fipple··on US iPhone users spent, on average, $79 on apps last year, up 36% from 2017
What apps are in the gray area? To me it’s pretty clear and not much room for “making an argument.”
fipple··on Lawyer in Charge of Apple’s Insider-Trading Policy Accused of Insider Trading
This isn’t an Apple “senior executive” exactly. Probably not one of the top 100 guys.
fipple··on Silicon Valley Is Using Trade Secrets to Hide Its Race Problem
The whole “diversity industry” (and it is a huge industry) is based on a lie... that “diversity” improves a company’s performance. The research on this is so shaky with so much empirical evidence to the contrary, and everyone knows it, which is why companies are trying to do nothing more than “lip service.”
fipple··on El Chapo Trial: Why His I.T. Guy Had a Nervous Breakdown
"this reminds me almost exactly of what I was asked to do while working for a short guy and his wife."

"What do you have against short men?"

fipple··on California will not complete $77B high-speed rail project: governor
This was always a fun duck idea made mainly to serve Central Valley towns whose population could not justify such an expensive boondoggle. Glad to see Newsom speak some truth and put an end to this lunacy.
fipple··on El Chapo Trial: Why His I.T. Guy Had a Nervous Breakdown
Because detail is how we bring stories to life. Otherwise all of our statements would be “I did a thing with a person.”
fipple··on Wondering about the link between intelligence and meaning
My working definition of religion is a system that produces easy answers to tough questions. These tough questions can eat away at a person so religion has an important “damping” function in a society, especially with the 90% of the population who need an answer to these questions to stay mentally healrhy
fipple··on Day Care for All
Great, Google gets 5 more years from its technical women while the kids are raised by government mouth breathers. No thanks
fipple··on Flight to China turned back after airline forgets to remove Taiwan reference
My values don’t contain anything about Taiwan. I’ll call whatever you want because I don’t think I have nearly enough contextual knowledge to know who is “right” and “wrong” in that conflict.
fipple··on Apple, Google criticised for Saudi Absher app that tracks women
It’s not that Amazon is primarily culpable, it is that a person in the US has more leverage, however minimal, over Amazon than over the Saudi king.
fipple··on Mars One, which offered 1-way trips to Mars, declared bankrupt
My friend "applied," knowing full well it was a scam. He said that he regretted nothing, as it allowed him to fantasize about the journey more concretely. So perhaps it served the same function as pornography.
fipple··on US iPhone users spent, on average, $79 on apps last year, up 36% from 2017
The median is certainly lower than $79, and may even be $0.
fipple··on SoftBank’s next bet: $940M into autonomous delivery startup Nuro
200 companies at $5m is only a billion dollars. Softbank is deploying close to 100 times that, so they write checks 100 times the size.
fipple··on Don't hold users hostage, facilitate their exit
The term “social justice warrior” doesn’t refer in modern parlance to people who leave bad reviews for SaaS products. It’s a term referring to a particular conflict in American culture/politics and just detracts from any point you’re trying to make.
fipple··on How to Convert a Free User to a Premium User
I used Dropbox’s 2GB for eight years before becoming a paying user.
fipple··on Facebook adds 5 divs, 9 spans and 30 CSS classes to every post in the timeline
Most henchmen don’t think their bosses are bad people, because they aspire to be their bosses, and people don’t think they’re bad themselves, even when they are.
fipple··on DoorDash and Amazon Won’t Change Tipping Policy After Instacart Controversy
Why shouldn’t they double up?
fipple··on DoorDash and Amazon Won’t Change Tipping Policy After Instacart Controversy
Reminds me of how some state governments say that “100% of our lottery profits go to the state university.” While not mentioning that they cut the university’s funding from the general budget by the same amount.
fipple··on Facebook adds 5 divs, 9 spans and 30 CSS classes to every post in the timeline
If you don’t want to participate in the central economic function of a company you would not have been a good hire regardless of technical skill. You don’t want employees who are willing to work at a company they think is a blight on humanity.
fipple··on Facebook adds 5 divs, 9 spans and 30 CSS classes to every post in the timeline
Yeah, but like any medical field, people come to you in extreme pain and leave without it. If you can’t find meaning in that you probably can’t find meaning in anything.
fipple··on They Don’t Make Music Like They Used To
Yes, I didn’t mean to an oscilloscope, I meant to a Homo sapiens.
fipple··on Where does a tip to an Amazon driver go? Sometimes, toward the driver's base pay
That’s why one of the Amazons is made illegal — so that individuals don’t have to make this choice. That’s what regulation is for.
fipple··on They Don’t Make Music Like They Used To
Apple earbuds are incredibly high sound quality. They are just really uncomfortable in my ears. And Spotify 320kbps is as good as CD.
fipple··on Apple tells app developers to disclose or remove screen recording code
I see this more of a perf thing than a privacy thing. Since most apps connect to a remote backend, any app developer can create backend tooling that perfectly recreates a user session from server logs, with local actions logged locally and uploaded on the next request. But they’re usually too lazy to, and waste my bandwidth by uploading logs directly from my phone to a third party.
fipple··on Saying Goodbye to Louisville
Moving to Louisville for Google Fiber would be a pretty reckless decision for a business which wasn’t wholly dependent on it (like a reseller or Google Fiber)
fipple··on Instacart and DoorDash’s Tip Policies Are Delivering Outrage
The minute I figured out you can adjust the Instacart fee to zero I did, and leave a fiver for the delivery person.
fipple··on Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation backtracks on one-year parental leaves
I had a company with roughly 10 engineers give or take over its lifetime. The two younger women never left. The men, younger and older, left at various times, one after 4 months, and one with 4 hours’ notice.
fipple··on Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation backtracks on one-year parental leaves
How they manage in Canada is that they have many fewer successful knowledge-based businesses per capita, at every level of success.
fipple··on Showing the power of startup women’s health brands, P&G buys This is L (YC S15)
You see this with everyone who has no exposure to a type of person. “How many people actually stand in LINE to buy sneakers?” “How many people are ACTUALLY going to vote for that clown?” Etc
fipple··on Real-time Continuous Transcription with Live Transcribe
Repairing one lane of a two way street is still useful. :)
