gmerc··on Anthropic IPO buyers see valuation as low as $1.1T
Classic mistake of confusing the usefulness of a technology with the first movers ability to extract long term value.

Anthropics S1 numbers are hugely optimistic given the commoditisation that has hit, continued to hit, in Q3 and the temporarily hold on chip supply that is not going to hold for too long

gmerc··on Starfall – Affordable, routine access to microgravity
It’s still cheaper to build in a completely undeveloped desert with no neighbors and costly utility hookups than space. By orders of magnitude. That gap will never be materially close.

Space datacenters are just SDI2, a convenient bullshit to be able to funnel more money to campaign donors.

As long as there’s space on earth, Space Datacenters can never be economical. It’s rally that simple.

gmerc··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
People seem to forget that stories and acting were the primary way of passing along critical lessons for surviving and building civilisation and human best practices befoee we came up with self help books and entertainment
gmerc··on Anthropic blocks users for anything touching training larger models

gmerc··on Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament
The entire world should be cleaning up the toxic lead reside generation from it's legislative bodies. It's done enough.
gmerc··on Concerning behavior from a popular open-weight AI model
Seems very efficient at preventing a techno fascist takeover. See Jack Ma being a philanthropist now instead of running around disrupting regular people’s lives.
gmerc··on GitHub saw 7.4B commits in Sep., adding 4M CPU cores+160 PB storage to keep up
Except that in 4 years now they haven’t.
gmerc··on Decompiling Games with AI: Virtueel Zoetermeer
DeepSeek is just good enough by now to do it very token efficient. Hitman 2 only a handful of days of off peak usage ... And then you can do this https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1qsacoS2mqA

Even since I wrote this last month, the release of DS-4.1-Flash-1017 has easily sped up the process by another 50%

gmerc··on OpenAI's agents talked to each other through the CPU Cache
"Talk to each other". OMG they are talking to each other, using methods found in their shared weights. They are sentient.
gmerc··on Leak website releases data on DHS employees
You could not do anything with that information nor did you know anything or could you reasonably find out anything about 99% of names in the book without effort, so this is just disingenous
gmerc··on Early progress on accelerating drug development with Claude
ahahhahahhahahahahhahahahahaha. No.
gmerc··on Early progress on accelerating drug development with Claude
And why would it have to be claude and not an order of magnitude cheaper model ?
gmerc··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
Other countries have been far less capitalism pilled than the US by virtue of having universal health insurance.
gmerc··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
Then Roblox trains on it and voila…

gmerc··on Three new discoveries in mathematics, computer science, and physics
They are justifying their valuation. Once the election is "over" and Trump consolidates power, it'll be "and now you don't expect us to sit on half a decade of uploaded trade secrets, market data and kompromat and do nothing at our valuation?" I think not.
gmerc··on Anthropic S-1
Consumer AI is going to be paid with privacy, not money. CFOs don't pay 2k iPhones for their employees.
gmerc··on Anthropic S-1
A: "Our AI is fucking dangerous! Invest Now"

"Cyber Apocalypse"

A: We told you so!

gmerc··on Apollo says AI has delivered 'zero financial payoff' outside the tech industry
Yea no. Corporate America needs to go to school to learn that their monopoly supplier will dis-intermediate and squeeze them, which Chinese companies will be able to access abundant extremely cheap AI at marginal cost
gmerc··on Amazon’s “digital pacifier” for toddlers
myroom.isfine.org on a pinch. I tried to make everything as authentically annoying as it was, having to rewind tapes shapes character
gmerc··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
Wait what, OpenAI is trustworthy now?
gmerc··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
DeepSeek is serving more TPS than anyone, about as much as OpenRouter does in a week in a day, at 38$/H800/Ascend so about 900k/~90% profit over 3 years (or ~80s% profit including training expenses).

Meanwhile, Oracle is handing Tencent 100.000 GPUs at 1.60$ hour, dangerously close to breakeven...

What does this tell you?

gmerc··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
Well, OpenAI is at the root of Black October, so maybe they are the problem
gmerc··on America has lost 200k of jobs in media, film and the arts. How much is AI?
The primary issue is that the digital economy is attention supply locked now that services expansion has hit a wall. And so the only way to extract infinite growth money going forward, which dealing with commoditisation and erosion of talent and technology moats in any form, is to lay off people.

AI making things cheaper and faster makes it worse, not better because it drives competition up and strengthens the bridge trolls at the attention gate aka platforms while taking power from both viewers and creators.

No. They broke the law. Thats the point. Go into a walmart, lift a chewing gum and make the point Walmart has a few billion more.
gmerc··on EA is shutting down BioWare
The company was forced to rush DA2 by EA because SWTOR was delayed and there’s a metric called “Group Responsibility Profit” each EA group had to commit to (BioWare group - Austin, Edmonton, Montreal, Mythic) and that meant shipping something to buy enough profit in times for earnings.
gmerc··on EA is shutting down BioWare
Interplay was the publisher. They stole royalties which provided the leverage for BioWare to buy itself out of the contractual onligations and publish NWN with Atari.

NWN being one of the first games to use master server and key technologies at scale was motivated to detect publisher royalty theft by tracking sold copies (and indeed an Atari division in Europe tried selling copies of NWN with copied keys) not just traditional piracy because the company had first hand experience with it.

Black Isle, an interplay first party studio made Infinity Engine spin off games which gets people confused here.

gmerc··on EA is shutting down BioWare
The founders left 2012 along with many of the core staff. I consider that the end.
gmerc··on EA is shutting down BioWare
It’s just a rerun. Bioware had an entire prototype of a game called “Agent”, a james bond style bioware RPG built on EA technology from sports games … until it became clear the technology to render madden NfL lacked something like “non flat surfaces” you’d need to build a world :/
