firefax··on Fake warnings of nuclear attack posted on Russian and Ukrainian emergency apps
You know, I'm a huge troll myself... but maybe don't tell innocent civvies they're about to die in a nuclear hellfire via the official app?

(Just a thought.)

firefax··on Supermarket freezers in Belgium and Sweden hit by suspected cyber-attack
>This first happened in France over three weeks ago. It's unforgivable that many chains have failed to update their software in time.

Came into the thread thinking it would be a new report about the same incident not a new one, yikes.

To be fair, wouldn't the chains probably be reliant on their vendors for an update? and turning off all the fridges for weeks is probably not a sustainable solution... :/

firefax··on An Arrogant Way of Killing (2016)
>This is the TrueCrypt guy.

It's since been audited and open sourced:

firefax··on Hackers expose the identities of more than 40k DHS employees
i love that book -- i once rolled into an in school suspension with a copy of "eichmann in jerusalem" in my backpack, as i was a troll from an early age.

(happy halloween, orange site.)

firefax··on An Arrogant Way of Killing (2016)
>I really resent pictures of human bodies being presented to me.

It's devil's night.

firefax··on An Arrogant Way of Killing (2016)
You believe in a singular Satoshi?
firefax··on Hackers expose the identities of more than 40k DHS employees
i had a woman i met at a policy conference confide that many bad people made it through both the nazi period and the east german times -- there's a type of sadist who maliciously complies with the rules in any way they can to the detriment of others who i despise and saw much too much of in the policy context.

i haven't been there in a long time, but this hacker looking across the pond, it looks like germany has changed...

i worry too many hackers have not sufficiently studied history.

firefax··on Hackers expose the identities of more than 40k DHS employees
a friend found it when fucking around with a DNS enumeration tool a while back.

lite.cnn.com is also useful on slow connections

(i post using tor.)

firefax··on Why Is This Fingerprinting Script Creating Bioweapons?
I like how your website renders well with javascript disabled :-)
firefax··on The Great Schlep: Israelis Are Flying Back to Vote
>Here in Oslo, the local elections some years ago was decided by six votes

Sometimes it's not about "the numbers" -- it's about sending a message. As the article mentioned:

>Kariv is a veteran of the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet, Israel’s intelligence agency, but he has been horrified by recent events

It's my understanding it's rare to state that publicly, and even rarer to pair it with a political call to action.

I am not Israeli, but soon I too will physically stride into a polling place (rather than mail in a ballot).

I will do this because while I think vote by mail is important sometimes it is also important to teach a certain personality that voter intimidation will not be tolerated.

firefax··on United Airlines CEO Calls for National Wealth Tax
I see I aligned myself well when I joined the Star Alliance.

I had a professor give me sage advice when I enrolled in my PhD program: one hotel chain, one airline program, and hoard those points for your honeymoon... or your elopement.

(Fuck a big wedding... I wanna make a call from one of those fancy plane phones to announce sitting hand in hand we're not coming back for a very long time.)

firefax··on AfD Leak: What 421,179 Hacked Emails Show about the German Far Right
Thanks to everyone who commented -- I'm not German so I'm not going to wade into the discussion on this particular thread.

Good luck comrades!

firefax··on Local Wikipedia: Wikipedia, but only for things a half hour walk from you
Wikivoyage is a useful alternative to those expensive Lonely Planet books, though they got a little manic about having each district of a city have it's own page in some smaller areas.
firefax··on Ask HN: How do you build a reputation without social media?
Whatever happened to offline reputation? In my opinion, real ultimate power comes from using social media to boost ideas rather than oneself... you have to assemble yourself a "following" in the offline sense if you want to be successful in life, the universe, and everything.

Once you're "cool", once you've had your moment of applause (or if you really pull it off, once you've had your name chanted over and over by a crowd)... then the sky (or the stars) is the limit.

How do you become cool?

I can't give you a FAQ or walkthrough, but whether your passions lie in art or science focusing on your passions and sharing what you come up with seems to be a core component.

I'd focus on following your passions OP, the time you save not scrolling Reddit or whatever will pay off in spades when you have some project or artwork you've created.

Past performance is no guarantee of future results OP... focus on being your authentic self, focus on being productive and not just doomscrolling, and I suspect eventually good things will come, because your following you've built up offline will boost you when you decide to make that leap onto social media.

firefax··on Documents add to evidence in climate deception case against ExxonMobil
>Its time to finally bring in the corporate death penalty.

Corporations are made of people :-)

(Also: I agree.)

firefax··on A statement on the Tor Project's relationship with Mullvad
>I am sick to death of the overapplication of the word “fascism”. It doesn’t mean “bad thing”.

So you admit they are a "bad thing", but you are annoyed I used the wrong word?

firefax··on Reasons I didn't become an EMT, ranked
i'm probably not a cultural fit, i was just curious
firefax··on A statement on the Tor Project's relationship with Mullvad
> There's no better definition of being punished for a political opinion than being punished to donating to a legitimate party.

Maybe being punished for some political opinions isn't a bad thing, if your political opinion is "some people don't deserve human rights" :-)

firefax··on A statement on the Tor Project's relationship with Mullvad
>Daniel Berntsson the co-owner of Mullvad, donated approximately US$500,000 to the far-right Örebro Party in Sweden

Thank you for naming the party donated to.

It's a shame that refusing to consort with fascists is conflated with "being political".

One of the reasons I left so called "civil" society is that for lack of a better phrasing I often found the tent to be too big.

firefax··on Why Common Lisp is now the best programming language
I know math.

Not a ton, but apparently I understand statistics better than most.

firefax··on Ask HN: What happened with quantum computers anyway?
i had a coworker who interned at the nsa, who when i tried to ask some questions about the publicly available research on the subject rolled his eyes and said "they can see everything".

i have no idea if he was lying or not, but i had a pattern in my early 20s of people revealing information they shouldn't then gatekeeping my career for not keeping it as confidential as they'd like...

(if you're reading this "comrade": i'm just a rational actor responding to incentives.)

firefax··on Why Common Lisp is now the best programming language
lisp is like animé -- while it has many redeeming qualities...

the superfans make me not want to explore it ;-)

firefax··on Reasons I didn't become an EMT, ranked

firefax··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Eichmann in Jerusalem
firefax··on Suicides in 5 Weeks. What's Going on at Cyber Command at Fort Meade?

firefax··on Suicides in 5 Weeks. What's Going on at Cyber Command at Fort Meade?
>Must be hard living with yourself after you are part of the machine that bombs multiple schools with kids.

My career was defined by refusal to participate in that machine, and what breaks my heart decades later is that the folks who presented themselves as my allies gatekept my path because they wanted a "good source" more than they wanted a true ally

firefax··on Kids turned low-traffic NPR Spotify comments into a secret group chat

firefax··on Show HN: Air-gapped file encryption as self-decrypting HTML page
cool project!

also does everyone have to enable js to vote, or did i troll too hard? (sorry!)

firefax··on Ask HN: What is the most career altering course or book you have gone through?
Two books I read after 9/11 shaped my path greatly:

1.) Stasi: The Untold Story Of The East German Secret Police

ISBN #: 0813337445

2.) The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich

ISBN #: 9780671728694

Both should be available in most public libraries, but with the ISBN you can usually get almost anything via inter-library loan.

firefax··on Ask HN: Why don't we bring back old school OkCupid?
there's less breakups than people entering the market and most normal people don't wanna scoop them up the second they graduate -- at least not if you're gunning for marriage
