hex12648430··on The German front in rare color photos, 1914-1918
I would also recommend the documentary series Apocalypse: World War I which also contains colorized footage and dubbed sound effects.

hex12648430··on Iyashikei: Japan’s Genre of “Healing Games” (2018)
I'll add a few that I enjoy

Flying Witch - A witch goes to live in the countryside with her relatives as part of her training. Lovely world-building.

Girls' Last Tour - Two girls on a journey through a gigantic post-apocalyptic city. The setting is quite bleak but the story mostly focuses on how the main characters are finding joy in their world.

Aria - The daily lives of apprentice gondoliers in Neo-Venezia, a replica of Venice built on a terraformed Mars.

The manga and anime for all of these are available legally in English. Unfortunately you may have to jump through some hoops if you want to acquire their OSTs, which is a shame because they're all excellent.

Not only that but the first 10 minutes of the film were released during a special projection in France and Japan.
hex12648430··on Japanese anime studio Khara moving to Blender
>I wonder what kind of anime-focused features will come to the next version of Blender as a result.

Work is currently being done on the LANPR branch as part of the GSoC. This branch is meant to replace the Freestyle system which is currently used for line rendering. [0]

Otherwise we already have the "Shader to RGB" node which is extremely useful to create NPR shaders.

There's also an add-on which can be used to deform a mesh based on greasepencil strokes, I assume 2D animators would love this. [1]

If you're interested in blender NPR news I highly recommend following the BNPR Show on youtube. [2]

hex12648430··on Epic Games Supports Blender Foundation with $1.2M
The remove doubles operator is now called "Merge by Distance". You can find it in Mesh > Clean Up. That's actually the first thing I added to the new quick favorites menu which you can access with the q key.
hex12648430··on Japan's Hayabusa2 probe makes second touchdown on distant asteroid
I'm glad this mission seems to go way better than the previous one.
hex12648430··on Blender Is Free Software
They had a presentation at the blender conference about it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZn3kCsw5D8

Yes, almost everything is made in blender except for some textures which were painted in Substance Painter and volumetric effects like explosions which were generated in FumeFX and Houdini before being imported, rendered and composited in blender.

I'm curious to see what kind of impact on ad revenue we'll see in the next couple of days.

hex12648430··on Google unveils Stadia cloud gaming service
Well AMD will have to keep writing good Linux drivers which will most likely benefit everyone with an AMD card. They're also partnered with Unity and Epic Games which means these engines will make it easier to target Linux as the release platform and maybe port some DX-only features over to Vulkan.
hex12648430··on Google unveils Stadia cloud gaming service
Not to mention the frequent horror stories of people having their account closed by google, often by mistake. There's even a link about a story like that right now on the front page. [1] Good luck getting in touch with a human and get your saved games back if that happens to you.

hex12648430··on Google unveils Stadia cloud gaming service
I really hope the latency we've seen in the live demo was due to the venue's poor internet connection because otherwise this will make some games unplayable. They mentioned that Doom Eternal will be available and that it would be a good benchmark for the service's latency but I'm waiting to see some independent reviews to believe it.

Also I don't really understand who's the target audience for this, I doubt people who currently own a console or a gaming PC will care unless the prices (of games or subscription) are extremely competitive.

The only thing that got me excited is that the infrastructure runs on Linux and AMD, this could have a great impact on Linux gaming.

hex12648430··on Biography of Christopher “moot” Poole: The Hacker Known as “4chan”
I don't think Privacy and Anonymity are the same concept. moot was passionate about Anonymous "social networks" and did value the privacy of 4chan's users and staff but he wasn't a hardcore privacy absolutist like you may find elsewhere on the net. And maybe he joined Google hoping to change things from the inside? Who knows.
hex12648430··on Improbable and Epic Games establish $25M fund for ‘more open engines’

hex12648430··on Advent of Nim
/g/ is a discussion board on 4chan(nel). Last year's global leaderboard winner (anonymous user #193354) was part of a private leaderboard for /g/ users.
hex12648430··on Blender is testing PeerTube after YouTube blocks their videos worldwide
>If they used AWS and spun up an instance serving content from every AWS region available the performance would be much better.

This actually could be done by anyone since PeerTube uses WebTorrent. Good samaritans could run a webtorrent-hybrid or WebTorrent Desktop instance and help serve those videos from their home connection or personal server(s).

hex12648430··on UK newsagents to sell ‘porn passes’ to visit X-rated websites
Who decides what is or isn't an X-rated website? Are the authorities going to block tumblr or twitter because of all the porn on there? If not then what is the purpose of this law?

How are websites going to get blocked? DNS filtering? Asking the sites operators to block all traffic from the UK by default?

hex12648430··on Strava heatmap can be used to locate military bases
Some other fun (but not so secret) things to look at: research stations in Antarctica, tourism in North Korea (as well as some officials traveling it seems; some tracks cross the DMZ), your own garden if you have one. There's even a track at the Area 51.
hex12648430··on Intel Issues Updates to Protect Systems from Security Exploits
I find it very interesting that most of their official communication on this matter seems to be for their shareholders rather than the people who are directly impacted by using their products, as if they already completely gave up on the latter. Or maybe they think we wouldn't see through this bullshit PR speak, in which case I feel quite insulted.
hex12648430··on Image Dithering: Eleven Algorithms and Source Code
What a coincidence, I just stumbled upon this article a few hours ago while trying to find out which error diffusion algorithm is used by Photoshop out of curiosity.

I've been playing with dithering recently to create braille art[0] and this series of articles[1] by the libcaca developers has been a huge help. It also goes over model based dithering algorithms which tend to give the best results.

hex12648430··on Void Linux
>The difference would probably be that while anyone can add (or update) a package to the AUR, the xbps-src maintainers have to explicitly allow this.

Nothing is preventing other users to fork or start their own void-packages repo on any git hosting service of their choice. In that sense it's actually more open to contributors than the AUR. Now the experience for the end user might not be perfect if they don't know that such a repo exists.

hex12648430··on Cloudflare has dropped the Daily Stormer
You mean

>how much of /pol/ is actually alt-right and how much is using it as an affect for the lulz

A lot of people on 4chan are getting tired of /pol/'s shenanigans, constantly putting 4chan in the spotlight and dealing with a constant stream of new users that don't assimilate, destroying the culture of smaller boards.

hex12648430··on Krita Foundation: Update
If you're looking for Krita-specific resources I can recommend this course by David Revoy. It goes over pretty much everything there is to know about Krita and has been a huge help to me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEAs-UMLB90

It's in French but you can enable English subtitles and those seem pretty good.

As for getting better as an artist in my opinion nothing beats just practicing a bit everyday and knowing what your tools can do for you. Having some knowledge about fundamentals like composition, balance and color harmonies will also help a lot. You can find a ton of tutorials about these subjects on youtube.

Edit: I just noticed that the second part of the course doesn't have any subtitles yet. It's a shame but it's probably still worth quickly scrolling through it to get an idea about what the software can do.

hex12648430··on Z-order curve usage to decrease dimensionality to 1
The big advantage of Z-order curves is that the addressing computation is very cheap, which is why it's used a lot in computer graphics.
hex12648430··on Uncensorable Wikipedia on IPFS
It is trivial, the command ipfs dht findprovs <hash> will list all the peer ids that do have the content in their repo so unless you blacklist every one but your friend (and he does the same) then the fact that you have accessed <hash> is public knowledge. You could also gc your repo as soon as you have downloaded that content but both of these methods defeat the whole point of IPFS.
hex12648430··on Writing a Raytracer in Rust – Part 1
This is correct, RenderMan is a path tracer which is more physically correct in a lot of aspects (light bounces, caustics, conservation of energy, etc). Before that it relied on the Reyes architecture with ray tracing extensions according to Wikipedia but Pixar stopped supporting it in 2016.
hex12648430··on Physical location of live stream found using flights patterns and astronomy
As far as I understand most of the work was done on 8chan because the 4chan moderators banned discussions of the live stream from /pol/, but most users of the /hwndu/ board on 8chan originally came from 4chan's /pol/.

>it seems that most of the "talent", so to speak, has left 4chan amidst increasingly strict rules against various forms of tomfoolery.

I don't have any number to prove this but to me it seems that the overlap between 8 and 4chan is huge. There's very few 8chan users that absolutely never visit 4chan anymore. 8chan is tiny in comparison to 4chan so the signal-to-noise ratio may seem better there. (according to their front page they get roughly 2k posts/hour, if it was a 4chan board it would be medium-sized and 3 times slower than big boards like /b/, /v/ or /pol/)

hex12648430··on Physical location of live stream found using flights patterns and astronomy
>Shia's flag said "he will not divide us" it was a message of unity

Unity that excludes almost half of the US population. I'm glad that people reacted against the passive-aggresiveness of this message when the stream was hosted in a public space. I don't condone stealing on a private property but let's not fool ourselves here, the message of this art project is reinforcing the US vs THEM mentality that is currently tearing Americans apart rather than truly trying to unify people.
