harrouet··on Hackers hit French national blood bank
Funny to find St Petersburg trolls even on HN, lol. Can't you create more value than this, or all you know is destruciton?
harrouet··on Hackers hit French national blood bank
Hard to imagine something more unethical than that.
harrouet··on Intel stock collapse worsens as $3.5T chip rout spreads
Intel is particular: they managed to keep appearing to investor as a CPU leader,

BUT:

- they are losing the server to ARM (also thanks to Apple because now many devs use ARM as well)

- AMD is strong on the PC, while Apple (15% market share) is ARM

- They failed to make a dent in the GPU market

So, Intel has got no more area of leadership. No more in manufacturing, no more in chip design. They are riding the inertia wave but will lose it eventually. That's what happens when you let financial people milk the cow. They sure got nice bonuses.

Farewell...

harrouet··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
Simple answer that no one seems to suggest:

--> Buy a TV in Europe.

Regulation blah blah slowing down innovation also does that: it protects your privacy.

So, get the TV of your choice but European version.

harrouet··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
Wait, it is decentralized but can be frozen ?

No. You just can't use these platforms. But a knowledgeable hacker will be able to add a transaction tot he blockchain.

harrouet··on If IPv4 were land
You can do this in IPv6
harrouet··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Totally agreed.

With the difference that Apple has got a near monopoly on tablets.

I don't like touch screens, they are a counter-pattern for a laptop. Yet I don't mind people liking it and using it. But I am in fear that the UI will get impacted also for non-users.

harrouet··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
only the M1 Max can't do nested virtualization (needs M3+)
harrouet··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
Exactly on the same boat: I don't see a big improvement until I can run a decent LLM on my machine. But I'll wait for it to reach the $2500 price tag.

Until then, then M1 Pro will be fine for my usage, which is already more advanced than most.

My ideal scenario:

- 2027 the AI bubble bursts

- 2028 new memory factories reach the production stage and fail to meet demand, so we have a glut of memory and rock-bottom prices.

harrouet··on Ask HN: If the models are so good, why doesn't OpenAI just start 100 companies?
Because they already employ thousands of programmers that the AI cannot replace. Don't believe the marketing hype about AGI, we are extremely far from it.
harrouet··on Why my Asus laptop kept rebooting after sleep and how to fix it
There is a setting on Macs to allow the laptop to wake-up sporadically to update opened apps during sleep. You can totally disable that.
harrouet··on Why my Asus laptop kept rebooting after sleep and how to fix it
Not only ASUS: the brand-new Lenovo Thinkbook that my IT department got me is having a similar issue: after sleep, no more keyboard. Even an external one fails to generate keystrokes. You are left with the virtual keyboard or Teamviewer.

As a Mac user, I thought this could not exist. I mean, it is 2026 and a PC still does not have a decent collection of keyboard drivers.

harrouet··on C++ futures part 1: The mental model
Why not use std::variant instead of an enum and a collection of ifs ?
harrouet··on Starcraft: Ashfall
@ggnore7452 this is your boss.

Have you used the company's tokens to do this?

Where is the customer's software feature we promised?

(just kidding of course. Thx for doing this and thx to whomever paid for the tokens)

harrouet··on New Withings Users Must Pay $99/Year for Apple Health Syncing
Likewise, Apple does not give Withings access to Apple Health's data, even with user permission.

So, I can understand why Withings does not want to be the one doing the hard work of data collection, while Apple is preparing its own subscription for Health services.

harrouet··on Who Is Planting Backdoors in Ledger Crypto Wallets?
But you at least had to provide an email and a means of payment.
harrouet··on Who Is Planting Backdoors in Ledger Crypto Wallets?
The thing with eSIMs is that they are bound to an operator, which is supposed to keep record of who is using them. Law enforcement authorities should be able to get to the guys doing this...

... unless they are tied to a government.

harrouet··on Apple HomeView
Wait until you see the price of the accessories...

The entry ticket is cheap, then you'll probably pay to extend your system.

harrouet··on Apple HomeView
HomeView does two things:

- a Home Hub to connect and drive the accessories and Airplay devices in your house

- a UI to support the user experience

I believe that e.g. an AppleTV is already a Home Hub, and the Home app on your iPhone / iPad gives you control over it.

So the value is in the integration and the multi-user support.

harrouet··on AI is a tool and using it well takes skill
What I see is that we are in the phase where managers are buying the marketing hype and think that people can be replaced. I guess people believe what they want to believe.

I anticipate a later wave a re-hiring people who actually know how to run a business / tech center / call center... whatever the AI replaced.

The hard work will not be to replace the people, but to change the organizations so that the productivity of AI can be harvested by the people.

harrouet··on Hackers activate automatic defrosting in supermarket fridges across Europe
I was talking to these guys when the faulty fridges got installed (early 2000's).

The IT director was usually a consultant with no say at the executive committee, let alone the board. Reporting to the "Secretary General", along with HR.

It took them a LOT of time to realize that digital was strategic.

harrouet··on Hackers activate automatic defrosting in supermarket fridges across Europe
I totally understand monitoring the fridges remotely, i.e. making sure the retailer is careful about keeping frozen food... frozen.

Or detect a door that would not close anymore.

But why, oh why, did they allow someone to change the settings remotely? Wouldn't it work to just tell the local operator to adjust a physical knob when necessary?

harrouet··on Show HN: Let your AI agents paint big arrows, boxes and text on your screen
There is no limit to burning tokens :)
harrouet··on Man discovers his parents' coffee machine used 1TB of data in 10 days
It started when people laughed at the EU's efforts for privacy, such as the cookie regulation or GDPR.

The first thing that Meta did after Brexit was moving its UK's user data to the US.

harrouet··on Living off-grid: Hundred Rabbits
Looking forward to a world where humans connect back in real life and leave the Internet to the AI overlords, so that they can crunch the boring administrative tasks for us.
harrouet··on Direct retinal projection display for smart glasses using a meta-optic mirror
Now you can get the ghost effect directly to your retina.

oh, wait!

harrouet··on US tells France and Germany to release diesel stocks or face US export ban
History will remember this administration as a traitor to Europe and its values. Right when the US needs allies.
harrouet··on Apple's smart home camera reportedly won't record video
You obviously don't have teenagers at home :)
harrouet··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
This how empires collapse:

- To maintain fellowship, the empire spreads money to buy influence

- eventually this starts to cost too much, so the empire reduces spending

- wars ensue and independent voices emerge

- unable to establish order, the empire loses its influence and collapses

You can see this patterns as the US is overspending (high debt / trade deficit) while reducing its diplomatic influence on international programs. Not sure how they can save the USD value over time.
