immmmmm··on The Curse of Soldered RAM
On YT there’s dosdude soldering ram on M series SoCs

Good BGA experience and a steady hand seems required

immmmmm··on I don't understand quantum physics (2018)
I loved the book QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter by Feynman as a child. Funny enough I always saw QM from a path integral PoV, a decade before I got to learn the formalism
immmmmm··on In Hilbert space, all things are quantumly possible
Yes, and in a more general way Noether thm applies in QM/QFT as well (energy conservation is just a special case). Symmetries become operators acting on the Hilbert/Fock space (ie representation).

With the caveats: - anomalies-> symmetries/conservation broken by quantum noise (has to be cancelled in valid theories) - Heisenberg’s incertitude

immmmmm··on I love software rendering
Michael Abrash's Graphics Programming Black Book is still one of my all time favourite. What they did back then was almost black magic. I learned a good part of maths, cs and physics trying to mod id1 with this book during my teenaghood.
immmmmm··on Simons Foundation launches $15M effort to help mathematicians navigate AI era
Isn’t the very pitch ai bros have to their investors: “we’ll replace ppl by tokens.”

If it doesn’t pay for non-permanent staff salary that would be sad for the maths ppl indeed.

OTOH I have a phd in th physics, 15+ y of academic senior researcher experience, now working 60+ h /w on an unpaid internship and using lunch money to pay for tokens.

And I’m by far not most unlucky

Edit: just to put things in perspective, my phd field (string theory) has 15-30M€ annual funding in Europe (per google)

immmmmm··on 11 year old unsoundness bugs found in Rust borrow checker
Aren’t some type systems (eg Lean) able to essentially verify/prove arbitrary mathematics?
immmmmm··on OpenSCAD the Programmers Solid 3D CAD Modeller
I have been moving from fusion 360/eagle to FreeCAD+Kicad for mixed electronic/mechanical designs and never looked back. Since 1.0 assemblies work better in FC than 360, less crashes at least for my limited cases. Also an order of magnitude faster to boot. Didn’t have any issue with open cascade kernel, even with weird filets etc. Kicad is a joy to use compared to eagle, and library is even better.

Never tried OpenSCAD, maybe I’m old fashioned but graphic workflow works better for me.

immmmmm··on Nobel Prize in Physics 2026: Francis Halzen
I remember one of my professor, a pioneer of neutrino detectors in Europe, mentioning Ice Cube in a lecture more than 20 years ago. Long time scale (due to funding).
immmmmm··on Promising discoveries about the potential for life on one of Saturn’s icy moons
Serious question: US spend 50+ B$ / month to throw JDAMs on little girls schools, what do we gain here?

Serious answer: on a yearly 130T$ GDP at least a good third is spent on destroying this planet. 50$B which ends up paying phds is barely one peanut.

immmmmm··on Gravity seems holographic. What does that mean for reality?
No string theory (10d) or m theory (11d) map to lower dimensions (eg 4d) via (generalisation of) Kaluza Klein compactification. Vector boson (eg maxwell or Yang mills) are internal degree la of freedom-> 6/7d graviton becomes a photon/ gluon.

There’s holography in string theory: AdS/CFT but this rather maps 4d super Yang mills (on the boundary of AdS5) in an AdS5xS5 background: which is one holography correspondence we know works.

Holography is much more common, but we only really understand it on hyperbolic spaces.

Also since it has a theory at strong coupling on one side we cannot really do calculation on that side and verify it.

You can use it tho to make calculations.

immmmmm··on Why do we need human mathematicians anymore?
I’m out of academia but in defence of former colleagues I note:

- Maths and theoretical physics are very cheap (compared to other disciplines)

- Maths and physics researchers provide lectures for all other scientific fields

- Brut forcing maths/physics problems require debilitating amount of compute/money. This will make research in these topics even more biased towards rich countries.

- There most certainly will be pervers effect, ppl refraining from publishing results etc

- it’s very unlikely that private ai labs will play ball with academic research. They scrapped the internet and now sell access to their models.

As much as I’m happy to see new tools, I have the feeling there will be nefarious effects.

Please note possible name collision with PostGIS Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) data type.
immmmmm··on Linux from Scratch
I started with Slackware 1.0 on i386.

I certainly do not miss compiling X11!

immmmmm··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
Those who have token money will succeed.

It biases maths and theoretical physics towards the rich.

That one thing that was free.

immmmmm··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
As a musician with a modular synth, I have three boxes, two just for audio.

Somehow, after decades of careful curation, the cable I need is always missing!

immmmmm··on Finite time blowup for an averaged three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation (2014)
PS2: AdS/CFT (and we have at least one good candidate since Maldacena in string theory) correspondence shows that strongly coupled quantum systems in d dimensions are dual to *classical* gr systems in d+1 dimensions.

Somewhere somehow dualities seems to relate completely different systems, that non relativistic dissipative systems happen in all generality somewhere in that mess is barely a surprise.

I mean, if one believes ER=EPR GR and quantum mechanics are just the same thing.

immmmmm··on Finite time blowup for an averaged three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation (2014)
Ps: your comment on dissipation is good. But in certain frames GR can reproduce that. I’m far from an expert, but definition of energy is rly hard in GR (need both Noether thms).

Research on the topic seems to have stalled a decade ago. Probably for a good reason.

immmmmm··on Finite time blowup for an averaged three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation (2014)
sorry for the late reply, see answer above
immmmmm··on Finite time blowup for an averaged three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation (2014)
sorry for the late answer..

yes you can : https://arxiv.org/abs/1211.1983

but you might need to understand it in the context of holography

in some frame you can recover non-relativistic symmetries, we got a paper on this back then, but so hardcore i only understand parts of it https://arxiv.org/abs/1205.5777

immmmmm··on Finite time blowup for an averaged three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation (2014)
It’s pretty crazy what dynamics you get from NS.. until one realise they emerge from a tiny part of the solution space of Einstein equations.. which themselves emerge at the low energy limit of sth much bigger.
immmmmm··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
Per IPCC AR6 total power goes from 18TW to 16TW in a good scenario, due to increased efficiency (no Carnot cycle).

Degrowth per IPCC / earth system scientists mean the 10% the richest consuming less power.

It’s much more a wealth distribution problem rather than a technological one. Both IPCC and IPBES agree there.

Can’t wait for the downvotes on that one. That’s the one hill I’ll die on, literally.

Edit: AR6 (WG2+3)

immmmmm··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
He does says (said) a lot of stupid things, but also has a good analysis in some domains. He’s very influenced by meadows/ world3/ club de Rome and while it’s a toy model it certainly a good thing to have a global view.
immmmmm··on Ambient CSS v3 – Blender meets CSS
While I have a massive collection of VSTs I always end up using my very limited modular and Rytm mk1. And Elektron machines are an UI nightmare.
immmmmm··on AI to help planes avoid climate-warming 'sky graffiti'
Yes.

I read somewhere that 90% of human never took a plane.

The contributed proposition by the 10 year old kid to make fossil fuel companies pay for solar panels is perhaps the best policy proposal I’ve ever seen.

The second one is to make water companies CEOs swim in the Thames.

That is a program.

immmmmm··on Unexpected Solidlike Fracture in Simple Liquids
Adaptation is not an alternative for mitigation. We have to do adaptation AND mitigation (drastic reduction of emissions).

We can stop CC, science is very clear on this.
