illuminated··on I tried to move my notes out of Emacs. I failed. Again
I have a pending task to tryout the COG [1]. The description makes it one of the best thought-through processes for me to write things down while not being a major time consuming event. Whenever I've tried in the past to take more notes, I'd had to plan a time to do it and it was very difficult to find time. Another problem I occasionally have is that if I write something down, my brain kind of let go of the most of the memory of it, so the more I write and organize, I feel more stupid.

illuminated··on Tell HN: OpenAI's New Pro 500 subscription, reduced Pro 200 usage
You're right, I've missed it. Cannot delete this post anymore, though.
illuminated··on Never Launch Alone
"Never Launch Alone" implies if you don't have a network already to help you promote - you'd get it there. It seems you don't.

Not sure who's doing multiple launches at the same time and a group of 25 connections I wouldn't consider a "network" requiring a special platform for coordination. That's a group of people I'd consider a closer circle and I'd coordinate through a WA group.

If I'm launching something, I'd appreciate help with different launching platforms coordination, maybe crowd gathering, etc.

illuminated··on Postgres IDE in VS Code
I wonder how this compares to pgModeler (https://pgmodeler.io/) which I've been using the most in the recent years, would love is someone who had tried both could share some observations.
illuminated··on Ask HN: Any book recommendations for higher management positions?
Thank you!
illuminated··on Alternatives to Adobe
It's sad that most of the mentioned stand-alone (desktop) alternatives do not have a Linux option.
illuminated··on Show HN: YakGPT – A locally running, hands-free ChatGPT UI
Well, I'd love to see a change there as well, then: if I'd want to share the interface with my family I wouldn't want to reenter everything everywhere they might be accessing the page from.
illuminated··on Show HN: YakGPT – A locally running, hands-free ChatGPT UI
The only thing I'd suggest to consider to add is some sort of authentication. If I deploy this on a server so I could reach it with my mobile, on the go, and it has my API credentials, I wouldn't want anyone who stumbles upon the page to be able to interface ChatGPT on my expense.

Otherwise, it really looks good.

Never heard of them, thanks
illuminated··on Forge – A Django SaaS Framework
From the pricing page [0]:

Is there a free trial?

Unfortunately, because of the logistics of how this works, there is no free trial period. We do our best to give you an idea of what you're buying via public documentation, videos, and an overview of the repo. If you buy it and truly decide you aren't going to use it, contact us about a refund.

illuminated··on Tell HN: 1Password shares passwords you don't want shared
I'm in no way affiliated with them, but as a very happy user I can recommend you to try BitWarden [0] instead of 1Password. It doesn't have the bug you have described, nor it shows passwords in plain text by default (you can also copy a hidden password to clipboard - useful when you share a screen with someone).

illuminated··on Deploy a Gmail-like email server in 30 (ish) minutes
I'm using mailcow for year and a half now, moved to it from Kolab. It's really great and painless to manage it. The only thing missing for me is the LDAP auth, something I got used to over the years with Kolab. The OP's solutions has built-in LDAP auth, so I'll give it a try.
illuminated··on OpenLGTV: Legal reverse engineering and research of LG TVs firmware
Is there any similar project covering Panasonic smart TV's?
illuminated··on PostgreSQL 14
PgModeler [0], cannot recommend it enough. You have to compile yourself the free version (it's open source - you pay if you want to directly download the precompiled binaries) and it's a bit of work if you want to include the query optimizer plugin, but there's documentation and GitHub issues with solutions already in place. Once you compile it for the first time and start using it, you'll keep doing it again with each new version. I haven't found a better Postgres tool yet.

edit: it's a cross-platform tool, supporting Linux, Mac and Windows (32/64)

illuminated··on Serbia surveillance law urgently withdrawn
You're right. I stopped tracking his formal roles (or caring in any capacity about them) since the time when the most prestigious position in the state was "the first vice-president of the government" (his, at the time) and the running joke was that everyone, including the PM and the president, were eyeing that position if they wanted to advance their career further.
illuminated··on Serbia surveillance law urgently withdrawn
I don't believe it will ever be forgotten. The PM in the article says he withdraws it as he's facing elections in 6 months, not for any other reason. He's got a strong support among the elderly and/or "conservatives" so it is expected for him to win those elections. Once he does win, I'm sure he'll try to reintroduce the same thing.

The capital of Serbia is being covered in surveillance cameras for some time now, a "gift" from Chinese friends, and I don't think they'd let the technology sit unused, especially that the overall unrest of his opposition is rising.

illuminated··on Serbia surveillance law urgently withdrawn
The law was withdrawn after everyone noticed its contents: https://www.b92.net/eng/news/politics.php?yyyy=2021&mm=09&dd...

Edit: probably a better article to explain the withdrawal: https://www.b92.net/eng/news/politics.php?yyyy=2021&mm=09&dd...

illuminated··on Apple and Google must allow other in-app payment systems, Korean law declares
The text mentions developers, not just users... I assume (by understanding the published text) they'd (Korean officials) want to target any users of apps published by Korean developers, no matter the location.
illuminated··on Apple and Google must allow other in-app payment systems, Korean law declares
I wonder if this would lead to an increased number of company formations in S. Korea. My first impulsive reaction was to search about their local formation and tax laws.

illuminated··on Python app development for beginners – Kivy mobile app tutorial
I'm not sure what's the situation with kivy nowdays, but when I tested it last time for mobile (few years ago) I was taken away with the initial loading time... When you run a kivy app you see a loader with kivy logo and it lasts too long to consider your app snappy enough. Once the app actually starts, it runs OK.

Desktop performance was better, including loading times, due to direct utilization of OpenGL.
