folz··on Fast UI Draw is a library that provides a higher performance Canvas interface
(Disclaimer: Not a lawyer, but a number of my projects are licensed under MPL)

As I read it, the only time the MPL requires you to share source code is when you modify files belonging to the MPL-covered library. Even then, it only requires you to share the changes you made to the library - you don't have to share any of your proprietary or non-MPL code.

From TL;DRLegal: "You must make the source code for any of your changes available under MPL, but you can combine the MPL software with proprietary code, as long as you keep the MPL code in separate files."

So - did you install a MPL library using a package manager like npm or pip? You do not have to share your project's code.

Did you copy/paste a MPL library into a /vendor/mpl-library/ directory? You do not have to share your projects code.

Did you copy/paste functions from a MPL library directly into your source code? In this case, you may have to share the file you pasted into, but not any other files in your project.

Overall, I think the MPL strikes a great balance between the "do what you want" crowd and the "people should give back to projects that help them" crowd, which is why it's my go-to license for most libraries these days.

folz··on Show HN: UI Playbook – A documented collection of UI components
If I had to guess, the point is that OP enjoys learning about design systems and is trying to create a resource for other people to also learn from. Tons of knowledge already exists, but that doesn't stop people from trying to create or share new approaches to it anyway.

folz··on Why We Don’t Employ Female Developers
What a flamebait title. Sure, don't hire someone just because they're a woman. Consider each candidate based on their merits. Etc, etc. But if you look at your hiring funnel and it's entirely men, something needs to change. Hard to consider the merit of women engineers if you don't have any women whose merit you can consider.

Thistle (thistle.co) | VP Engineering, Senior Software Engineer, Product Manager | San Francisco, CA | Fulltime, Onsite

Thistle is an early stage food-tech startup empowering our customers to eat better. We design high-quality plant-based food and serve it throughout California. We don’t want to be just another meal-kit company and have some key differentiators from our competitors: we put the nutritional wellness of our customers first, we make delicious meals that people actually enjoy eating, and unlike most food startups, we are both profitable and growing fast.

We are hiring experienced software engineers, product managers, and a VP of Engineering so we can scale to meet our customer demand and operational needs. Stack is Python, Django, Javascript, React, React Native. We value good engineering practices: we write maintainable code, review each others' work, use tests and static analysis tools to help catch mistakes, and have a CI pipeline to release often.

If you care about making peoples' lives better through good food or if you're interested in the challenges of delivering nutrition at scale, you'll love it at Thistle. Any questions, drop me a line: rodney 𝒶𝓉 thistle 𝒹ℴ𝓉 co

folz··on Proposed “Internet Freedom Act” permanently guts net neutrality authority
In many parts of the country, consumers don't have the luxury of choice between ISPs. Heck, I live in the Bay Area and my two options are between Comcast Xfinity and Comcast for Business. (I went for the latter because they have slightly stronger promises around my personal information.) I have to do business with Comcast because I need internet service, and I have no other reasonable source for it.

Thistle | Software Engineer | San Francisco, CA | Onsite, https://jobs.lever.co/thistle.co/4a7a1753-162c-4dae-87b7-b10...

Thistle delivers delicious, organic and healthy meals as a subscription - "put your diet on autopilot". We're an early-stage, rapidly growing health & wellness startup in the Bay Area.

We're hiring software engineers (senior and junior; we're good about on-the-job training) for:

- Building our consumer website, with a focus on helping customers understand all the nutrition and health benefits in their meals.

- Kitchen/Ops infrastructure for designing, preparing and delivering thousands of meals in a day.

- Growth: Experiment with new user acquisition and engagement strategies.

I'm also a software engineer here - I actually joined Thistle after reaching out from an earlier HN Hiring thread. It works!

Our stack is Python/Django on the backend, some Javascript on the frontend, (forthcoming) app in React Native. Experience with those technologies is a plus but not required - if you're a fast learner we will be just as interested in what you like to eat for lunch.

Interview: phone screen, then visit HQ to try the food and discuss/pair program with our codebase. No brainteasers.

Apply at https://jobs.lever.co/thistle.co/4a7a1753-162c-4dae-87b7-b10... and if you have any questions or just want to chat, feel free to email me <rodney> AT <thistle>.<co>. Please, no recruiters or agencies!

folz··on The Django Project Debates User Tracking

folz··on Show HN: Hackers New - show stories from /newest on your HN front page.
Hey HN, my weekend project was a browser extension for Firefox and Chrome that displays items from /newest on the front page.

The idea came from some comments I saw a couple days ago. The gist was that because very few people actually check /newest, getting a story out of /newest usually requires an upvote ring, existing fame, or luck. I'm hoping that by including new stories on the front page, I'll get myself to check them out and upvote them more often than I currently do.

The extension chooses stories at random from /newest and includes them on your front page. The stories get re-chosen every fifteen minutes. You can upvote them from the front page just like you would from /newest.

Links to the extension are in the repo!

folz··on I called the Wells Fargo ethics line and was fired
"The bank earlier this month paid $185 million in penalties and has since apologized."

Wells Fargo has a yearly revenue of $86b, so the $185m fine is like someone who makes $100k a year getting fined $215.

folz··on Is having a '.name' email address a good idea?
I used to run a minecraft server for my friends on $NAME.com and still own the domain. There's apparently a construction company also called $NAME, and they own $NAME.net. $NAME.net is on all their branding, emails, contact info. As far as I know, they've never used $NAME.com.

I routinely get email meant for them sent to to $NAME.com, sometimes including personal information, and sometimes from employees at the company. I guess their clients assume that businesses always own the dot-com for their name and don't think to verify the actual address (I'm not sure why the employees don't know their own email addresses).

Because of that experience, I try to own the dot-com for any project I start.

folz··on Duffy and Cruz Introduce the Protecting Internet Freedom Act
Ah, thanks very much! For confused readers like me, http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB100014240527023035462045794396... is a good article linked from the Wikipedia page.

(Google the title "U.S. Plans to Give Up Oversight of Web Domain Manager" and click through from search to avoid the paywall.)

folz··on Duffy and Cruz Introduce the Protecting Internet Freedom Act
Sorry if I'm missing something, but what's the context for "President Obama wants to hand over the keys to the Internet to countries like China and Russia"? I can't seem to find the right phrases to google.
folz··on WhatsApp's Signal Protocol integration is now complete
Nope. From the article: "Once a client recognizes a contact as being fully e2e capable, it will not permit transmitting plaintext to that contact, even if that contact were to downgrade to a version of the software that is not fully e2e capable. This prevents the server or a network attacker from being able to perform a downgrade attack."
folz··on How Hack the North wasn’t the bomb
Unfortunately they did. It's buried in the Sanctioning Agreement, but by accepting MLH sanctioning (which is done via a legally binding contract) you allow MLH authority over who attends the event. They don't advertise this fact very much.
folz··on Selling Out and the Death of Hacker Culture
That could be interesting, but as a collegiate organizer I'm worried that a lot of students wouldn't have the means to participate. $100 is roughly double what's in my bank account right now :)
folz··on Selling Out and the Death of Hacker Culture
Author here. This was written for Hackathon Hackers, a group of people who go to collegiate hackathons, to (1) critique what I perceive to be our community's focus on measuring success by $$$ and size instead of individual impact, and (2) express my displeasure with the way we've let corporations take over community events.

Especially re: @candu's and @detaro's comments, I agree that there are lots of community-supported meetups and spaces. However, I don't find that the collegiate community gives much, if any, weight to these sorts of events - there's a glorification of giant hackathon events that far outweighs anything else. I know where to look, but someone newer to the scene will only see the sort of event that I criticize. My hyperbolic title is a rhetorical device to counteract the marketing machine that MLH and hackathons have going :)

folz··on Teacher spends two days as a student and is shocked at what she learns
Saved you a click (from the top comment the last time this was posted):

The three points from the article:

> [1] Students sit all day, and sitting is exhausting.

> [2] High School students are sitting passively and listening during approximately 90% of their classes.

> [3] You feel a little bit like a nuisance all day long.

People wonder why high school aged students are unruly, unpleasant, and filled with deep negative emotions (anger, disdain, need-to-rebel). I look at this list (especially [2] and the lack of autonomy that follows) and the reason seems really clear. The basic model seems broken.

folz··on Unsticker Me – Get rid of Facebook stickers in comments
Maybe (although I think the class names I used are going to be constant), but it should be easy to update the CSS if that happens.
folz··on Unsticker Me – Get rid of Facebook stickers in comments
Oh yeah, it's really bad code. The idea was only going to be topical for a few hours after Facebook launched sticker comments, so I went for working MVP over code purity. The grunt file in particular was automatically created by the yeoman chrome-extension generator.
folz··on Unsticker Me – Get rid of Facebook stickers in comments
True, but that cuts the potential user base from {people using either Chrome or Firefox} to {those people, but they also have to have a niche addon already installed}.

Also I wasn't sure if I'd need fancy javascript logic or not to get unsticker.me working. I'm just happy it only took those 8 lines of CSS.

folz··on Unsticker Me – Get rid of Facebook stickers in comments
Eh - it was my first time making either a Firefox or Chrome addon, so I just used the existing scaffolding for both. `cfx init` and `yo chrome-extension` might have been overkill but it helped me crank out two extensions in no time flat.
