gavmor··on Show HN: HackerTV – HN's most-recommended Youtube videos as 24/7 TV channels
Yup, exactly what I wanted as soon as I saw Hackertube
gavmor··on Qwen 3.8 27B on my laptop can interpret model weights, too
Not so sure mammals are "superior" to plants, nor fungi.
gavmor··on Ask HN: What hardware are you using to run local LLMs?
Wow, this seems to speed up inference by 68% or something for me. Holy shit.
gavmor··on The AI cost of JavaScript frameworks
Python is worse about this proliferation, despite the advice of its built-in koan (see: `import this`).

Sure with JavaScript's library a-la-carte fashion there's a proliferation of idioms far beyond eg Ruby's hegemonic "convention over configuration", but nevertheless React is still more of a lingua franca than Flask/FastAPI/SQLAlchemy ever was or will be. The most popular Python libraries do a thing and otherwise proscribe nothing.

JavaScript idioms pare down the universe of possibilities in a way that some programmers find claustrophobic, and Python is the wild west!

I know it's popular to characterize JavaScript as the wild west, but in that case it's a proliferation of abstractions, whereas with python, it's a proliferation of implementations, ie primitive obsession.

But I'm really putting far too fine a point on these differences. In the grand scheme of things, they are nigh indistinguishable scripting languages.

gavmor··on Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it
Define "advance"!

LLM agents are perfectly capable of "advancing" my codebase down bizarre, esoteric rabbitholes. Meanwhile, the value remains undelivered.

Many crystals, likewise, are advancing their fantastic complexities in the deep, dark recesses beneath the crust of the earth, but does it make a sound? Who gives a shit.

Many paperclips, indeed, can be churned out. Even we can be converted into paperclips, remember.

gavmor··on GPT-5.6 Sol can beat Factorio on peaceful mode
Coding agents are bad at architecture, Exhibit no. 12057.
gavmor··on Fiber lasts decades, GPUs last three years: the AI boom isn't the dot-com boom [video]
Oops, I read it as bullish. 98.6% utilization? Seems like demand for more capacity.
gavmor··on The 'else' keyword is probably a literal translation from German (2020)
I can't think of anything else.
gavmor··on Image generation has come a long way since August 2022
I don't do extremely regular image gen, but I've been running ComfyUI on my 3090 for, jeeze, two years?

Here's my homelab blog: https://www.gavmor.com/regular-labs/

Maybe I'm just not that observant, but all these pictures are just... "LGTM."

When I'm generating, I have really specific adherence/performance goals.

gavmor··on Image generation has come a long way since August 2022
Images without prompts and statistics are... meaningless. We don't know if/how these adhere, whether they took a thousand hours or a thousandth of a second.

> “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”

> “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.

> “I don’t much care where—” said Alice.

> “Then it doesn’t matter which way you walk,” said the Cat.

gavmor··on Formlabs Studio 1 $699 Resin Printer
Seems to be sharper, faster, and larger in volume than their previous offerings—and for < half the price, too!

Pretty cool.

gavmor··on Danish Government silently drops plan to dump MS Office
At what point does implementing it yourself become a savings?
gavmor··on Weball: Play Katamari on Websites
Horrible framerate after a few hundred words, but super fun until then! I love the special touch of the large images being true obstacles.
gavmor··on Show HN: 500 clocks in one 6.3 MB HTML file by Opus 5.5
Gosh, these are so enticing yet such a let down.

For example, the Lorenz Attractor which, apparently, doesn't have anything to do with the clock.

gavmor··on FLUX 3 Image Klein
What is meant by "understanding" the likelihood?

Diffusion models, surely, are "trained with next-[pixel] prediction", and that should suffice, no?

gavmor··on FLUX 3 Image Klein
At first, I considered that diffusion models struggle with reasoning because they underweight 'prior beliefs', ie the propositions by which an argument advances.

Then I considered whether the universe of imagery is simply smaller than the universe of ideas—which must, itself, include the universe of images, too.

But finally, I'm thinking maybe images are just harder to benchmark.

Or maybe they're _not_ actually worth 1,000 words.

My public highschool English teacher.
gavmor··on Show HN: Edi Life OS – self-hosted life dashboard with an MCP server for AI
Come on—yes, that's the tradeoff. Find the balance that fits the project.
gavmor··on The tilde in your PATH may not be your HOME
At what point does an alternate shell get baked into the image?
gavmor··on Show HN: Edi Life OS – self-hosted life dashboard with an MCP server for AI
The purpose of node_modules is to reduce the surface of ancillary code which one must maintain.

This allows the maintainer to focus on business logic, delegating universal, undifferentiating concerns to projects that respect those concerns as their own raison d'etre.

Thus is all running software respected as central, and not peripheral, during its development. This raises the quality of the code—increasing functionality, and reducing defects.

gavmor··on Animated ASCII Art for Web Pages
Gorgeous, impressive, well done—

But it strikes me as an affectation of technical austerity, i.e. you’re borrowing the credibility of a constrained medium without embracing its constraints.

Again, it's very pretty but... it's a bit like reconfiguring your Tesla to look more like a Citroën 2CV.

gavmor··on Open Source as We Know It Is Dead
Ah, is it September[0] again already? Yes, our fun little clubs get popular, and the posers move in, and they're cheating or, well, they're not really cheating per se, but they're just no fun to play with, and they seem to be having fun without us, so we're going to take our ball and go home.

I can't really blame anyone involved in either side of the equation--Sindre Sorhus doesn't blame AI, and OP doesn't blame maintainers--this is just the natural evolution of.. everything! That which does not go extinct... evolves.

Or is it the other way around?

Doula your grief.

Oh, excellent. I will jam that sucker full of Hilbert curves.
gavmor··on Show HN: Our space game has a built-in RISC-V emulator that runs Linux

In what ways?

gavmor··on Pi Durable
First I'm hearing of Dagger.

I'm still using Concourse every day... for fun (and GPU mutex) — I guess I'll switch to Dagger? If it's light enough to run agents, I'm very curious.

gavmor··on DeepSeek Harness Desktop for macOS and Windows
... then what's the point of the harness?
gavmor··on Don't be fooled–LLMs don't reason
Yes, this is true—there's no "logic" in the sense of deductive rigor. It's a wonder we animals are capable of it.
gavmor··on I made a visual workspace for AI Automations
I've experimented with _Munder Difflin_, but it didn't provide enough transparency. I went back to micromanaging with _Agents of Empire._

I've also made extensive use of Hermes' built-in Kanban plugin, but somehow it's better than Munder Difflin's, even though I've _less_ transparency into individual Hermes kanban agents in "bot" mode.

These were on different projects, with different teams, so I probably have wildly different definitions of done, and wildly different expectations.

But now I might try Munder Difflin again...

gavmor··on You are a 1000x maker, and you can't think of how to make your stack 10x better?
> the exact stack you've been working on that whole time happens to be the perfect stack

Yes, because it was really only ever about communication with myself, and with teammates. There are a thousand different ways of characterizing the behavior of the system, and this is the one that makes sense to me in my language.

No, because I am always looking to expand my vocabulary and characterize behavior in new terms.

gavmor··on Show HN: Foremerge – Catch intent conflicts between parallel coding agents
Up to ~25, and they're not exactly "children", but I do have a coordinator agent that can selectively intrude on their sessions. I use `aoe` to spawn and communicate between worktree-isolated sessions:
