jagger27··on Gio UI – Cross-platform GUI for Go
And it has laggy scrolling. What’s the benefit?
jagger27··on Show HN: Insteadofvery.com
They crafted a prompt that breaks out of the structure of word suggestions because this webapp is powered by an LLM.
jagger27··on Can turning office towers into apartments save downtowns?
If all that existed in those now dead downtown neighbourhoods were offices then of course they’d be dead with a significant disruption to work. What’s missing are still third places, and probably first places too.
jagger27··on Can turning office towers into apartments save downtowns?
The death of the third place is far more important than any impact remote work has had.
jagger27··on Apple introduces M4 chip
I’m not particularly scared of a 51% attack between the devices attached to my Apple ID. If my iPhone splits inference work with my idle MacBook, Apple TV, and iPad, what’s the problem there?
jagger27··on Takeaways from the Jane Street bond prospectus
I think in terms of things commonly measured on Earth we don't benefit much from the jump to megametres. The diameter of this planet is 12,742 km. Does it help much to say 12.7 megametres? Not really. Off planet the distances between objects are far beyond megametres. AU, parsec, and lightyears make much more sense.
jagger27··on Takeaways from the Jane Street bond prospectus
Well yeah, litres and grams are the base units. Just because 1ml is 1g of water doesn't change how SI prefixes work.
jagger27··on Air Force picks Anduril, General Atomics to develop unmanned fighter jets
The objectives of a land grabbing tyrant are what’s objective. You can’t be serious.

jagger27··on Chip Startup Rivos Raises More Than $250M to Tap AI Boom
Yeah I don’t think they’re opening a fab.

jagger27··on FCC Denies Starlink Low-Orbit Bid for Lower Latency
Fibre can go about 100 km without a repeater which in the grand scheme of things isn’t very far. Keep in mind that Starlink works best with a fibre base station inside of the coverage cone. A few of those stations in northern Quebec built next to existing cell towers gets you a lot of connectivity for cheap.
jagger27··on Framework: We don't want to have to make a printer, but wow
I assume this is a joke, but they did, and it is beloved.

jagger27··on Clicks – Physical keyboard for iPhone
Buried deep in the FAQ, you have to take it out of the case to use wired CarPlay on USB-C iPhones. That is a real bummer.

> Clicks for iPhone 15 Pro (and models that use USB-C) only support fast charging while Clicks is on your iPhone. At this time, the USB-C connector will not allow for both Clicks to be connected to the iPhone and allow for data and charging. This means using wired CarPlay or transfer data will require you to remove your iPhone from Clicks. Listening to music via Bluetooth and connecting to CarPlay wirelessly will still work with Clicks installed.

jagger27··on Tallest wooden wind turbine starts turning
I’m sure they’re still electrically grounded. I’d be shocked if they didn’t have lightning rods, not to mention all of the metallic innards like ladders and wiring that would have much lower resistance than the wood itself.
jagger27··on XCurl
Well, you’d need to adhere to the license terms of the MPL which generally requires changes to be shared back.

jagger27··on Portugal just ran on 100% renewables for six days in a row
Good question! At what cost do the externalities of fossil fuels come? What is the cost of inaction?

What are you trying to achieve with this banal line of questioning?

jagger27··on Bioregions 2023
In the interactive map linked upthread you can see further subdivisions, of which there are twelve.
jagger27··on Ask HN: If Google Workspace/Gsuite disappeared tomorrow, where would you go?
Totally reasonable choice.
jagger27··on Are chiplets enough to save Moore’s Law?
Yes, it totally counts and is indeed being vertically stacked on Ryzen products today. Cache takes up a huge portion of total die area and doesn’t hurt temperatures too much.

For now, AMD is using the technique to add more cache to their CPUs rather than moving all of it to another layer.

jagger27··on Hackers can steal cryptographic keys by video-recording power LEDs 60 feet away
For the LED side channel threat model, how expensive would it be to mitigate? Is it simply a matter of putting a few (more?) capacitors in the circuit?

A roll of electrical tape also seems like a reasonable mitigation in the field for the truly paranoid.

jagger27··on Apple announces multibillion deal with Broadcom to make components in the USA
So does Apple with the Mac Pro and a ton of historical pre-Intel Macs.
jagger27··on Where does ChatGPT fall on the political compass?
Are answers from humans deterministic?
jagger27··on “News is what somebody does not want you to print – all the rest is advertising”
The entire Shuttle program was worth it just for Hubble, in my opinion. It's hard to understate the effects on cosmology that piece of kit has had. Truly a Plato's Cave moment.

If it were up to me, I'd launch seven Hubble replacements named after each of the astronauts lost in Columbia.

jagger27··on NIST is announcing that SHA-1 should be phased out by Dec. 31, 2030
Cryptographers have a long history of doing this. Many of them broken. DES and WEP are two that immediately spring to mind.
jagger27··on Tesla FSD data is getting worse, according to beta tester self-reports
I wonder the same thing about monstrous pickup trucks in North America. They pose far more of a threat to public safety than any McLaren ever has.
jagger27··on Spotify CEO renews attack on Apple after Musk's salvo
It’s already environmentally worse to buy a newly built electric car than it is to keep your current gas one (or buy a used one).

The battery wear problem only makes this worse.

The real solution is of course to heavily reduce our reliance on cars but highways and stroads keep being built.
