That’s amazing, thank you very much.

No advance without a trade-off.
huppeldepup··on Why is the Oral-B iOS app almost 300 MB? And why is Colgate's app even bigger..?
If only the ad quality went up with the efficiency with which they syphon the data. I don’t have a driver’s license and I’m in a relationship yet a considerable amount of personalised ads on my devices are about dating sites and car dealerships.

At 32 min she talks about a book called "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Microcomputers, but didn't know who to ask" by Slater. I found a reference on archive but nothing more, also nothing on the author.

Leland W. Slater, "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Microcomputers," Computop i cs . 3/82, pp. 38ff.

We should coax them into using coax instead.

huppeldepup··on The Danger of Superhuman AI Is Not What You Think
I used to know one philosophy student in my student years and this was exactly the beaf I had with him at every single discussion. I believe this is part of the training, dissecting sentences.
huppeldepup··on The Delusion of the Polygraph
I’d compare it to the sobriety test of being asked to walk in a straight line. someone who’s drunk will put a lot of effort in it, which is the giveaway.
huppeldepup··on Nokia 6600 vs. Samsung S24 Ultra
We’re hampered by the limits of engineering, not those of physics by a long shot.
huppeldepup··on CO poultry workers test positive for bird flu after outbreak at egg facility
You know those youtube videos where a puppet in an arena is shown and it’s iteratively selected/respawn/retrained for getting across an obstacle field? This is exactly that. First obstacle has been cleared and now the population is waiting for a mutation that gets them compatible with the human cell wall.
huppeldepup··on If AI chatbots are the future, I hate it
…so they’ll disconnect at the 9m59s mark?
huppeldepup··on At the Mountains of Madness
What you’re describing is called the law of conservation of misery. Misery is like a water-filled party balloon. If you squeeze it in one place it expands in another, often between your fingers.

Cody’s lab on youtube did a video on this, with balloons
huppeldepup··on A Few Notes on the Culture by Iain M Banks (1994)
My gut tells me that elimination of scarcity is going to be a piecewise proces, whereby each step is countered with a lock-in of scarcity rules.
huppeldepup··on A Few Notes on the Culture by Iain M Banks (1994)
We have recently developed a system that eliminates scarcity for all digital media. The results is not an ideological re-alignment but a crowbar that locks down the rules of scarcity.

huppeldepup··on Moving to a RTOS on the RP2040
The author mentioned this somewhere in his book: competitors pronounced it mucous as a joke/jab. I believe it’s pronounced micro-cos as in microcosmos.
huppeldepup··on Moving to a RTOS on the RP2040
No mention of ChibiOS, unfortunately. I checked and the port still has problems installing on flash, so runs on RAM only.

I’d also like to suggest uC/OS. It doesn’t take much more than setting a timer in asm to port that rtos but I haven’t had the time myself to try it.

Tangent … how exactly did one publish under a pseudonym in a peer-reviewed system? Is that still possible today?
huppeldepup··on Self-driving Waymos secure final clearance for expansion beyond S.F

huppeldepup··on TSMC experimenting with rectangular wafers vs. round for more chips per wafer
I suspect they're going to start with a rectangular substrate on which they'll grow Si and then high electron mobility materials.
huppeldepup··on Please don't mention AI again
I'm going to copy my answer from zellyn in a thread some time ago:

"It’s been obvious even to casual observers like myself for years that Waymo/Google was one of the only groups taking the problem seriously and trying to actually solve it, as opposed to pretending you could add self-driving with just cameras in an over-the-air update (Tesla), or trying to move fast and break things (Uber), or pretending you could gradually improve lane-keeping all the way into autonomous driving (car manufacturers). That’s why it’s working for them. (IIUC, Cruise has pretty much also always been legit?)"

huppeldepup··on How to design and manufacture your own chip [video]

there's no real reason for hobbyists to design a custom IC - anything they can afford to get manufactured could be done on an FPGA.
Except if you work on a mac. No fpga for apple.
