New MacBook Pro not compatible with all Thunderbolt 3 devices

The version of OS X on the new MacBook Pros (late 2016)
will not work with existing Certified Thunderbolt 3 docks
and adapters (released prior to November 2016).
This is ridiculous.
fdomig··on From Mac to Linux: Web Development with Linux
Honestly, nice if that works easy for you when using just developer tools on the terminal or a text editor. As a web developer, though, you might end up using more than that. A Mac offers so much more commercial applications that just do not exist on any Linux distribution.

Gimp is no replacement for Photoshop and Inkscape is not replacement for Illustrator, ...

Btw, mostly everything you install with `apt-get` can be installed with `brew` as well (MongoDB, Elastic, nvm, etc.).

fdomig··on Distro Chooser
I bit odd not to ask for WHAT I care a lot. E.g. security, updates, age of packages, support, etc.
fdomig··on Headphones Everywhere
I might just not like to hear the loud outside world and block it with headphones.

fdomig··on Google: End of the Online Advertising Bubble
I, for one, welcome our new, ad free internet.

fdomig··on Which oils are best to cook with?
This is the essential thing. I do prefer fat over carbohydrates and I am quite healthy with that.

"After years of being told, and telling others, that
saturated fat clogs your arteries and makes you fat,
there is now mounting evidence that eating some
saturated fats may actually help you lose weight and
    be good for the heart"
fdomig··on Welcome to a week of Java
I for one have never been a huge fan of Java. But the success and achievements cannot be denied. So thanks for giving us some great articles from the Java world.
fdomig··on Tell HN: Why I Don't Supply My GitHub in Job Applications
I as an employee responsible for recruitment to some degree in our company find it always much more pleasant if an applicant provides his GitHub account unrequested. Showing some contribution or even own projects on GitHub gives me a much broader view of the applicant before even considering an invitation to an interview.

Since GitHub is the de-facto standard for many software projects it makes sense to have at least something on GitHub. I am fine with links to sourceforge, bitbucket, etc. as well.

fdomig··on HMAC in Go, Python, Ruby, PHP, and Node.js
There might be a chance of timing attacks against such "security". A secure system should never depend on obscurity.
fdomig··on Deploying Microservices to AWS at Gilt: Introducing ION-Roller
> https://github.com/gilt/ionroller

This does (currently) return a 404.

fdomig··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2015)
In Munich, 30 days of vacation is meanwhile already quite normal. Why do you offer 26 only?
fdomig··on Facebook Launches Flow, Static Type Checker for JavaScript
From my perspective, the static type checking is more or less the same as TypeScript's `--noImplicitAny` option as the first example on flowtype [1] shows, the same can be achieved with

    tsc --noImplicitAny hello.tsc
which will result in

hello.ts(2,14): error TS7006: Parameter 'x' implicitly has an 'any' type.
I do not see much difference.

fdomig··on Listen to a melody made by Wikipedia article changes
This is the coolest thing I -saw- heard today. Very nice.
fdomig··on How I Jump Started My App by Doing Things That Don't Scale
This is something we, at teamgeist.io, did wrong in the beginning as well. We moved to a more "Design Thinking" and "Lean Startup" approach to actually test our assumptions before we implement them. That helps a lot.
fdomig··on The hammer-feather drop in the world’s biggest vacuum chamber [video]
I love science. This is a very nice example of it.
fdomig··on The First Browser Dedicated to Developers Is Coming
This is like a landing page for a startup - or idea. They first test the assumption that developers need/want this. If they are proven right, they will build it. In the next seven days. ;-)
fdomig··on A basic guide to when and how to deploy HTTPS
I think there is absolutely no reason to NOT deploy HTTPS.
fdomig··on Show HN: an app I built to help you find great beer
I did a similar App for restaurants in another country, however, I did an Android and iOS version and found that much more people are using my Android app. The conversion rate seems to be better on Android as well.

So, I'd love to see this App on the Google Play store since I am a huge fan of great beer and the bars where to find them.
