horstmeyer··on AI agent opens a PR write a blogpost to shames the maintainer who closes it
Well GitHub is Microsoft who bet everything on AI and trying to force-feed it into anything. So I wouldn't hold my breath. Maybe an agent that detects AI.
horstmeyer··on Vector databases: analyzing the trade-offs
I have seen that pattern before, and for me it's a bit of an antipattern. Usually you wouldn't look for substantial code there, and in most cases it is nicer to organize your code in modules. You can import from those in the __init.py__ file, this way achieving the same effect as having all code live in __init.py__. But it's a matter of preference.

US bulk agriculture exports are what keep vast swathes of the developing world from sustaining themselves. Wheat, corn and other heavily subsidized crops are how countries are incentivized producing cash crops like coffee, tea and Kat instead of food.

I don't really understand why the rest of the world doesn't whine, when the US is the country actually keeping millions of the global population poor.

horstmeyer··on X.com Now Points to Twitter.com/
The moment I personally really started to dislike him, was when he gleefully destroyed the dreams and hopes of people by pumping and dumping his favorite shitcoin. I don't want to know how many people in dire conditions lost their life savings while he was mocking them.

"can have some overlap."

I would argue in an economic system that rewards the most ruthless competitor "can" is a very nice word here.

horstmeyer··on Time is running out on the Climate Clock
Out of curiosity: what do you think your country stands for?
horstmeyer··on Study finds billions of nanoplastics released when microwaving containers
I had a organic chemistry professor when I studied biology at university, who said he was convinced that microwaves split amino acid chains in proteins, thus leading to free radicals which could be cancerogenic.

Ever heard of Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib?
horstmeyer··on The Struggle to Make Lab-Grown Meat
I really prefer such factories over the way a lot of tofu is produced (by burning plastic): https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/14/world/asia/indonesia-tofu...
horstmeyer··on The Struggle to Make Lab-Grown Meat
I can't believe in let's say 200 years from now humans will still consume animals - if our species survives that is. I'm sure this will be looked upon as very barbaric to breed real animals and eat them.
horstmeyer··on Time-restricted eating reduces visceral fat and improves metabolic syndrome
Yeah, diet is at least 70% and exercise at most 30%. Unfortunately.
horstmeyer··on Time-restricted eating reduces visceral fat and improves metabolic syndrome
Yes, to some degree. But what people do when their dogs get too fat? They reduce the amount of food they give them, and after a while their weight goes down. There are many factors like stress, microbiome and sleep, but in the end it still boils down to calories in calories out.
horstmeyer··on HTTP Feeds
Does SSE work reliably in mobile browsers nowadays? A few years back when I tried, it was working OK in Chrome for Android but mobile browser support didn't seem complete.
horstmeyer··on A simple system I’m using to stay in touch with hundreds of people
Someone made a tool for this purpose: https://github.com/monicahq/monica

"You may call it cheating but considering my poor memory, I call it caring."

horstmeyer··on A simple system I’m using to stay in touch with hundreds of people
When I miss people, I often don't have time to reach out. When I have time, I often don't remember that I wanted to reach out to people. Sometimes life keeps us too busy.
horstmeyer··on World ocean temperatures in 2021 were the hottest ever recorded
Too bad you can't go skiing, but I'm a bit more worried about plant and wildlife that "thinks" it's spring and then will get killed when it gets cold again later.
horstmeyer··on GnuPG is now financially self-sustaining
It was because Germany is a paradise for lobbyists, and Microsoft agreed to build their Microsoft Germany headquarters in Munich.

MongoDB is web scale, not universe scale.
horstmeyer··on “I wish I could have licensed the Id source code releases as BSD”
My understanding is that when Copilot automatically inserts some GPL licensed code fragment into your project, your project automatically has to become GPL licensed, whether you want and realize or not.
horstmeyer··on Highways speed limit in Germany would reduce CO2 emissions by 2M tonnes
Better introduce a speed limit for SUV and ICE cars, and make it mandatory for them to use the right lane. No speed limit for electric cars. Helps adoption and Germany keeps one of the last things that make it special.
horstmeyer··on Burnout Is Real
Burnout is real, but I built a website for the side business I just started and I'm available for react/C# gigs. Come on! Glad that the author got out of something where he was struggling and into something he's passionate about. But a proper burnout would affect him more.

Edit: Of course if the author feels he had a burnout that's valid. But IMO a burnout hits you much harder.

horstmeyer··on Blood test that finds 50 types of cancer is accurate enough to be rolled out
Thanks for the correction, that was what my doctor told me. But maybe I also misunderstood him.
horstmeyer··on Blood test that finds 50 types of cancer is accurate enough to be rolled out
Same for me in Germany. You are eligible to one checkup when you turn 35, that's it, lol. Otherwise you have to convince the doctor a certain check is necessary. Usually doctors don't like that very much. I would even happily pay for it myself, but I still need to convince the doctor I'm not a hypochondriac.

horstmeyer··on Klarna users are being signed in to random accounts
Do you have sources on them looking at transaction data please? That is clearly not necessary for processing the payment.

Edit: Found an article in German - https://www.sueddeutsche.de/geld/zahlung-per-sofortueberweis...

They claim they need to do this to make sure there is sufficient money in the account, even with transactions that might not be reflected in the balance, and they also check for other "Sofortüberweisungen" to detect fraud. Makes sense in a way but still quite shady. If there wasn't enough money in my account, or other transfers pending would my bank even allow their transfer?
