ff10··on Living off-grid: Hundred Rabbits
From their own statement:

> Because of the decentralized nature of our work, this has to be spelled out quite clearly: Preparing for impending apocalyptic events should mean collective action and structural reform, not individualism and isolation.

ff10··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
Imagine if the atom bomb was created by private companies about to make their IPO.
ff10··on Polishing Cloth Updated
Are you able to fit an open MacBook Pro with nano texture finish into your pocket? If yes, you might have different problems (or benefits).
ff10··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra for a big leap in performance and AI compute
I think the reason they offer these options in the first place is the discontinuation of the MacPro and their remaining need to offer high end solutions.
ff10··on The AI bubble is popping; we just don't know it yet
I want to see the number of gamers that tear the chips from the dead hands of hyperscalers to make up for the implosion of that market. If I had to guess, half of humanity does not have interest in dedicated gaming chips. Memory, that's another story.
ff10··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
I secretly hope that Infantino goes ahead with it anyway. UEFA and others will form something new. Something that replaces the incredibly broken and corrupted FIFA with a de-facto and de-jure non-profit governing body.
ff10··on AI is just unauthorised plagiarism at a bigger scale
Nono, actually there are no thoughts. Every utterance is just a copy of a previous utterance plus a slight random mutation. (somewhat /s)

ff10··on GPT-4o
I tried to make ChatGPT generate a counterpoint for that but it turns out you're right.
ff10··on Apollo will close down on June 30th
Well, as it stands HN is like just another good subreddit.
ff10··on U-Bahn station in Berlin is decorated with radioactive uranium glazed tiles
Apparently the amount of radiation is safe:

In short: "According to experts the radiation is trivial."

ff10··on U-Bahn station in Berlin is decorated with radioactive uranium glazed tiles
Yes, Pfannkuchen is the name used in Berlin.
ff10··on The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2021
I guess it's alway a question of what audience you speak to. OPs explanation could probably be summarized in 2 sentences when aimed at chemists.
ff10··on How the World's First Computer Was Rescued from the Scrap Heap (2014)
Obligatory comment that the Z3 was the world's first digital computer. Not sure what the "real" refers to in the headline, but it turns out that the Z3 was indeed Turing complete.

ff10··on YouTube bans coronavirus-related content that directly contradicts WHO advice
You’re on a slippery slope and don’t consider that this is an exceptional situation. The danger of losing civil liberties comes when the exception becomes the rule.

AFAIK, no amendments have been violated since YouTube is a private entity. They can editorialize what they, how they want. It’s is their liberty to make a choice here, the same as your liberty to not support that choice.

ff10··on American Suburbs Swell Again as a New Generation Escapes the City
Take a guess.
ff10··on Germany's car industry faces a perfect storm
You imply that traditional dashboards are too complicated. However, Tesla is merely hiding that complexity behind one or a few screens an a few buttons. I like the approach to minimalism, but in my opinion there has to be a balance between pragmatism and beauty. The learning curve and ease of access is just lower in German (or traditional) dashboards in general. I am not sure if Tesla found that particular balance. I hear a lot of hate towards the giant screen and no love, but that is just anecdotal. I assume Tesla went so radical in the Model 3 to save costs, rather than to stay minimalistic.
ff10··on Gatwick drones: Two arrested over flight disruption
I wonder, does that mean loss of precision or complete failure?
ff10··on Wall Street Rule for the #MeToo Era: Avoid Women at All Cost
I wonder how gay men handle this situation. Are situations that are symmetrical to the heterosexual version causing similar issues?
ff10··on iPad Pro
For the record, it seems to work both ways with desktop Safari.
ff10··on Google drops plans for Berlin campus after protests
... or Adlershof for that matter.
ff10··on Tim Cook Says Apple Is Focusing on an Autonomous Car System
What does Apple stand for and why does it clash with a speculative future outlined here?
ff10··on iOS 11 Location Privacy: "Only While Using" is now always an option for users
iOS does that too – after a while of carrying it around.
ff10··on NSA secretly conducted illegal searches on Americans for years
You're exactly describing the reason why there is checks and balances. "People in power" is supposed to be a heterogenous group with different interests and formal functions. Your post suggests that it doesn't work properly in your country anymore. I wonder where exactly one could pinpoint the weak spots and systemic issues.
ff10··on Tesla Passes Ford by Market Value
Continue in the same vein: Musk works for Tesla.
ff10··on They Used To Last 50 Years
Miele, Neff, Liebherr, this is my go to when I plan to keep stuff for a decade or more. There's even a few more smaller high end brands from Germany. I bought a used Miele Toploader from the 90s. Miele says new ones will be good for about 20 years. So I probably have some more years with that one. Plus timeless, simple design, exceptional quality and very good cleaning performance. Note that I live in Germany. When I looked at Miele vacuum prices in a Macy's in California I had to choke a little.
ff10··on Don't Fly During Ramadan (2013)
Do you have any source of them passing around any images? Are they even able to do that without in-depth knowledge of the system?

Nah, I ain't that fast. There's a completely different story behind that but there's also a time and place for everything ;-)

Are you living in the US? That's a very broad question. Let me try to give you my impression in a few words...

I think the diversity situation is not as complex in Germany compared to the coastal areas in the US – if you're talking about ethnicity. Sexual orientation and identity is not as much of a big deal here as well. Not because those questions are frowned upon or considered unimportant, but because those things are looked at with a more relaxed, laissez-faire attitude, at least in the urban areas. It's much less charged with political and religious ideas and action, maybe also because those questions are considered _a bit_ more private as well.

Those are just my 2 cents though, maybe someone else can add his own view, I'd be very interested in that myself.

Same in Germany.
