Founder: Permanent.Company https://permanent.company/ https://permanent.cloud/ @PermanentCPU

Permanent.Cloud is the personal cloud platform. We're building out https://Permanent.Cloud/Apps to be the best place to discover and collaborate on free cloud web apps and the open source projects behind them.

Now, you can also "Install" all of them, making Permanent.Cloud the easiest place for team leads to quickly spin up a WordPress blog, Discourse forum, Mattermost team chat, GitLab, JIRA, Cloud Bitcoin miner, etc. (any Docker container) with the click of a button.

We bill a fair fee each month based on usage, which you can easily put a cap on.

Buzzwords: TypeScript, koa, PostgreSQL, universal React, Kubernetes, AWS, Terraform

Looking to grow team and sustainability.

Also interested in what open source apps you and your startup are loving these days. e.g. GitLab w/ CI and Auto Devops is really making my life easy. Jenkins is always a winner too. What open source tools are you using every day? Which tools and apps should be in the 'starter pack' that every team can install on day one with one click?

gobengo··on Tell HN: Cloudflare verification is breaking the internet
I want the internet to be free/open to all as much as anyone. But specific websites aren’t the internet work itself. You aren’t entitled to them. many websites, most startup websites, are maintained by individuals or small businesses which aren’t inherently profitable. They can’t afford to deal with spambots, ad click through fraud, etc. It’s reasonable for them to deny-by-default and only spend time (money) dealing with user-agents that can pass this proof-of-personhood test (until there are better zip proof of personhoods, a huge opportunity atm)
gobengo··on U.S. regulator set to take over First Republic
from wikipedia “Barrack recommended that Trump hire Paul Manafort as his campaign manager. Barrack first met Manafort in the 1970s when they were both working for Saudis and living in Beirut. In 2007, Barrack had loaned Manafort $1.5 million to refinance a home in the Hamptons.”

some folks wish they were too big to fail but aren’t. they’re just small big failures

gobengo··on U.S. regulator set to take over First Republic
Anyone else notice how First Republic bank was bought a few years ago by Colony Capital co-managed by Thomas Barrack, who was a Senior Advisor to the Trump Campaign before being found guilty of acting as an unregistered foreign agent for UAE? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Barrack

Probably nothing.

gobengo··on Universal Speech Model
yes "They've only ever done one thing well, from a business perspective - create a world class search algo, put it behind a minimalistic web page, and pay for it with ads. And they didn't even come up with that business model: they just did what the competition did, but made the idealistic-nerd version of it."

gobengo··on We chose NanoIDs for PlanetScale’s API
NanoIDs are shorter than UUIDs because they have a bigger alphabet. That's probably why.

It's not very important for putting IDs in URL paths. But it can matter when using them in DNS subdomains because often there are surprisingly short max character lengths for domain names in e.g. LetsEncrypt SSL certs (iirc 63 characters)

gobengo··on Quantum Algorithm Implementations for Beginners
> Can these computers actually do something better than their classical counterparts, right now?

The answer is yes. Sometimes this is referred to as 'quantum supremacy' and some researchers at Google declared it in 2019.

SGX is just some document that a Google employee authored and didn't build consensus enough to standardize (e.g. Firefox/Safari don't support it). It's now an expired ietf draft that appears superceded by a different thing. It's also newer than nearly all the technologies used by OP link.

Let me know if you would be interested in developing a bit more to this nyxt browser feature to support persisting these extensions via the W3C Web Annotation protocol - https://www.w3.org/TR/annotation-protocol/

I've been wanting to write an implementation of an annotation server, and it'd be cool to immediately interoperate with nyxt browser. Then I'd work on the same server supporting most other browsers (e.g. Firefox) via WebExtension API building on my old https://github.com/gobengo/web-annotation-extension
