gregoryl··on Getting debug access on a Brother printer over Telnet
I was digging around an epson receipt printers firmware recently; got as far as discovering http endpoints (hardcoded auth) to remotely enable ssh (but not login), and some other diagnostic access. They seem fairly well put together.
gregoryl··on Xbox wants you to pay 24 to 40 cents per hour to stream games you bought
500 hours; sorry, we increased the price after streaming became the only option.
gregoryl··on Sorry, I'm in a meeting
I often call them by their title, "Staff Engineer" ;)
gregoryl··on ADHD as a circadian rhythm disorder: evidence and implications for chronotherapy (2025)
Roughly, zero. Stimulants are not a fun dependency, come with a bucket list of side effects and downsides, and only mitigate one aspect of ADHD.
gregoryl··on In an $80 motel room, a discovery to shed light on the origins of life
and/or how many robots they are willing to loose in my shed.
gregoryl··on ReBarUEFI: Resizable BAR for almost any UEFI system
They link https://github.com/terminatorul/NvStrapsReBar in the repo which does what you want for 2000 series cards. Start there, burn some credits.
gregoryl··on ReBarUEFI: Resizable BAR for almost any UEFI system
Tempted to see if this will work on the work dell laptop, which hardware supports rebar, but Dell just can't be assed to enable it - use an external ARC GPU to properly support 3 screens (again, Dells awful drivers / firmware - the same hardware supports 3 screens just fine).
gregoryl··on US criticises Australia's proposed algorithm opt-out laws as 'censorship'
We elected a central-left government, and somehow ended up with center right. Its deeply frustrating.
gregoryl··on Show HN: Graphify C# – Compiler-accurate Find Usages for coding agents
I'm hoping Rider get some support for switching between worktrees efficiently - until then, it becomes a tool only the primary / interactive agent sessions can access.
gregoryl··on Apple Watch Series 12
Better running metrics. Maps. On-device routing. Longer battery life.
gregoryl··on Don't be a meat proxy
As with most things LLM, you can generally get what you want by asking for it (maybe not efficiently, but so it goes). "Once you have a answer, please summarize, and ask an agent to convert it to plain English" often helps.
gregoryl··on AI doesn't generate working products, that's still your job
Its a bit unkind to talk like this - the obvious and equally unproductive response is to question if you are really as good as you think you are. Are those junior developers not making a mess, or do you lack the insight to see it?
gregoryl··on Lobste.rs is now running on SQLite
Those SRE people live on excitement, its basically a gift ;)
gregoryl··on Command and Conquer Generals natively ported to macOS, iPhone, iPad using Fable
Its hard for native speakers. Information density makes for rough reading.
gregoryl··on Please stop the AI confidence theater
The bullshit will continue until the grifters move on to something else. If you can figure out what that is, you'll make some serious bank!
gregoryl··on AMD Strix Halo RDMA Cluster Setup Guide
Indeed, here: https://github.com/kyuz0/amd-strix-halo-vllm-toolboxes/blob/...
gregoryl··on Ending respiratory infections
People who are voluntary philanthropists tend not to amass fortunes.
gregoryl··on Bun support is now limited and deprecated
Surely that reinforces the argument - there are now a million LOC in a different language, needing stunning amounts of work to validate it actually functions? Writing the code has never been the bottleneck.
gregoryl··on Apple unveils new accessibility features
Ublock origin blocks the ads entirely on Firefox.
gregoryl··on I believe there are entire companies right now under AI psychosis
Its the same people. They didn't just up and vanish, they just moved over to AI!
gregoryl··on I believe there are entire companies right now under AI psychosis
I'm not aware of a limit in my current role. There is, however, a leaderboard.
gregoryl··on Scorched Earth 2000 – Web
I used a tool called ArtMoney; apparently still actively developed and sold from an .ru domain.
gregoryl··on Over 97% of the 'Linux' Foundation's Budget Goes Not to Linux
That seems to be correct. You can see the hours disclosure here: https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/460...
gregoryl··on Meta Shuts Down End-to-End Encryption for Instagram Messaging
*literacy is terribly low. Everyone using this site is blissfully inside a bubble of people who can at least read and write at a high school level.
gregoryl··on Google broke reCAPTCHA for de-googled Android users
I agree, wholeheartedly - lets get a list of the google engineers who worked on this. What do you propose we do with it?
gregoryl··on Poland is now among the 20 largest economies
Probably not hellbanned, maybe spam filters gone wrong. I vouched them back into the land of the living :)
gregoryl··on Google Chrome silently installs a 4 GB AI model on your device without consent
I doubt many people here download any ads in a day.
gregoryl··on Israel escalates attacks on medics in Lebanon with deadly 'quadruple tap'
The world? There is one country supplying the weapons and funding.
gregoryl··on GitHub Stacked PRs
If I'm following correctly, the conflicts arise from other commits made to main already - you've implicitly caught branch A up to main, and now you need catch branch B up to main, for a clean merge.

I don't see how there is any other way to achieve this cleanly, it's not a git thing, it's a logic thing right?

gregoryl··on Local Stack Archived their GitHub repo and requires an account to run
We should return to the HN guidelines, and read it as charitably as possible.

I'm interpreting it as closer to pity, rather than genuine criticism =)
