> The archaeologists published books with artifact photographs, but it's extremely difficult to find the books because they're out of print.

Oof, this so much - I've tracked down some early and mid 20th century books about a hobby and that was tough and expensive.

Wow does it? I've seen some stuff there that is a definite target for takedown that seems to have been untouched for a while.

yt-dlp has worked well for me, though it stops working periodically (or probably more likely Youtube makes a change to break it).

Internet Archive is one of the few tech causes that I donate to for this reason.

jamesfinlayson··on Canva CEO's letter to staff: Major restructuring affecting 22% of employees
I wouldn't be surprised if they were too big regardless - as an outsider looking in, I'm in Australia and up until a few months ago, LinkedIn jobs ads were full of seemingly always-open jobs ads to work at Canva (like 10 different roles open at a time, every time I looked across multiple months).
jamesfinlayson··on Patrick Stewart has died
Yes I was surprised to hear this as I thought Picard was reasonably recent.
jamesfinlayson··on GitHub saw 7.4B commits in Sep., adding 4M CPU cores+160 PB storage to keep up
Up until recently I was paying for data storage (I have a couple of repos with LFS) but the billing on that was changed recently so now I'm under the threshold for payment.

GitHub Enterprise maybe? For a while there it was more expensive than GitLab Enterprise.
jamesfinlayson··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
I was using StackOverflow pretty heavily in that time. I was doing PHP, Java and Groovy at the time, and PHP's documentation is pretty good. JavaDoc generated from source not so much...
jamesfinlayson··on GitLab Security Incident: Attempted Exploitation of CVE-2026-97229
Yeah I thought Jira at least was all built on AWS these days. I've never set up a Jira Cloud instance but I'd be surprised if you don't chose where your data lives.

Gosh I'm at a big company and I'm pretty sure all the self-hosted tools are only accessible through VPN-like tech anyway. The only truly public stuff is Jira, Confluence (which I assume it more to do with Atlassian's pricing of self-hosted) and Sharepoint.
jamesfinlayson··on Discord will soon let anyone find public server messages through Google
Yeah most the channels I'm in are meant to be forum replacements and it's terrible at that.

Chat room is fine though.

jamesfinlayson··on The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI
I had a similar thought earlier this year - competence is additive, incompetence is multiplicative.
jamesfinlayson··on IBM CEO says open weight models are now good and cheap on-prem
Might have been bought 12 months ago? Not sure when exactly but the impression I got was that they weren't too old.
jamesfinlayson··on IBM CEO says open weight models are now good and cheap on-prem
At work two different departments have it on their radar to do - apparently there are GPUs waiting to be used for something like it.
jamesfinlayson··on IBM CEO says open weight models are now good and cheap on-prem
Ironically one of the smaller places I've worked at tried to use an IBM product once - I'm still not clear on what it was meant to do or how it was better than any cheaper alternative, so I assume someone in leadership was fooled by a very impressive pitch.

Lots of work went into integration and it never went live.

jamesfinlayson··on Active incident at Dreamhost forcing password reset
Counting down until you can download again...

I do not miss those days.

jamesfinlayson··on Why I Am a Programmer
TI-84+ for me, though I think it was fairly similar to the TI-83.
jamesfinlayson··on There isn't an easy exploit for this PHP vulnerability
Yeah Slim is decent. Still getting regular updates by the looks of it.

Coincidentally a website for one of my hobbies was throwing stack trace one day and I was surprised to see it was using Slim.

jamesfinlayson··on Docker is weird
I was still hearing that in 2015.
jamesfinlayson··on MPs moving to restrict gambling ads in Canada
I'm in Australia and I've never worked for a bookie before, but certainly the ads are all targeted at men, and I remember seeing an app designed specifically for women looking to bet on horses (you entered your star sign, favourite colours etc, shook your phone and it chose some horse numbers).
jamesfinlayson··on Why Windows 11 still ships with Windows 95's memory manager hidden inside it
Yes me too! I've added it to my todo list to update some personal projects when I get the time.
jamesfinlayson··on There isn't an easy exploit for this PHP vulnerability
I think PHP is fine as long as you use a maintained framework, at least in my experience. I've used SlimPHP and Yii2 in the past and never had any security issues. I've worked on a few PHP sites that rolled their own frameworks which in retrospect was pretty iffy. One of them got yearly pen tests and there were never any issues found but the other two probably had some latent issues.
jamesfinlayson··on Why Windows 11 still ships with Windows 95's memory manager hidden inside it
I think Windows has had a much better memory allocator for some time now but it's behind a registry flag? I think there were issues with some applications so it shipped but turned off by default.

And now with AI answers...
jamesfinlayson··on PHP web runtimes (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619)
Yes. I had a project that was built with Elastic Beanstalk and was trying to move off it, but never got there. Amazon Linux and its package management was not great and I missed Debian/CentOS/Ubuntu.
jamesfinlayson··on PHP web runtimes (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619)
Yes I was hit by waiting for Elastic Beanstalk to update nginx for the succession of fixes. Wasn't fun being pestered by my security team.
jamesfinlayson··on GitLab critical patch release
Years ago I worked at a company that had a nightly cronjob for yum to apply security updates (with a couple of important exceptions that were handled manually). Always seemed very iffy to me for such a big company where downtime was very expensive.
jamesfinlayson··on The Future of CSS
Yeah with flexbox and fit-content/max-content is pretty fine now.
