gauchojs··on Poll: Where do you live?
Do you recommend a Porto Alegrer move to Floripa? My work is remote now...
gauchojs··on Ask HN: Is the past disappearing on the web?
Most likely, see https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2602187
gauchojs··on How to rest well
Me too - but I stopped for 30 days and didn't cut other caffeine sources..
gauchojs··on Upcoming Features in Go 1.18
Can generic sorting be implemented now ?
gauchojs··on Write thin to write fast
VsCode: a single thin column is possible: turn on Zen Mode, word Wrap, and slide the bar for a thin editor.
gauchojs··on My Emacs Lisp book is finished
I'm on mobile but check the sample, the author mentions an introductory resource.
gauchojs··on The metaverse is already here – it's Minecraft
As a parent of a 2 year old, I think I'll play again when he plays!
gauchojs··on Ask HN: What’s your goto website for finding work?
todoist.com (sry, sry)
gauchojs··on Ask HN: Whatever happened to exploring the internet?
Wow, just seeing "pure meat" results like this throws me back to another time...

gauchojs··on Ask HN: How do you do notes for a project?
Not exactly what you asked, but one idea I just picked is keeping a proper Changelog, ie, stop assuming that "Git history solved that".

And a good way to write those is to have a `## Unreleased` entry on top of `CHANGELOG.md` - the idea is to add tasks as they are being completed.

Then when a version is published/tagged/milestone, replace the "Unreleased" with "v1.2.3".

gauchojs··on Chat for every GitHub repository. Real-time
Gitter?
gauchojs··on Ask HN: What’s your favorite tool for planning your day?
Love Dynalist too - using the "native" app on MacOS today. Have you tried checkvist ? Not as good looking but great Vim-inspired shortcuts.
gauchojs··on DuckDuckGo as a TTY
First test:

    $ 6km in miles

gauchojs··on What do you really want from a computer monitor?
Great viewing angle. My 27" 4k looks "dark" in the corners from a center position.

I'd also prefer a display with integrated speakers so that a Chromecast could easily turn it into something useful when it gets replaced.

(I would probably try a Ultrawide next time, since its not a big difference in veritcal space with this monitor (scaled) compared to my old 22" display)

gauchojs··on Ask HN: Have you learned / tried to learn Vim? How did you approach it?
I'm pretty skilled and love the modal mindset - but still feel like I'm faster with Vscode, with less effort.

You can do so much with multiple cursors and a few extensions (expand selection to bracket, insert numbers, and align cursors are the operations I use the most).

gauchojs··on Spork: Peer-to-peer socket magic in the air
Yeah - this could work for more people if they had a small app that opened "Spork urls" spork://whattzzuu5drxwdwi6xbijjf7yt56l5adzht7j7kjvfped7amova
gauchojs··on Ask HN: How did you recover from burnout?
Off topic: are you still abstaining from caffeine?

(Explanation: arrived at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15015671 when searching about "quitting"caffeine"for the Nth time..)

gauchojs··on GNU nano is my editor of choice
100%. If I understand correctly. to change a single line (say some behaviour that is wrong for your workflow) of a VSCode plugin you have to fork it on Github.

In Emacs it would probably be a short snippet, tested in your scratch buffer and added to the end of your init.el:

    (add-hook 'vscode-todoist-xxx-hook ...)
This is what I miss the most about Emacs - what I don't miss is the endless configuration/tweaking...
gauchojs··on We Still Don’t Get Things Done
Did you write more about it here or elsewhere?
gauchojs··on 38% of remote workers work from bed
When I tried that, I found that as soon as I wanted to alternate into more "passive mode" (Youtube, reading a blog post) standing didn't work. I like the stool idea, would love to try standing desk one day again.
gauchojs··on The Tyranny of Spreadsheets
And then there's the pricing.. "We already have Google". No way my company would pay for Airtable, Notion, etc

Its spreadsheets all the way.

gauchojs··on DaisyUI – Tailwind CSS Components
I feel like designing for the web is so hard compared to elements that work on the phone. This elements look very "phone sized".
gauchojs··on Show HN: Obsidian for Mobile – Plain-text knowledge base on the go
OTOH... I kinda assumed outlining was awesome for taking notes and jumped on the Roam (and Logseq) hype train, but recently noticed how "thinking" with free text works better in most cases. Markdown lists in Obsidian/VsCode when lists are really needed.a
gauchojs··on Ask HN: How do I come up with monetizable SaaS side project ideas?
You can even use https://ideasai.net/ to get ideas on your email!
gauchojs··on Yamaha MOTOROiD
I love the sound of engines and find videos likehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baGM9StRJfI very relaxing. (Of course, living near a busy street and having to endure tens of bikes at the same time is another thing).
gauchojs··on Transiting the Suez Canal in a Private Sailboat (2003)
I find it very interesting. Most of us are more used to highways and airports. The problems one usually has are "if you don't have the documents with you, you go home/get on the next flight".

But in "boat world", delaying a trip a few days is no big deal. So things move slowly, there's time for all this cigarette song and dance, etc. This story has some old world charm in some sense.

Of course bribery is not cool, but in other ways I'm glad the whole world isn't (wasn't.. 2003) so homogeneous, and would prefer it to remain that way because its more interesting.

gauchojs··on Write Simply
Wow - I though the highest comment would just praise pg and his essays. I love his essays.
gauchojs··on A Vim Guide for Advanced Users
For my daily tasks, VSCode works better than Vim. But, sometimes, I'll have to do a macro in Vim, end up staying there for a couple of days and I have to admit: using those commands, motions and macros is pretty fun. It feels like gamifying work for me, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the frequently boring tasks.

Eventually I notice that I'm playing with Vim instead of finishing tasks, and go back to VSCode...

gauchojs··on Show HN: Split Keyboards Gallery
Do you think a keyboard like that is mainly helpful for people with pain, or it would make typing more comfortable/efficient for the general user ?
gauchojs··on Still alive
Is there something similar for theist catholic programmers?
