jamescontrol··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Just make a fast, sturdy laptop, don’t keep making it lighter, and touch??
jamescontrol··on `123456' password used in Danish CPR data breach
Yes I completely agree. In the local news there was focus on which company it was and that the password was 123456.

Of all the things that failed for that leak, we should focus the LEAST on the password being insecure, and the company whom had their account misused, and the most at the other end of the long line of failures.

Why was there no monitoring on a company suddenly looking up 600 people a minute, why was this only discovered when they were making the invoice?? And how was it even possible to have a password that unsafe, no two factor auth etc etc etc.

jamescontrol··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
That sounds exactly like how an entry model should be?
jamescontrol··on Claude Code refuses requests or charges extra if your commits mention "OpenClaw"
That is a huge red-flag. While I understand that they will do some policing/censoring, this is way beyond what I would consider acceptable.

They can have a different price plan for agentic stuff, but these things where they “accidentally” whoops match on specific keywords and trigger extra usage charges is giving a evil-microsoft-vibe

jamescontrol··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
This is why I’m always wait as long as possible to update major versions, seems like there is fuckups big and small in every single major macOS update.
jamescontrol··on Mattermost restricted access to old messages after 10000 limit is reached
I looked at it for company chat and data, but those weird limits in functionality making in unusable was just too much, so them doing this too is not really surprising. Are they low on money?
jamescontrol··on iPhone Pocket
What a terrible name and the only reason I know it’s not an aprils fool is because it’s November.
jamescontrol··on U.S. investors, Trump close in on TikTok deal with China
How will this not be used by trump/republicans?
jamescontrol··on Meta Ray-Ban Display
Nope. I like the idea, but that is just still way too bulky, and just the fact that this is meta makes me want to steer clear.
jamescontrol··on A $20k American-made electric pickup with no paint, no stereo, no screen
This reminds me of the cars being produced in Russia at the moment…
jamescontrol··on Apple users are being locked out of their Apple IDs with no explanation
I think he means, what causes apple to trigger those notifications. I don’t remember ever seeing that prompt, at least not without myself doing some action to trigger it.
jamescontrol··on Almost every infrastructure decision I endorse or regret
Can you explain? Having a tool to detect changes and create a migration doesn’t sound bad? In a nutshell thats how django migrations work as well, which works really well.
jamescontrol··on LSD: Not Even Once
This is one of two reasons why I decided to not try anything, ever.

1. What if it’s the most amazing thing ever, like ADHD medication, what if you get insanely productive, and you then have to go back to being mediocre?

2. What if it triggers something bad. If I get 10% worse at focusing on a solving a problem?

Nope

jamescontrol··on Stray bullet kills English astrophysicist visiting United States
Less guns, less shootings, less gunshot deaths, it is that simple.

But how to get to less guns in a country like the US, that’s the real puzzle.

jamescontrol··on Amazon Kindles with 3G will start to lose cellular network access in December
I wish they would make a paperwhite with the long next page buttons on each side of the screen.
jamescontrol··on AMA: Ivan Kutskir, creator of Photopea
My guess is that if you have enough traffic, they will probably bend the requirements.
jamescontrol··on Ask HN: How have you cured your RSI?
Uh i have a little experience with this. I was an intern for a few months as part of my computer science degree, and sitting at a desk very not suites for office work, caused my right hand to start hurtig and having issues with tingeling like you describe. What ultimately worked for me was minimizing mouse usage by stopping pc gaming, switched to console gaming instead and stretching primarily my neck and shoulders, that really worked wonders. I was tested if my arms/hands had any permanent nerve damage, and fortunately I had not. Let me know if you have any questions.
jamescontrol··on Show HN: An open-source, self-hostable Heroku and Netlify alternative
To be fair, it’s quite often more expensive to self-host software than to use the sass/pass equivalent.
jamescontrol··on Brazil agency fines Apple $2M for not including charger in iPhone 12 box
“Hey, we usually give you this extra stuff, but now we removed it because we want to charge money for it instead, also the environment”
jamescontrol··on Bitwarden_rs: Unofficial Bitwarden compatible server written in Rust
Yes, but if a company does this, they are essentially killing themselves. They have presumably spent a lot of time creating a company, gain customers etc, whereas a single(?) maybe anonymous open source developer does not have that much to lose.
jamescontrol··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
Yeah, not surprisingly it’s not really that simple.. Some TVs just aren’t made for low latency, “game mode” enabled or not.
jamescontrol··on Vilified early over Covid-19 strategy, Sweden seems to have scourge controlled
Exactly, and news headlines praise them for not having the same second surge of cases as denmark right now. While 5800 people dies versus 650 in Denmark.
jamescontrol··on Russia opposition leader poisoned with Novichok
Why? It’s likely the reason why we have seen terrorist attacks where people drive into crowds of people. Cars and trucks is everywhere, its easily accessible. I would argue that the other way around is the dangerous assumption, that people will NOT use the easiest accessible means to hurt other people.
jamescontrol··on Show HN: GlitchTip. Open source error tracking, compatible with Sentry SDKs
Clicking any of the blog posts takes me to the installation guide.

I cant seem to find any feature overview? Id like to see screenshots and a nice overview of the features when browsing a project site like this

jamescontrol··on Hardcoded secrets, unverified tokens, and other common JWT mistakes
From pypaseto

“ This is still in early development. It has not been reviewed in a security audit yet, so please be aware that it is not expected to be ready for use in production systems.”

jamescontrol··on MacBook 16-inch Fan Noise (2019)
I went from a MacBook Pro 13” late 2013, to a 2019 16” and I have the same issue, running the exact same development setup, and I hear the fan much much more on the new machine. I know it’s faster etc so it can’t directly be compared, but still, I feel like I notice it now, every single day multiple times, where with the old 13 inch I never really noticed it at all.

*Same setup and dev env on new MacBook as on the old

jamescontrol··on 'Zen curtain' saves birds from hitting glass windows
Good point, a flagpole with a single rope can be pretty noisy.
jamescontrol··on Mass cellphone surveillance experiment in Spain
That sounds like the same thing.

What would you say if a SaaS told you that they store your password hashed, but that they can reverse it and get it out in plain text, if someone with authority asks?

jamescontrol··on What we did when our investors told us we weren't working hard enough
Yeah, I stopped reading at that point.
jamescontrol··on Open-Source Controller for the IKEA Bekant Standing Desk
We are shopping for desks right now, and we went to IKEA to look at standing/adjustable desks, and all of them were way too wobbley, so I agree.
