It's been 40 years and I'm not sure if I have completely processed it. I can still hear her voice. Best of luck to you and your wife, I hope you have many good and pleasant years together.

I'd consider that a bug.

jacquesm··on GeForce vs. Workstation GPUs: Nvidia's Half Rate, Priced
This is a pretty good article but it ignores one very important factor: the amount of VRAM you get per slot is often just as important as the amount of compute that accompanies it. An RTX 5090 for instance, in the largest configuration, is 32GB. An RTX 6000 PRO is 96 GB. That means that in the same number of slots you'll be able to put 3x as much VRAM and that's a massive advantage. 4 RTX 4090's are way easier to administer than 12 5090s, the power consumption will be lower and due to less bus activity you will probably get (much) better overall performance.

One of these days someone will figure out a reliable way to transplant a 5090 GPU to a 64 or 96 GB remanufactured card and then NVidia will have to find an answer if the volumes are high enough. I don't know the ratio of 5090's sold into the gaming channel versus RTX 6000 PRO and other datacenter products but I would not be surprised if the 5090's still held the edge.

jacquesm··on Ask HN: I Need Advice
Hey there TuxedoBuddy, that sucks. My advice would be the advice that I would give myself in your situation: take any job, no matter how low and immediately start looking for something better. That kicks you out of the rut and limits the damage, it also immediately stretches your runway. Besides that: it hopefully will create a healthy dissatisfaction with your new found job to the point that you will be very motivated to get rid of it, but this time on your terms. Much strength, I hope this helps you.

What a story, wow. I kept hoping to read it ended well. I lost my sister to the same at an even younger age (23) so this was a pretty hard read.

That's a risk, but not as big a risk as a report escaping quarantine.

Yes, I'm counting on that specifically.
jacquesm··on Why is this fingerprinting script creating bioweapons?
No, it was a bit more subtle than that but I'm definitely not going to post the secret sauce in an open forum. The trick is to trigger the filters in a way that they'll block the mail completely, not just spam trap it.
jacquesm··on From confession to conspiracy: How the Wedgewood fake polls story spread
As far as I'm aware these poll results have (roughly) a normal distribution, right now the spread between the two extremes in polls with sufficiently high 'N' to be taken into account in most reports differ by 19%.

Oh, that's funny. I don't mind people with screen readers reading it. The Venn diagram with 'people with screen readers' on one side and 'people that are about to break an embargo' must be an interesting subset.
jacquesm··on Why is this fingerprinting script creating bioweapons?
Feel free! The easiest way to do this is white text on a white background on the last page of the document. If you want to do it on every page do it in the header or the footer. Font size '1' for bonus points ;)
jacquesm··on It's now official, tech is the new tobacco
Social media is a subset of tech though.
jacquesm··on It's now official, tech is the new tobacco
> I doubt tech right now can be equated with tobacco, its use does not kill.

I don't think that's true. Tech kills plenty of people.

jacquesm··on Why is this fingerprinting script creating bioweapons?
That's not a luxury. I get a clearly AI crafted mails that reference HN.

Thank you for the answer. I can see the indemnification as being a requirement to work on anything like this, the downsides would be so large as to be uninsurable so probably without that indemnification the work simply wouldn't get done.
jacquesm··on From confession to conspiracy: How the Wedgewood fake polls story spread
I think that that is more of an illustration that polls are always about a statistical likelihood and never about an absolute. With a 3-5% margin 14% is not as unlikely as you might think. (It's ~ 1:3).
jacquesm··on Tesla Semi catches fire on I-880
Oh, absolutely, in the aggregate there is no contest here. I just wanted to illustrate how incredibly fast lithium fires can spread.

I've made a bit of a study of this because I use Lithium Ion batteries in volume. I take a lot of safety precautions because I realize full well how dangerous they are. At the same time I have a 25L canister of diesel and another with gasoline sitting around and I have zero expectation of either of those spontaneously combusting.

jacquesm··on Tesla Semi catches fire on I-880
> I needed a term that was less cumbersome than "diesel and gasoline", and "petroleum" seemed apt. If you have a suggestion for some other term, I'm all ears.

Vehicle fuels?

> I did correct for installed base. > I did correct for installed base. I'm using fatalities per vehicle mile traveled. As I said, diesel vehicles are 11% of vehicle miles traveled in the US and responsible for 12% of vehicle fire deaths in the US. EVs are 3% of vehicle miles traveled and less than 1% of vehicle fire deaths, so they're safer than diesel.

That conclusion doesn't hold up.

This isn't about EVs in general, it is about EV trucks vs Diesel trucks.

> At this point, I don't know what would change your mind on this topic. I would change my mind if stats showed higher fire fatality rates per vehicle miles traveled for EVs, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I feel like I'm arguing with an anti-nuclear person. Statistics show that nuclear is extremely safe, but anti-nuclear activists ignore stats and point to nuclear accidents and the dangers of radiation. Meanwhile they ignore or discount the harms caused by alternatives. I don't see how your line of argument is any different.

Totally different subject.

jacquesm··on Tesla Semi catches fire on I-880
Sorry, it was just meant as an illustration that in these things a bit of precision matters. If there is someone in this thread that is hostile that would be you.
jacquesm··on Why is this fingerprinting script creating bioweapons?
Nice sleuthing!

We do a similar thing to mark documents that are still under embargo and one day I forgot to remove the watermark. The customer complained they had not received the document (a day or two after I sent it), and much searching was done. Finally we found a line in an outlook log on their end that said that the watermark was the reason the file had been put in indefinite quarantine until someone would take a look at it.

That's when I realized my error, and of course it was soon fixed afterwards. It is the first proof that it worked though, so I'm kind of happy about that.

jacquesm··on Tesla Semi catches fire on I-880
That minor, inconsequential point is the difference between a fire that is easy to put out, one that has burned out before the firetruck gets there and one that you simply can't put out.
jacquesm··on Tesla Semi catches fire on I-880
Gasoline and diesel are very different from 'petroleum'.

Petroleum is essentially crude oil, diesel is a slightly lighter fraction and gasoline is a much lighter fraction.

Former gas station owner here, I think I know the difference. As for diesel vehicles having larger fuel tanks: they tend to be larger vehicles, and proportionally speaking they don't do much more harm because they are much easier to put out. The best way to deal with a battery fire is a controlled burn until it is spent.

As for the ratio of the fatalities: of course you need to correct for installed base.
