jamesjguthrie··on Woman catches state police attaching tracker to her car, now they want it back
One of TPB founders was on Darknet Diaries recently saying this about Sweden. I wonder if it is true.

He literally did a video about Asus 4 days ago.

jamesjguthrie··on Linux on iPad
Through that website I found the iSH app and it’s amazing. It’s an Alpine Linux shell in an x86 emulator and it’s on the App Store.

I just installed gcc, Java, and Python on my iPad Pro. I can also install Ruby, PHP, etc. I can do most of my work now from my iPad without using Remote Desktop. Game changer. This app should be included on iPad Pro by default.

jamesjguthrie··on Ask HN: What did you purchase that measurably improved your quality of life?
My diet is terrible sometimes. I use my bidet (retrofitted toilet seat adapter) and then a quick wipe to ensure cleanliness and to partially dry my bum.

+1 for bidet.

jamesjguthrie··on Ask HN: Has CORS Solved Anything?
It's a necessity that when implemented improperly leaves a sizeable security hole.

I recently got a bug bounty for finding a CORS vulnerability and showing a proof of concept phishing site that uses all of the resources from the genuine origin. The site was accepting a wildcard origin whereas it should've used a whitelist.

jamesjguthrie··on Ask HN: Should remote worker salaries be based on location?
This is the comment I have agreed with most in this thread. The employer should pay based on what the employee is worth, not where they live IMO. Why is somebody in California worth more? Is it because they’re in the office? Are they doing a different job than the remote worker?
jamesjguthrie··on Ask HN: Were you in a computer user group, back in their heyday?
I really wanted to go to my local 2600 meetup after talking to them on IRC but my introversion/social-anxiety got the better of me.

Yeah downvote a guy looking for work. Thanks.
jamesjguthrie··on Don't Call Yourself a Programmer, and Other Career Advice (2011)
I need a job and can write code in nearly any language. Hire me?
jamesjguthrie··on Cars People Keep for 15 Years or More
Ah, ok. My mistake.
jamesjguthrie··on Cars People Keep for 15 Years or More
BMW should certainly be on that list considering European owners. Countless numbers of E46 and E39 models remain on the road here.
jamesjguthrie··on Ask HN: What technologies did you learn in 2018?
Various cryptocurrency related things like Solidity, ERC20 protocol.
jamesjguthrie··on Ask HN: How was your 2018?
2018 was great professionally, maybe not so great personally. I made more money this year than I have in the last 4 or 5 combined but my mental health has struggled.

I'll be taking the next few weeks off to TRY to relax, reflect, and gather my thoughts on the plan for 2019.

jamesjguthrie··on Ask HN: What are you planning to learn next year and why?
Mandarin to a level where I can read most texts on Chinese websites. Why? Mostly for fun.

jamesjguthrie··on Ask HN: What 5 software tools do you use most for work?
Research engineer

Every single working day for the past 3 or 4 years vim, terminal, C++, Chrome, and just recently CUDA.

jamesjguthrie··on Ask HN: Help Coinbase ate my $5,000.00
Coinbase is horrible. Their customer service is none existent. I waited 6 weeks to get my bank account verified so that I could make withdrawals to my bank. They say send at least 6 EUR to their Estonia account. I sent 10 EUR and it never got verified. I e-mailed numerous times, tweeted their support account, and tweeted the CEO. No response from an actual person at all.

Moved my ETH and LTC elsewhere and sold to a private buyer.

jamesjguthrie··on Ask HN: What linux distro should I start with?
I don't know the specs of your laptop but if it will run Windows 10 then just install the Windows Subsystem for Linux then you can have bash, gcc, all the gnu tools, etc. right there without relying on Linux as your OS.
jamesjguthrie··on RIP Apple MacBook
Unsure if satire or not as most of the points made are perfectly valid.
jamesjguthrie··on OS X is now macOS and gets support for Siri, auto unlock
Google I/O does.
jamesjguthrie··on How many of you use a Linux distro as your primary desktop OS?
Ubuntu, for the same reasons slashnull said for Debian.
jamesjguthrie··on HN. Let's share Twitter accounts
Mine is https://twitter.com/jamesjguthrie

I tweet mostly about uni and geeky stuff.

jamesjguthrie··on Ask HN: A good notebook for web development?
I'm using an HP Chromebook 14 running Ubuntu. I've got an external monitor for when I need it - hardly ever. Current resolution is 1776 x 999.

Some of the best things about it are the built in 3G modem with 2 years free internet, how light it is, how cheap it was even though it really looks very nice, and how quickly it boots.

jamesjguthrie··on QuickOffice Will Be Discontinued
Probably includes Google Apps, i.e. e-mail, etc.
jamesjguthrie··on [dead]
I have a verse for you.

"But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel." - 1 Timothy 5:8

jamesjguthrie··on [dead]
It's completely obvious to me. Because I have morals, I may feel sorry for homeless/sick/poor/other people/animals/countries, but it's illogical to me to give my money/care/efforts to any other than those that rely on me.
jamesjguthrie··on [dead]
The second part means that if I have enough money that I could potentially give it to a charity, I won't. I will buy my children something, or I will help my friends in need.

> Why not focus on yourself only? Because I will help those important to me, that I care about, and/or are my responsibility.

Homeless people and charities for every animal, nationality, and disease in this world, can not ALL be my responsibility. Another point that I think about a lot, I can not justify giving to just one charity and not to all charities. So I give to none.

I realise that my opinions may be unpopular but I have no problem with that.

jamesjguthrie··on [dead]
I don't give to charities or homeless people. I live by the old saying, "Charity begins at home."

If I can afford to help strangers then I can afford to help my family and friends, who are more important to me.

jamesjguthrie··on Trashing Chromebooks
Agreed. I use an HP Chromebook 14 with an Ubuntu chroot as my main machine, and I love the Chromebook, but I have no love for Chrome OS.

It's just too damn limited to be appreciable.
