jgwil2··on US Democrats Win Enough Seats Nationwide to End Presidential Electoral College
Maybe, maybe not. Presumably the courts would decide that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitutionality_of_the_Natio...
jgwil2··on BYD sold more EVs last month than the US did all quarter
No good place to charge in San Francisco?
jgwil2··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
> His tone is the least of the problems.

I agree with that, but it's still shocking to me that somebody in such an important role can sound so unprofessional.

jgwil2··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
Really not the message nor the style of good leadership. I don't want my CEO to talk like an eighth-grader.
jgwil2··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
I think you've got cause and effect quite mixed up: smoking became a social faux pas precisely because people learned how bad it was for them.
jgwil2··on Desire to Move Permanently to U.S. at New Low
When somebody like Mamdani (obviously not him since he's not a native) wins a presidential primary maybe I'll concede your point. All recent Democratic nominees have resembled the "normal," centrist candidates of yore; only the Republican party has adopted the intolerant, "theatrical" third-world style of politics so far (in the figure of Trump), and again, natives have always voted for him at higher rates than naturalized citizens.
jgwil2··on Desire to Move Permanently to U.S. at New Low
Is that why white South Africans are being welcomed as refugees?
jgwil2··on Desire to Move Permanently to U.S. at New Low
But this government was voted for by natives at a higher rate than by naturalized citizens. It seems odd to blame them for this.
jgwil2··on Things to know when you get cancer
Just because the second opinions did not disagree with the first, it does not necessarily follow that they were a waste of time.
jgwil2··on Sorry we made you grind LeetCode
I like how the names of these problems are italicized as though they're the titles of short stories. Really it's just become a canon we're expected to have memorized rather than a test of problem-solving skills.
jgwil2··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
This is meaningless without a denominator. How much has international tourism increased in those years? What percentage of international tourists visited the US before and after 2001?
jgwil2··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Yeah the French word could also be translated as "the foreigner." It's an interesting demonstration of the challenge of translation; even a one-word title presents an ambiguity that has to be resolved.
jgwil2··on I'm the mom in that viral Giants clip. Let me tell you about my husband
Eh, when I was a kid violence was physical by definition. That distinction seems to be getting lost such that the phrase "physical violence" is no longer redundant. But the new usage is figurative.
jgwil2··on Unknown number of Texas voter registrations went unprocessed due to DPS error
The weapon, ostensibly, in a democracy, is the ability to vote your leaders out.
jgwil2··on Claude Opus 5.5
What's the blast radius we can expect when these changes land?
jgwil2··on Claude Opus 5.5
That's a different phrase. "Pace yourself" is reflexive; "pacing the frontier" has the frontier as an object, but in that sense it only means to set the speed, nothing to do with slowing down.
jgwil2··on Spain orders blocks on Archive.today and its mirrors
What reason does he have to fear for his life?
jgwil2··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
> paying far more for healthcare by way of taxes than any American does

This is blatantly false. Americans spend 18% of GDP on healthcare, while most European countries are around 10%.

jgwil2··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Onerous?
jgwil2··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Their population is 1.4 billion and falling.
jgwil2··on Astra for Coding: Why Are We Doing This Again?
1. I'm not sure what you're advocating here that wasn't already a best practice in software engineering.

2. This is a real benefit.

3. Not sure I follow, can you expand on this?

4. You don't have to be a perfectionist but you should still understand what it's doing.

5. Yes, this is hard and related to item 4.

In any case, you're not really contradicting OC since their comment was specifically referring to "the people who say they no longer read any code," and that's not what you're advocating at all (see point 5).

jgwil2··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
I wish more companies would just focus on webapps. It's infuriating how many services try to push an app on you when it's completely unnecessary. The other day I went to a restaurant that had an app. Not a fast food chain, a nice full-service place. No, I'm not going to download an app to order dinner.
jgwil2··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
This is just bad training. Water should be brought out and refilled without asking.
jgwil2··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
This is opinion, not information. Of course people's opinions will conflict.
jgwil2··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
If all you want to do is remote into your desktop, Neo seems like overkill. Why not just get a $200 Chromebook and save yourself $500?
jgwil2··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study

His annual compensation was over $10 million.

jgwil2··on The End of Mathematics
The purpose of having a human look at LLM output is not just to verify correctness but also to understand a system. The parallel to math is that the value of a proof is not just the verification of a statement but also the working out of the mathematics required to establish that truth.
jgwil2··on "Clean" Code, Horrible Performance (2023)
I stand corrected. Still I'd recommend it as a followup for anyone intrigued by this post as it shows a real world, non-trivial example of removing abstractions in order to improve performance.
