gotts··on How to run phones while being struck by suicide drones
To limited extend by Ukrainian army, more like a fallback method if something happens to Startlink. Mesh networks are getting used more and more by Russian army for coordinating drone attacks and surveillance - they use Chinese modems e.g. 70M-6Ghz/Uper C-X-Ku).

> you never really use a lot of this stuff in most run of the mill jobs. So of course you forget it, then have to study again pre interview.

I'm wondering how software devs explain this to themselves. What they train for vs what they actually do at their jobs differ more and more with time. And this constant cycle of forgetting and re-learning sounds like a nightmare. Perhaps people burn out not because of their jobs but the system they ended up in.

gotts··on MCP Specification – version 2025-06-18 changes
Very glad to see MCP Specification rapid improvement. With each new release I notice something that I was missing in my MCP integrations.

Obfuscation of what?
gotts··on Fiber optic drones are changing combat operations
tracing the drone operators just by a single optical fiber might be difficult but tracing their logistic is not.
gotts··on Fiber optic drones are changing combat operations
> Can another drone grab the fiber and walk back to your base?

Can not grab, it will get caught by branch trees and debris. The launch site is not where operators are located, most often it is well hidden, somewhat protected and hundreds of meters away.

> Can you use the fiber to a master drone which acts as a repeater/controller for normal RF drones?

Battery is the bottleneck, master drone has to stay long enough in the air for all drone to hit their targets.

> How much power can these types of fiber optic cable carry?

can't use it that way.

gotts··on US Ends Support For Ukrainian F-16s
80+ countries to USA: "we want our money back, money spent on your war that shouldn't had happened in the first place"
gotts··on US Ends Support For Ukrainian F-16s
These systems are much more advanced than how you perceive them.
gotts··on Alexa+
If they have a decent API I might consider buying it. Unfortunately it's not yet yet released in my region.

gotts··on The Swedish cabin on the frontline of a possible hybrid war
It doesn't matter whether it can resist dragging or not, if they could blow up large concrete reinforced NS pipeline.. a tiny optical cable is much easier to destroy.
gotts··on The Swedish cabin on the frontline of a possible hybrid war
I don't know about Finland but I read about Ukraine partnered with AWS in 2022 to move all of its digital infrastructure(government and banks) abroad and it worked surprisingly well.
gotts··on Ask HN: Programmers who don't use autocomplete/LSP, how do you do it?
I don't know whether there is Copilot module for Emacs, sorry. I'm more of a fan of gptel approach https://github.com/karthink/gptel with explicit context and instructions.
gotts··on Ask HN: Programmers who don't use autocomplete/LSP, how do you do it?
> I work almost exclusively in Emacs without the modern LSP-based tools

I'm wondering how many people in the comments would misinterpret it as "Emacs is outdated"/"Emacs does not have modern LSP-based tools"

gotts··on CADing and 3D printing like a software engineer
how big are your assemblies? I had some issues on large assemblies but after Manifold rendering release it became much much faster.
gotts··on CADing and 3D printing like a software engineer
functional programming is such an (semantically) overloaded term, it means completely different things to different people. Each time I read it in a blog post/tweet it makes comprehension slightly more difficult.

gotts··on Openpilot – Operating system for robotics
I suspect Openpilot sends packages to CAN bus to do steering but what makes the physical wheel rotates? I'm confused. Or when a human makes a correction to auto steering, perhaps there could be some kind of full duplex synchronization mechanism

gotts··on Husband and wife outed as GRU spies aiding bombings and poisonings across Europe
seizing the domain would give them nothing. Insider has a well established brand, they can easily reopen it in any other domain. Also getting some private information during the registration process might be helpful for the state.
gotts··on ResearchAgent: Iterative Research Idea Generation Using LLMs
Can you list some examples where free-associations from LLM were useful to you?
gotts··on My favourite Git commit (2019)
I agree with you that searching across commit messages happens rather rarely so return on great commit messages might be questionable

where great commit messages like the one in the blog post make perfect sense are pull requests. If the commit message explains the whole thought process that the author had while working on it, it saves so much time on pull request review.

gotts··on Ask HN: What happened to hackerspaces?
City funded(subsidized?) maker spaces is such a great idea
gotts··on NY bill would require a criminal history check for the purchase of a 3D printer
