gregorvand··on Elevators
Amazing article and demos thank you. I’ve also been fascinated by what algorithms are driving elevators.

As someone often using destination dispatch, I am inclined to think after the elevator arrives, you get to the destination more quickly than RSR or LOOK because it’s optimised everyone to the same floor (less stopping)

So it may be a case of more waiting in the lobby but less in a claustrophobic box, which I’ll happily take

gregorvand··on Building from zero after addiction, prison, and a felony
thanks for sharing, Gavin. I'm sure this alone will help open doors for many others.
gregorvand··on Majority of UK power in the last week was wind
ok fair enough. i dont live in the uk, and when i'm there, I am in a 100% elec house. I forget the dependency of households on a direct gas connection.
gregorvand··on Majority of UK power in the last week was wind
This is a repeat url, but ever more helpful to remind us UK does not 'depend' on natural gas, albeit wholesale prices are apparently still set by the price of it

gregorvand··on The Law of Leaky Abstractions
thanks, usually the submit catches same URLs, not so this time, but hey I think this an evergreen dev article
gregorvand··on Postman which I thought worked locally on my computer, is down
+ 1. I just came across it a few months ago after getting fed up with Postman's unintuitive ever-changing UI, etc. So far so good. Easy to store bruno files in a repo to have a nice easy place to go to get test calls
gregorvand··on The email they shouldn't have read
Definitely. I've watched a company move its entire health care plan to a startup, buddy of the CEO, to help juice said startup's customer base for investors. When the company were invited to a call to learn how their health plans had changed compared to the old provider (but after the contract was signed) - the startup 'would need more time to figure that out' .. you can imagine the deafening silence on that well-attended zoom call.
gregorvand··on A few things to know before stealing my 914 (2022)
Very fun. I have a similar check list for thieves for my '75 land rover series 3. I tried to have a friend 'steal' it out of my garage once - it didn't go very well.
gregorvand··on Who owns Express VPN, Nord, Surfshark? VPN relationships explained (2024)

Handy that while connected via ExpressVPN, this is blocked

Trust suggestion: make it easier to find photos of the founders, than the investors.

And you!
gregorvand··on TigerBeetle is a most interesting database
We did an episode with Joran on SEDaily which addresses some of the points raised in the discussions

gregorvand··on Sora 2
I agree that is probably part of the direction.

The other is possibly there’s no point in a thousand users all turning up to a blank prompt box and using a lot of resources to generate the same thing, or things they are not impressed by. A lot of users will ‘get what they came for’ initially just by seeing a bunch of good examples. Discussions around them will help them produce better outputs faster. Etc

gregorvand··on Helium Browser
Pass, sure, but vs what currently?

Helium does not have to be the destination. But it is a good step when Chromium is the standard (try using Safari and quickly websites seem uncharacteristically janky)

gregorvand··on (how to fix) Multiple instances of Chrome in Mac OS 15 local network access
If you ever clicked 'deny' to the request, you will find multiple instances in privacy and settings. After a while, you may not be able to access local locations like a chromecast. Here's how to fix it (T3chN3ck comment)
gregorvand··on Emailing a one-time code is worse than passwords
Services love it because it hands off the risk and responsibility to… Google/Gmail in most personal cases. This was why the pattern was adopted so quickly.
gregorvand··on Fast
Superhuman achieved their sub-something speed maybe (has anyone measured it except them? Genuinely, post a link, appreciated)

However the capital required will probably never happen again in relation to the return for any investor involved in that product.

Props to them for pushing the envelope, but they did it in the zero interest era and its a shame this is never highlighted by them. And now the outcome is pretty clear in terms of where the company has ended up.

gregorvand··on Electric cars produce far less brake dust pollution than combustion-engine cars
Does this apply to fixies then as well? I might reignite my use of one in a city vs traditional bike if so ...!
gregorvand··on Show HN: I built this to talk Danish to my girlfriend – works with any language
Interesting idea. Also got errors.

That withstanding, surely having the user select what their target language is, would help with processing and accuracy? It's a one time lift for the user, and would ensure I'm definitely getting back my target language, not a dialect or totally different (norwegian/swedish come to mind immediately)

gregorvand··on Grammarly acquires Superhuman
Maybe someone else can figure this one out better than me - it is interesting Grammarly raised $1bn of debt, basically. And now they're using that cash to buy revenue-generating companies, I assume at a knock-down price as others have speculated. I assume this is one big strategic play on both sides where each need the other for various reasons.
