igivanov··on Pandora papers: biggest leak of offshore data exposes financial secrets of rich
>Putin is not named directly in these papers

yes that's absolutely damning. typical Putin /s

can you share more of your conclusions based on absence of evidence?

igivanov··on Anti-Lukashenka hackers seize senior Belarusian officials' personal data
i would prefer you start a revolution in the US and the UK. the world will be infinitely grateful to all of you when endless wars, aggressions, support for dictatorships and colour revolutions come to an end.
igivanov··on Scandinavian Monitoring Stations Detect Unexplained Radiation Spike over Europe
have you read the article? - no you haven't

"With relatively few sites reporting the radiation increase, identifying its origins is challenging. The RIVM added media reports that it believes Russia is the source are likely based on mistranslations of its Dutch statement, and that "no specific country of origin can be pointed out at this moment."

yet you took the trouble to collect in your post almost every single bad thing you heard about Russia, half of them outright lies, the rest being half-truths, and dump them all here.

igivanov··on Russia lifts ban on Telegram
that would be the UK government, has nothing to do with the FSB (which is btw ~ FBI of Russia) or NSA.
igivanov··on Officer of China’s People’s Liberation Army Arrested at LAX
>It's like the Soviets copying the space shuttle and concorde.

they didn't though, please try again.

igivanov··on Coronavirus Death Toll Rises to 805, Passing SARS
technically you are probably correct though I was more replying to the parent's statement that it kills newborns

>The outbreak was first reported on December 31, but no children younger than 15 years old had been diagnosed as of January 22. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine said at the time that "children might be less likely to become infected or, if infected, may show milder symptoms" than adults.

>Since then, doctors have recorded a few one-off cases among children: a 9-month-old girl in Beijing, a child in Germany whose father was diagnosed with the virus first, and a child in Shenzhen, China, who was infected but displayed no symptoms.

>On Wednesday, Chinese authorities confirmed that an infant in Wuhan, China, had tested positive for the virus 30 hours after being born; the baby's mother is a coronavirus patient.

igivanov··on Coronavirus Death Toll Rises to 805, Passing SARS

igivanov··on On ‘Island’ in Russian Arctic, Arrival of Fast Internet Shakes Political Calm
Yes I missed it. My other points still stand.
igivanov··on U.S. carried out secret cyber strike on Iran after Saudi oil attack: officials
But they will start shooting when they learn that a conflict has started. You know, if a US attack in the strait begins it will become obvious pretty pretty soon. Also they don't need a sophisticated link from the top to start an attack, just a simple command.
igivanov··on U.S. carried out secret cyber strike on Iran after Saudi oil attack: officials
It means they are off the grid and are trained to act independently of the central command.
igivanov··on U.S. carried out secret cyber strike on Iran after Saudi oil attack: officials
Your quotes quotes sound impressive but I wouldn't take them at face value and think that the Iranians are unaware of and unprepared to face these threats.

You may want to read articles by this guy for an alternative view on Iran's capabilities.

as a sidenote, some people even believed the US claims that their air defence systems are the best in the world, until a few days ago.

igivanov··on U.S. carried out secret cyber strike on Iran after Saudi oil attack: officials
Not likely at all. The Iranian defence structure is highly decentralized.
igivanov··on Regex for Noobs – An Illustrated Guide
>time and effort might be key here for your mastery of this subject.

It doesn't have to be this way. If most programming languages were designed like regular expressions they would be unusable. I can spend a year w/o writing a single line of Pascal or C++ and then it would come back immediately. I occasionally found regular expressions useful in my work, but only a couple of times could justify spending time on learning a little bit of it only to forget the next day. In a few other cases I simply googled a solution and used w/o understanding it. Most often I just write code instead, it is verbose but at least it's clear what it does.

igivanov··on Insured price $2,758, cash price $521
In Canada it looks equally expensive if you don't have insurance (e.g. a non resident).

You pay CAD750-800 for an ER visit if they just take a look at you.

igivanov··on The CIA Spied on People Through Their Smart TVs, Leaked Documents Reveal (2017)
what has intelligence and national security to do with the things the CIA is best known for: endless subversive acts, overthrows of governments, creating and enabling terrorists, assassinations, torture programs, extraordinary renditions? if anything it's quite the opposite.
igivanov··on When Boris Yeltsin Went Grocery Shopping in Clear Lake
While recounting anecdotes and making witty observations, let's not forget that this man was responsible for bringing incredible misery upon the people of Russia. Not he alone, but he was the main one.

Also a drunkard, a dictator and a darling of the West.

Ha! That did the trick! Though it gave me these cryptic errors the add-ons are now enabled, thanks!

Edit: another weirdness: i decided to take a look at a different computer (unrelated to this one, at work via remote desktop) which is running exactly the same FF and Windows and all add-on are enabled. it's on 24x7; i didn't do anything to it.

igivanov··on Report deems Russia a pioneer in GPS spoofing attacks
>people read and accept this capability without question

These days most negative statements about Russia are accepted at face value.

igivanov··on How badly are we being ripped off on eyewear? Former industry execs tell all
Is it in the US? In Canada Costco prescription glasses are horribly expensive.
igivanov··on Italy’s olive crisis intensifies as deadly tree disease spreads
It's sad for producers of genuine olive oil but as a rather indifferent consumer I always remember that olive oil, honey and I forget what else are the most falsified food products in the world. I would guess that the market of "extra virgin olive oil" will remain, cough, healthy.
igivanov··on Reasons to Fear Another ‘Great War’
What do you expect from a country that Israel has been demonizing for the last 20+ years calling for bombing it and spreading lies about its non-existent nuclear arms programs? A love poem?

>Iran is training proxies in Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine to attack Israel.

while Israel helps ISIS in Syria to destroy the country, bombed Lebanon, annexed the Golans and areas in the West Bank... you really shouldn't be digging up that dead high horse.

igivanov··on Thirtieth anniversary of the publication of Vasily Grossman’s “Life and Fate”
That's nonsense, it's not his definition at all.
igivanov··on We Now Know More About the Apparent Poisoning of the Pussy Riot Member
it's an uphill battle, even the HN audience, at first glance consisting of people capable of independent thinking, is brainwashed and uncritical beyond belief.
igivanov··on Interview with Dr Erika Camacho on the Hartman-Grobman theorem [audio]
Generally it's a pretty basic concept in analyzing any system, 1st step is to use a constant, if it doesn't fit then a linear model, etc. Can use different approximations depending on the circumstance, e.g. you can approximate sin(x) with x around 0...

Is there something special to it in this particular case?

igivanov··on Worst Computer Bugs in History: Therac-25 (2017)
That's about being a Professional Engineer, which legally entitles you to certain actions (e.g. sign off on design docs). Anyone can call themselves engineers of any kind as long as they don't pretend to be P.Engs. I am not sure though that being P.Engs in software means anything in practice, unlike in e.g. structural engineering.
igivanov··on Why we downplay Fermi’s paradox
>and yet only in the last 10,000 or so did civilization actually start.

igivanov··on Trash piles up in US as China closes door to recycling
>glass

In the good old USSR there was a limited number of sizes/styles of glass bottles and jars in circulation. Each one had a deposit value, and if it had no cracks/chips and all labels were removed, it could be returned for direct reuse, i.e. no melting and further manufacturing was involved. I think it worked OK since it had existed for many decades, and energy was cheap in those days.
