freddealmeida··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
An old story. I used to work for Fox Home Entertainment (CDs etc)this is 20+ years ago. And we had proper DOS running on old machines. We used it to do all our finances (including all of Japan, Asia sales). Most of the money we made on movies like Titanic were tracked on DOS. Until about 2003 if memory serves me where we moved to SAP. Why this was worrisome was how easily fraud occurred. In my tenure there $5-10M was stolen. At the time sent to companies in Brazil. I'm still surprised by larger firms where they keep these things alive to retain the data. CocaCola did it. A few large Insurance firms too. Crazy.
freddealmeida··on One Piece of Flock Camera Data Put This Innocent Woman in Jail for 13 Days
Flock did not put the woman in jail. The police and DA put her in Jail. This is not a failure of the technology (do they have confidence levels?). This is a failure of how police are outsourcing their reasoning and decision making to an AI camera service that seems to fail at the tail.
freddealmeida··on Ask HN: How do I find startups that are looking for a dev? How to approach them?
vibe code the same app and send them a link to it. Raise money to buy them out and make them work for you. Anything is possible in the AI world
freddealmeida··on Border Agents Can Search Your Phone by Hand, No Suspicion Needed
I think this is fine if you are not a citizen. But if you are, no way. We do not owe any non-citizen privacy if they want to visit America.
freddealmeida··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
coding is not understanding, nor is it architecture. And debt is always there. No matter who writes it. But I think it can be better.
freddealmeida··on Palo Alto CEO Arora says AI pricing needs to fall 90% as token costs skyrocket
only one way to do that. Opensource self hosting. We get about 1 billion tokens (up and down) for $3000~ including server costs. Great for long running agents. I even point claudecode to it and it works fine. Near fable levels in some cases.
freddealmeida··on Spanish government 'quietly bans use of Palantir' in critical state systems
By that, they mean they don't want Palantir to see what is going on in those systems. Palantir has an unmodifiable blockchain to track all additions, changes and modifications, and deletions and by whom. No way to cheat. In many ways, Palantir is so much safer than any other system. But my guess is there are things they don't want the Trump DSI/NSA/CIA/Military Intelligence to see.
freddealmeida··on WH proposes rules giving political appointees final approval on research grants
Governemnt money should be approved by elected politicians or the President's electives. Until now the approach has led to abuse in many ways. Especially gatekeeping by professors on new ideas. Cold fusion comes to mind. Probably put behind by 40 years. I do not mind this new strategy by the President at all.
freddealmeida··on ACLU Secures $485,000 Settlement for FWC Biologist Fired over Charlie Kirk Post
That post was disgusting. He shouldn't find a job anytime soon. But being fired for speech is wrong. So from that point, he deserves the settlement. But I certainly don't want to be near someone that revels in someone's assassination.
freddealmeida··on How Mamdani and Hochul Are Solving New York City's Budget Crisis
They are cheating. 100%. I want a full audit.
freddealmeida··on How Pope Leo is pushing back on divine justification of war
Good luck on that one. God often requires us to go to war in the bible. Once he even asked for the total destruction of a whole culture. Man, woman and child. Divine justification is perfectly fine. Much like some wars we consider just (WWI, WWII, and hundred others). War is bad the weak always say. Yet anyone that studies it knows it is often needed, is often leveraged to achieve other goals unachievable without it, and sometimes it is justified, and sometimes it is divine. We will see other wars soon spurned and and supported by God. The Pope can not stop God. Maybe not even interpret him.
freddealmeida··on “Captain Gains” on Capitol Hill
lol. Sure they are. Totally massive skills.
freddealmeida··on Gardening Boosts Brain Health
I suggest it is not the gardening but the sun that is giving this benefit.
freddealmeida··on I gave the AI arms and legs then it rejected me
I hate workday.
freddealmeida··on I gave the AI arms and legs then it rejected me
At my firms I saw this happen often. HR would review, or a junior engineer and pass on very good candidates. It wasn't until I set up a review system with A-class engineers that we started to catch the best people. A-class engineers recognize themselves far better than anyone else. But they prefer to build than review resumes.

I ended up building my own head hunting firm specifically to address the whole pipeline. That helped somewhat but head hunting is its own very odd space. Full of inefficiencies and bias.

With any AI company, there are always limits you hit. Energy, compute, optimizations, inference, team resources, money, and all the flows to make it a company. HR is usually the one that gets the fewest resources.

freddealmeida··on Mira Murati’s AI startup Thinking Machines valued at $12B in early-stage funding
Sheesh. 12B. Here I am working my ass off for $25M.
freddealmeida··on Ukrainian hackers destroyed the IT infrastructure of Russian drone manufacturer
Chamath's new company 80/90 is targeting this pain. Large firms often have no idea what their software is trying to do. Rebuilding it is cheaper and leads to better software.
freddealmeida··on Nail salon employee pleads guilty after holding 13 remote IT jobs
That title is very misleading. The facts are convoluted as well. This is a mix of greed, espionage, incompetent government agencies, and companies that do not vet their remote workers yet giving them access to software and data they shouldn't have. Crazy. But with the stories coming out of DOGE, I am not even shocked. At least in this case one person (out of how many?) is going to jail. How many more of these people exist in the US now?
freddealmeida··on London's National Gallery purchases a painting by an unknown artist for $20M
Same. Thought this was just another tax scam.
freddealmeida··on Vibe Coding is not an excuse for low-quality work
Vibe coding for me meant a roll-the-dice approach to building something that world. Never a care for strong architecture or good code standards. Allowing anyone to become an "engineer". A friend of mine, who can't code, used Cursor to build fully functional Nextjs web apps. I was impressed. Vibe coding is a super power for average people.

I do think this article fully grasps that change. Using AI to do tasks is not vibe coding. At least to me.

When will the first vibe coding book come out I wonder?

freddealmeida··on A 1980s toy robot arm inspired modern robotics
Hahaha. I had one and look at that I worked in robotics and AI. Never realized that before. Toys do have impact, don't they?
freddealmeida··on Fintech founder charged with fraud; AI app found to be humans in the Philippines
Wait the philipines is real?!
freddealmeida··on I got kicked out of Columbia for taking a stand against LeetCode interviews
Why the hate for leetcode testing?
freddealmeida··on U.S. Government Removes Tornado Cash Sanctions
Tornado Cash is a 1A issue. Should never have been pulled down.
freddealmeida··on Open-R1: an open reproduction of DeepSeek-R1
how is this open vs whatdeepseek did?
freddealmeida··on Nvidia’s $589B DeepSeek rout
funny thing is they prob had a position to make bank off that. smart.
freddealmeida··on Human corpses keep moving for over a year after death, scientist says (2019)
we are never really dead
freddealmeida··on I Met Paul Graham Once
I met many people that met Paul Graham once. 2 > 1. right? Not sure Paul would ever have invested in my companies. But the world is smaller than you think.
freddealmeida··on Research Finds Vaccines Are Not Behind the Rise in Autism. So What Is?
These studies are not well formed. There is an easier way to test for vaccine damage leading to autism. Compare children with any dosage of vaccines vs children that never received any dosage of a vaccine. The Amish in a very good study found that no Amish born children had autism. A rate of 0. Compared to those children that had autism all have been vaccinated. This enough is for me to know that while one or a single dose does not lead to autism possibly (though i have doubts here too) that many dosages of various vaccines combined in certain ways may lead to autism. This causal path is complex, for certain, but it is clear it is a non zero probability that you will be autistic (and if you watch that new show, telepathic).
freddealmeida··on America Is Suddenly Getting Healthier. No One Knows Why.
If you want to see if America is getting healthier, look at any large insurance firm's actuaries on current rates of mortality. They are predicting fairly unusual patterns suggesting American's are becoming unnaturally sick and dying at a higher rate than before 2020. These kind of articles are just trying to undermine the new administrations attempts to correct for this.
