we all have to go out eventually, some have the "luxury" of choosing the way we go
To become a better C++ programmer you just use the language, but not on a project where you fix bugs, but on a project you write from start to finish. If this is not possible at work, you could try looking into contributing to open source c++ projects on github...
When using C++ in practice to build projects you realize what features are actually useful, what to avoid and what the limitations of the language are. C++ does have a lot of after thought add-ons...
maybe you could consider joining the machine on a project that feeds the AI with unique new art, I imagine the models will need to be updated or re-learned with "license friendly" art at some point, might be a nice way to go out with the bang..
if anything I would argue that human taking code from multiple places and making it compile into something more useful is much more synthetiz-ing than AI...
1. low level embedded - RTOS, bare metal programming, micro controllers, C
2. higher level embedded - linux, android, qnx, various arm platforms, c++, yocto, cmake, various open source libraries depending on your specialization
for both cases you will need to know your c/c++, know how to read schematics and use oscilloscope, know how to read datasheets and apply that knowledge into drivers, know how to work with debuggers and digital analyzers, know embedded OS of choice and the surrounding ecosystem
its very interesting field where you get to work with and interact with things you implement
there are some downsides, like you need HW or remote jig, so remote work might be challenging or you end up dragging HW with your if you want to be on the move
due to high demand in Europe where I'm at, I don't expect we will be forced to change careers in foreseeable future, however sometimes I think driving a garbage truck may be more desirable to pop-ing yet another problem from the never ending task queue.
age in itself is not a problem. the real problem is losing enthusiasm and drive to perform for others. that may or may not come with age and realization you are a hamster in a wheel as opposed to building something of long lasting value you can reap benefit of in old age.
you may or may not get a raise if you ask for it, you will most assuredly get no raise if you never ask
squeaky door gets the grease..
they are fine with throwing their money around until a problem is solved. and would much rather hire someone with 1.5x your pay than to give a 10% raise. its just a political / power thing...
internal politics and preserving imbalances in distribution of power is much more valuable than adding a little inefficiency to worker output
for business option I got Dell Precision 5470 this summer, and it looks pretty solid so far
Both laptops are running Linux and look like they could last 5 years without any issues, which is usually fairly enough.
charging hourly is the beginning of contracting, but makes you count minutes and report as such which can be pain in the ass
level above that is setting up a daily rate
another level above is payment per milestone / project delivered - never tried this one, if attempted as solo contractor you can shoot yourself in the foot easily, as we all know software projects get underestimated all the time..
red flags? being hired on already running project to salvage it, because someone somewhere screwed something up by underestimating the complexity or their skills and now the deadline is close and budget was already drained ...
someone could also feel like having a divorce and filling up that warchest...
I'm married only for a few years, but I have some observations; money is a touchy subject, it is a big part of marriage and I think in the past the assets of partners were a decisive factor on whether the marriage could take place or not.
today, we live differently, but the nature of people has not changed, resources are vital and in case of disproportionate balance, in this case money wise, issues are sure to come up sooner or later...
I guess you will need to find a way to get on her level, or provide something to the marriage of equal value, or go solo and fill up that warchest...
My impression is Apple likes to polish everything about the user experience and Google likes to have as much broad impact as possible.
Performance of apps depends much more on the actual app developer than OS supplier I would say, I bet you could find more inefficiencies in Apps than in actual OS code (famous last words).
first of all I recommend uninstall as a priority. the beginnings are hard, you definitely need to find a way to break the cycle work->going home->playing dota by finding appropriate hobby, preferably something physical
as a developer with sedentary/stationary job you _MUST_ be physically active in hours outside of your job, especially if you plan this to be a career spanning multiple years. Balancing out mentally difficult job with physical activity will improve your mood, concentration and performance at work as well. I have seen a lot of my colleagues going to their mid 30's with back problems, chronic migraines, eye problems (redshift the damn monitors guys...), diabetes, general unfitness, etc...
I recommend walks, cycling, running, combat sports, hiking, anything you can do daily and be as active as possible...
It definitely is not ment to apply to things u do in your free time. As long as you do your stuff on your own hardware, it does not relate to IP or source code your employer owns, or does not provide competing services to your employer's customers, I don't see how your boss interprets that clause in such a way.
In addition I would check how 'work' is defined in your contract, since you are in EU as I am, I believe it usually mentions place where work is performed and work time from - to, work load (how many hours) and description of work. If the contract defines 'work' as any activity you do in your life that would be pretty jaw dropping.
