jareklupinski··on Need for Speed Underground 2 online in the browser
> As a developer/publisher you either provide a product available for purchase for a reasonable price (not larger than release price, adjusted for inflation) OR you are not allowed to take down game preservation efforts.

i worked at a place where to get anything done, you had to demonstrate "Business Impact": is what you're about to do going to actually help revenue? if not, move on to something that does

i agree, a suit should only be taken seriously if the company can demonstrate that they are actively losing revenue because of the game preservation effort, otherwise toss it in the bin

why are big name businesses wasting money on litigating against small sites that dont actually impact them anyway? perhaps if they knew that their lawyers were wasting time chasing frivolous suits and actually costing their company's good will, while not actually giving their business impact...

its not a definite, but it seems that the projects that get taken down the quickest are the ones that try to run ads / monetize the work

the people that just put out a cute site and stay low tend not to attract lawyers

> I am also tired of people still looking suspicious at me for not having instagram, snap or tiktok or use whatsapp, it's like I dropped out of society,

social media was designed to appear like it is society, endorsed by the same people who _made_ the society

i think its all just an illusion to make us work harder :(

jareklupinski··on OpenSSH 10.6p2 has been released with a workaround for a critical vulnerability
i guess if i have some sort of internet access (otherwise why would i be worrying about passwords), i'd set up a new account(s) and message those friends
jareklupinski··on Starfall – Affordable, routine access to microgravity
> it is economically unfeasible to manufacture or mine anything in space if it needs to be transported down or up

leave it in space then; massive star ships shouldnt need to come down to planets anyway

> You wake up in a strange place. Something happened. Everything's gone. No wallet/keys/smartphone/tablet/laptop.

at this point the _last_ thing i care about is my email.

where am i? am i ok? how are my friends/loved ones?

once those are in place, it becomes clearer how to get back to "normal"

jareklupinski··on AI is forcing us to pay off 40 years of technical debt
currently following some other posts made here on HN with a similar goal; inspired honestly by that mini-firmware project a few days ago

nothing i'm proud enough to open to the world yet, but my personal public server will be my first deployment, and will definitely "Show HN" then too :)

jareklupinski··on AI is forcing us to pay off 40 years of technical debt
personally have started going the other way: AI-assisted microkernels, and only the programming that is actually needed for the problem at hand

my webserver never needed a million lines of code just to pass bytes to other people

jareklupinski··on Katamari Damacy but it's The Met collection
ah i guess that could be rolled into the level select: scaling the ball progresses through the collections, making it a linear experience, but one that could be more.... curated :D

jareklupinski··on DiscImageStudio: burn visible artwork onto CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs
there was an inkjet printer that had a special tray for CD/DVDs

the intent was to add artwork to the discs, but if you put a copper-plated board in there, printed on a circuit board, and etched away the area left behind, you'd be almost there :)

drilling holes and thru plating is my least favorite step tho

jareklupinski··on Voynich Manuscript
i got the Codex Seraphinianus as a gift a while back

its fun to "unfocus" my mind while flipping through the pages, pretending the things inside might even be real. got an idea for a clock design that way once

it got so bad, even their _free online games_ needed to authenticate using a bespoke popup where you clicked in your pin number

jareklupinski··on Anthropic takes steps to block Claude from reverse-engineering video games
same as self-hosting email/webservers though, you dont need world-class hardware for personal projects. frontier models may be more capable but a smaller model can just as easily work through a project you break down for it
jareklupinski··on Anthropic takes steps to block Claude from reverse-engineering video games
i've been running DeepSeekV4 flash but looking at the other models being suggested around, best part is switching to test has 0 cost :)

i felt like commercials LLMs were "good enough" for my needs about 2-3 generations ago, so this clicked into my work/life needs perfectly

i got them right before they went up in price, but honestly, for the ability to know that i wont have my thinking "questioned"... priceless
