hbarka··on Show HN: HackerBooks – HackerTube, but for books mentioned on HN
I assume that like Karpathy you used Claude Code Desktop. The harness seems to be more capable than VS Code or terminal. Could you have done it with TUI alone?
hbarka··on HackerTube: YouTube built from videos recommended by HN
No, not that. Increasingly, the Claude Desktop app (and desktop harnesses) seems to be the favored environment over terminal, VS Code, and the like.

It’s quite a feat, what Karpathy built. I know, I know, Claude did it but Karpathy envisioned and guided it. And he did it declaratively, not imperatively.

> A little bit more on my process. I use Claude Code (desktop app for Mac). I use Opus 5.5 on Medium effort as my default. I don't actually do anything resembling traditional engineering anymore (read/write code, run commands in a terminal, or etc.), I only talk to Claude and have it do everything.

This is the lede, y’all.

hbarka··on US agency approves Amazon Leo’s $11.5B acquisition of Globalstar
Globalstar flies highest, with orbits at ~1400 km. Starlink is at ~340-550 km. Per satellite, a higher altitude sees a larger portion and provides greater angular visibility of the Earth's surface at any one time. Globalstar is suited for low-power devices, emergency sat messaging, and IoT, not broadband speed. One reason they made a good fit with the iPhone. Also the valuable spectrum.
hbarka··on US agency approves Amazon Leo’s $11.5B acquisition of Globalstar
Globalstar is a study in corporate survival. It lives on while its 90’s cohort Iridium didn’t make it.

Consider the journey:

2002: Bankruptcy.

2007: Satellite amplifier failures threatened its voice service.

2010–2013: A replacement constellation helped restore capacity.

2022: Apple's iPhone Emergency SOS gave Globalstar a major new purpose.

2024: Apple committed approximately $1.5 billion in investment and infrastructure funding.

Now: This acquisition by Amazon would bring Globalstar's satellite assets and spectrum into Amazon's competition with Starlink, while preserving satellite services for Apple devices.

hbarka··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
Someone needs to ask Musk how much the Roadster car shell weighed during the flying demo. Then ask for an estimate when they will do a genuine demo with a 2000lb battery.

hbarka··on Can we replace a $150k Looker with a bucket of HTML files?
Add Tableau to this list. Claude natural language produces better visualizations. The constant which will survive traditional BI is the data warehouse not the presentation layer.
hbarka··on The foolishness of "natural language programming" (1978)
There’s em dashes in that 1978 article.

hbarka··on Six clones of Jev in 2 days
> salty that he did not get recognition; claims RLCD without justification

This salty meta is definitely written by a human.

hbarka··on Kev: Tiny Jev-like family of decision models built on top of Qwen3.5
If Jev is fundamentally trained using RLCD while you’re building on a Qwen model that was trained using RLHF, how can the resulting model be considered Jev-like?
hbarka··on I built non-autoregressive decision models with RL a year ago
Hear, hear! An em-dash is a great stylistic device for structuring sentences. It saddens me that the use of it now has become some sort of scarlet letter. I’m hoping the co-opting can be reversed.
hbarka··on We need to stop using Stored Procedures
This is an opinion where the author is obviously coming from an application developer’s bias. If you’re a data engineer you love the idea of stored procedures. A data engineer is often more comfortable putting logic closer to the data, especially for bulk transformations, set-based processing, ETL/ELT, data quality rules, and involving large volumes of data. Doing this in an application just to process them would be inefficient.
hbarka··on Show HN: CUA-S1 – A System One Model for Computer Use
I read the nod to Typesafe Jev. Are you implying use of RLCD or still RLHF?

Beautiful. Now this is how to work with an LLM, not castigate it.

Nice. Thanks!

Great, now I have to redo my scaffold harness. I guess this agent.md awareness is part of the system prompt?
hbarka··on Our brain evolved from two primitive nervous systems that merged: Study
Its a joke. You know they say ADHD types made great hunters thousands of years ago, because they can hyperfocus on that gazelle while constantly keeping their head on a swivel.

I’m not hearing about Jev’s obvious military application. You can only imagine how it is the best for “friend or foe?” decision-making.
hbarka··on Data collected by cars and sold to third parties
Today’s cars are safer because of the crumple zones. We romanticize the older cars but their rigidity also caused impact force to be absorbed by occupants.
hbarka··on iPhone Duo
I should have shared this YouTube short:

hbarka··on iPhone Duo
You have to understand 1:√2. It’s not merely folding in half. The test is the folded half has to be the same ratio as the parent. It’s same ratio all the way down.

“The mathematical brilliance of A*”

https://youtu.be/oQfzSt5bLVs

hbarka··on iPhone Duo
There’s a standard for paper sizes called the ISO 216 international standard, aka A-series paper sizes. You may be familiar with it outside of the American 8.5”x11” letter size. The simplicity, for example, where an A3 sheet is exactly twice the area of A4. One A3 sheet folded in half becomes two A4 sheets. This is intentional: when you fold or divide an A-series sheet exactly in half, the resulting sheets have the same proportions as the prior. The aspect ratio is preserved across all A-series paper sizes.

The iPhone Duo is designed with this in mind. The aspect ratio any way you view it, folded or open, is preserved. Apple design knows a thing or two.
