hellisothers··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
This is/was absolutely a thing and I saw it happen to others and switched to y’all, I got called out for using “dude” and come on dude, dude is extremely gender neutral in this sense.
hellisothers··on Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone
Then maybe you’re onto something here: the hardware is subsidized. Point being that if you want the cheaper, subsidized device, you have to make some compromises.
hellisothers··on Why is every rationalist blog post way too long?
Or a recipe at the end because SEO. Really long articles are a negative signal for me unless I know the author to be good.
hellisothers··on Using AI for Just 10 Minutes Erodes Your Ability to Persist at Hard Things
Maybe, but even if that were the case nobody is getting a human expert in everything in their pocket for freeish.
hellisothers··on Programming Tutorials Are Dead
What was the motivation?
hellisothers··on China's Regulators Take Aim at "AI Boyfriends"
This seems like an excuse/conspiracy theory. Hot people could always find hot people: go to where hot people hang out (clubs, hipster bars, art galleries, yoga, etc). What has definitely increased is access to people complaining about hot people not dating them.
hellisothers··on US to ban Canadian dairy, alcohol, motor vehicle imports on September 29
I got a 2yr supply just in case…
hellisothers··on Carmakers Have a New Idea to Boost EV Range: Add a Gas Engine
Also I’d separate HEV and PHEV. I agree a HEV is kinda of meh but PHEVs are, at least for me and getting around the city, the best of both worlds.
hellisothers··on A Selection of Los Alamos Rolodex Business Cards
Love the logos, colors, and at the same time simplicity. These are so much more memorable than what you see today which I find to be bland or over the top “grafix”.
hellisothers··on A formal degree and algorithmic problem-solving is the answer. Always has been
I think your interviewing experience is valid because tech interviews have been designed to filter out people without DS&A experience which a CS degree will give you a big advantage at. Day to day job performance (for the most part, in most roles) will have nothing to do with DS&A though. If you know when to use an array vs a dictionary then you’re good for 99.99% of actual software development day to day tasks.
hellisothers··on A formal degree and algorithmic problem-solving is the answer. Always has been
Classic gatekeeping argument insisting a CS degree is necessary to write good software. I don’t have one and have 20+ year successful career with accolades, know many others in the same boat. Obviously there are CS degree people who were also successful, and the flip side comes for both camps, I’ve worked with absolutely awful engineers with or without a CS degree.

It is a signal, not the signal.

hellisothers··on Japan's Gen X workers are struggling
Can you explain?
hellisothers··on An Engineer's Old Cooking Trick Is Going Viral, Divides the Internet
I messed up a recent DIY construction project because I didn’t read it all the way to the end first. My chef wife comes in with “you always read the recipe to the end before starting”…
hellisothers··on People are worried about America's solvency
Just finished “Super Sad Love-story” and worrying about this hits hard :grimace:
hellisothers··on [dead]
Is the Taliban a recognized government trying to maintain legitimacy on the international stage that the US pays billions to?
hellisothers··on Claude users are mad that Anthropic's new watermarks will catch them using it
Can’t you just paste the copy into an editor that doesn’t support weird characters like EMacs or BBEdit?
hellisothers··on I built a jellyfish laboratory in my backyard [video]
Lots of Children of Ruin (Tchaikovsky) vibes here.
hellisothers··on Switching to electric stoves can dramatically cut indoor air pollution (2025)
Let’s assume we both have nice ranges.

- I can temper on my 7k BTU burner

- I can boil water quick AF on my 18k BTU burner

- setting pan temp isn’t a thing, there are no recipes that call for a pan temp. Oil temp? Sure and that is why you have a thermometer, very solved problem. For browning etc you do it by time and feel, even if you could set a pan temp you wouldn’t just leave your meat on it for some temp x time amount.

hellisothers··on Switching to electric stoves can dramatically cut indoor air pollution (2025)
Maybe it’s because my wife is literally a chef but you’ll have to pull her gas range/oven out of her dead hands. She’s worked with induction before for years, it is not the same league. For instance, you can’t tilt the pan.
hellisothers··on Switching to electric stoves can dramatically cut indoor air pollution (2025)
If you do the deep research on this there are many qualifiers to get the result they’re purporting. The main issue is you have to have little to no ventilation to make their numbers work. If you have a hood and or good indoor airflow to a window then this is all propaganda.
hellisothers··on “Code was never the hard part” is an insult to all programmers
Or put differently: code as a means to an end vs code as the end. You need both types, the ratio changes as things change, neither is The Way.
hellisothers··on How Americans View Capitalism, Socialism and Free Enterprise
But are either of these Capitalism? Sure they’re capitalist in the way the world works but the OP is touching on ideals and theory.
hellisothers··on EU rules on AI models become enforceable. What's going to change?
Maybe but it feels like 1 step forward and 2 steps back. It feels like in the end they’re (companies) still getting 99% of what they had before and the user experience of everything is much worse.
hellisothers··on For most US drivers, EVs offer emissions benefits and cost savings
This definitely happened, all my yard/lawn items (mower, chainsaws, hedgers, etc) are all battery. So much better.
hellisothers··on The Corporate Creep of Plex: Why it may be time to move to Jellyfin
Looks and feels like an Android app from 10 years ago and all this hides whatever setup and management went into getting this going. Plex Just Works, and is very easy on the eyes.
hellisothers··on Police removed prominent scientists from American Diabetes Association meeting
Why do you think universal healthcare will make it easier to get the drugs you need? I’d imagine the opposite with additional bureaucracy.
hellisothers··on Canada says bridge tolls won't be split with U.S. until $6.4B of debt is repaid
In the short term, in the long term everyone else loses confidence in the country to be a good actor.
hellisothers··on Are we offloading too much of our thinking to AI?
Focusing just on AI wrt our work (let’s say software engineering for now) and letting go the other items. I see a like when this comes up the story is if the AI is doing the arch/impl then what are you even doing anymore? That is honestly not where my value add is, many people can do those two things plenty well, it’s basically commoditized at this point (at a certain experience level). What I bring is all the soft skills and intuition to glue it together and ship and maintain it.

Let the impl go.

hellisothers··on Just Pay the Subscription
You can cancel immediately and still get that initial trial/month! I always do this, especially for apps i aspirationally purchase a subscription for a year for (fitness/language apps).
hellisothers··on Most rewrites serve the engineer, not the business
Is this news to anybody? Feels like I should just point AI and several “foundations of software engineering” and have it churn out blog posts for each chapter.
