helterskelter2··on A 28-Year-Old DOGE Operative Gutted USAID. HR Had No Record of Him Working There
If there's no record, was the executive really employing him?
helterskelter2··on Air Purifiers as White Noise Machines
Almost anywhere now in North America or Europe during the summer.
helterskelter2··on Time Nuts (2005)
Thank you! I've had the idea of aquiring an atomic clock in the back of my head for a while now and I'm glad to see there's a like-minded community out there. I'm not even sure what I'd do with it except measure time dilation effects.
helterskelter2··on This I Believe (1952)
> keep that which works, change only that which needs changing and be careful not to change it too much or too fast lest you destroy that which worked

This sounds great until you start arguing over what "works" means, who is making the distinction, and and where their interests are.

helterskelter2··on Is this the new cyber normal?
I can't help but wonder if we're going to see the OS and browser maintainers begin streamlining code and reducing complexity. Software these days almost seems like a fractal of insecurity, the only way to make the problem more tractable is to reduce attack surface.
helterskelter2··on Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier
> What dirt could they possibly have on him that would actually matter to the voters that voted for him last time?

Some segment will always deny any dirt that comes out but I think most would become fairly adverse to him if, say, conclusive evidence of child sexual abuse surfaced.

helterskelter2··on Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier
There are degrees to kompromat. He probably wasn't close friends with Epstein for instance.
helterskelter2··on Ukraine carries out aerial drone evacuation of a wounded soldier
It's possible that enough Republicans will be looking for a clean break with Trump and may be willing to get Vance in his place, especially with Trump's recent dealings with Russia and Ukraine. The MAGA voting base is looking less devoted with the recent economic developments as well and might not be so keen on his candidates in 2029. Also, if dems get the majority we may be seeing more Epstein revelations in the news.

But like I said, this is the very best case scenario. Most likely Trump will just be to busy handling an investigation and an adversarial Congress to do much but make noise on social media.

They probably will, but they won't get the votes to override a presidential veto (2/3 of both chambers). The very best case scenario is that Trump is impeached and Vance doesn't have any serious kompromat.
helterskelter2··on Maybe There Was an Egg Cartel After All
I'm also in the PNW. The egg thing seemed weird to me when the local organic eggs didn't budge at all. We had bird deaths in the wild from the flu as well, so I know it was out here.
helterskelter2··on US Rep Announces Congressional Legislation to Protect Video Game Ownership
Bob Dylan pulled some shenanigans like this. He "released" an album which only had like 100 copies, but in doing so he maintained copyright of all his old work (and let's be real that's all that anyone would ever listen to anyway).

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/jan/08/bob-dylan-box-...

I think Japan has an interesting model though for abandonware, at least when the copyright owner can't be tracked down: anyone can sell an old game, but a portion of the income goes into an escrow account in case the copyright holder is located.

helterskelter2··on Woman who rescued injured crow keeps getting 'thank-you gifts' from birds [video]
I knew somebody who had logged in Alaska and they swore that this one town had a huge crow who would hang out by the town's welcome sign and...welcome the visitors. Apparently crows who spend enough time around people will sometimes mimic human speech and this particular crow had been taught to welcome people in.
helterskelter2··on Casio F-91W using Statecharts
I don't believe that it should, but tbh I can't say for certain. My understanding is that you set the time using a high accuracy time source, reset it a month later, then a few months after that, etc and nanosec updates the crystal's drift compensation value which applies corrections to the time displayed, after accounting for the temperature and battery voltage. So it shouldn't be making too many writes, and as long as it isn't checking and correcting the drift too often (like every second or even every minute) it should be fairly minimal additional power draw. I'd be more concerned about excessive backlight usage, but again, this all just me speculating.

On the topic of battery usage though, SWP has a low energy mode, which only updates the face every minute. You can also adjust backlight intensity.

helterskelter2··on Casio F-91W using Statecharts
The backlight is integrated into the movement. SWP has a red, green and blue LED, depending on whatever suits your preference.

It's also compatible with the A158WA-1, which is basically an F91W, but with a steel case (the steel bracelet can be replaced with an 18mm leather strap if you prefer).

I haven't put the SWP in yet, so I can't comment on how good it is, but it looks very promising.

BTW, if you want the high accuracy feature, you have to change some settings and flash a new firmware with nanosec enabled.

helterskelter2··on Casio F-91W using Statecharts
This is funny, I just ordered a FOSS replacement movement for the F91W, which, with a few calibrations spread out over a few months, can achieve an accuracy of <15s/yr (it also has an accelerometer and a thermometer built in). I was planning on writing some astronomy and navigation apps for it

helterskelter2··on Someone on Torrent Sites Kept Fucking with My Sonarr
I've heard horror stories of recent generations not understanding files and directories, or even how to use a search engine.
helterskelter2··on Marshall Islands Stick Chart
If anyone is interested in this, they should read David Lewis' We, The Navigators, it covers the traditional navigation techniques practiced by Pacific Islanders. Stick charts are covered, but it covers pretty much everything the author possibly could have after sailing around the Pacific islands with navigators of various islands.

helterskelter2··on Things to know when you get cancer
I've had similar experiences. It's kind of terrifying, actually, you have to walk the line of being annoying enough to get what you want but not so annoying they completely ignore you.

One of the things I've learned is to apply the Socratic method, preferably in front of their colleagues if they try to brush you off. Also, if you've got scary symptoms, demand they write down what your symptoms are on your record and why they aren't concerned, then demand a copy of all relevant records (it's your property) -- this often gets them to reevaluate your risk in terms of their career.

Worst case scenario, you can make up medical history. I had a family member pass recently from colorectal cancer. They had symptoms but their PCP kept insisting they were too young. My family member suddenly "remembered" her aunt died of CRC when she was a kid. This got her referred to a gastroenterologist, and they found out she was stage 4...after her PCP delayed her diagnosis for like a year. She actually had grounds for a malpractice suit but who's got the energy or money for that when they're fighting stage 4 cancer?

Also, know your state's agency responsible for policing health insurance. This family member's insurance company routinely tried to deny life saving procedures, but a call to the right govt agency set them in line each time.

helterskelter2··on CFTC Staff Were Told to Retract Analysis of Suspicious Oil Trades
To be fair she was asked in an interview how she would differ from her predecessor and she totally choked. It was like she'd never even considered that was a question somebody might ask her. She just didn't have an answer.

If so, this is one of the funniest parts of Zhuangzhi.

helterskelter2··on Fingerprints are the new cookies
I've seen anti-fingerprinting plugins and browser configs, etc, but they all seem to make you more interesting for not being fingerprintable, or for turning off a lot of features used in fingerprinting.

Is there any reason a browser or plugin couldn't just spoof the data used in fingerprinting to random values? So it emits different values for each page or resource you load?

helterskelter2··on Whooping Cranes Learned to Migrate by Following Costumed Pilots
Wow I haven't seen this movie in...about 30 years. We had it on VHS when I was a kid. Time flies.
helterskelter2··on Whistle: Speech to Text in 16.9 MB
I've used FUDO keyboard for a long time, but I never tried using the voice input, so I'm testing it now. Let's see how well it transcribes everything.

helterskelter2··on Tell HN: I've been paying for a rural Tanzanian's education for 10 years
I'm not sure, tbh. Perhaps consider reaching out to some reputable news organization. Seems like something NPR might be interested in picking up. I believe they're fairly responsive to their contact forms as well.
helterskelter2··on Tell HN: I've been paying for a rural Tanzanian's education for 10 years
Hey this sounds really cool and is giving me Bram Moolenaar vibes. Please try to get some sort of trusted source to vouch for you though, I've been around long enough to see a lot of these charities -- especially involving children from poorer countries -- turn out to be scams.
helterskelter2··on OpenAI "rogue" agent activities found on Wikimedia projects
> distinguish between compromising a network and using public apis in a way that might be counter to their intent.

I believe weev got in legal trouble under the CFAA for this very thing with his 2010 AT&T escapade. AT&T had all that data sitting on a public server with no authentication necessary, just a SIM ID to get that customer's PII. Truthfully AT&T should have been hit with negligence...you don't secure a bank vault with a screen door, but we don't hold anyone accountable for other people's data in America.

helterskelter2··on Earth Tipped on Its Side During the Age of Dinosaurs–and Not Just Once
No I think the orientation of the earth changed relative to its axis. Earth is constantly changing and its density is not evenly distributed, so you see changes in its orientation with its axis. If we suddenly moved (just imagine) 10% of Earth's mass to a band forming a great circle from N45°E0° directly to its antipode at S45°E180°, Earth's axis would shift to make this its new equator.

This wiki page could be worded a little more clearly though, it sounds like the axis could have shifted by ~25°? Or Asia could have migrated due to the shift of the axis ~174 million years ago? 25° change in axis would be quite dramatic.

helterskelter2··on Nearly 200 people under observation after Irkutsk lab worker dies from plague
According to aquaintances in a few different industries where some of their competition is Russian: They basically work for vodka, then their equipment breaks down, they can't fix it and the customer has to call a western company. They apparently have no consistent maintenance or service protocol whatsoever, and in some rather safety critical areas.
