jkscm··on The surprisingly complex journey to text-selectable client-side generated PDFs
It's also on amazon https://www.amazon.com/Exploration-Map-Migrations-Encounters...

There is a kindle version (which would be closer to epub than pdf) but it just is even worse than a pdf and the authors also include the reason for that:

> Due to the complex integration of images and text, this DK eBook has been formatted to retain the design of the print edition. As a result, all elements are fixed in place, but can easily be enlarged by using the pinch-to-zoom function.

EPUB is simply not ready for complex layouts.

jkscm··on The surprisingly complex journey to text-selectable client-side generated PDFs
Just look at examples like this: https://www.google.de/books/edition/Exploration_Map_by_Map/s...

You will realize that saying "PDFs should be only for printing" is a vast oversimplifcation for the requirements people have for different kinds of documents.

jkscm··on The surprisingly complex journey to text-selectable client-side generated PDFs
slighlty disagree with this. A fixed page layout has it's own advantages. The reason we have more high quality pdf readers than epub readers is probrably connected to the format itself. PDF readers usally are more more feature complete when it comes to stuff like annotations too.

As a side note: You seem to agree with your parent poster since you mention “well-educated people” which are most likely richer.

jkscm··on Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper (1807)
> The media exists so that the narrative can be owned, manipulated

Thats also true for anyone else who is not part of the media.

> All news is fake. It's purely a matter of degrees.

That does not lead to the conclusion that other sources are right.

Another interesting problem would be the generation of filler pictures (I don't know the correct term). Normally there is a person who draws keyframes at a much lower framerate. Other animators then fill in the frames between to increase the framerate.

jkscm··on Java 8’s new Optional type doesn't solve anything
Using get() is just bad style and so is returning null where you could return Collections.emptyList().

jkscm··on Cooking Patterns
But the recipe is the solution, the finely crafted source code, that we have to deploy. Cooking may be more similar to DevOps than software engineering.
jkscm··on Testosterone is the drug of the future
Or it could be a coincidence since the number of test subjects was 1.

I like how the examine.com article sums it up:

> Although 'natural' (non-supplemental) methods of increasing testosterone are pretty weak and unlikely to build muscle mass, they tend to be related to pro-sexual effects (particularly libido) and exerting dominance

This does not explain the differences between man and woman. Especially because infection chances are higher for women. Assuming that males and females have the same number of average sexuall contacts.
jkscm··on The Rise and Fall of the Lone Game Developer
Tell me if I missed it, but the chance to make a living as an independent game has increased, didn't? Companies get as big as their market will allow it. Saying no one can make a living from games anymore because of the big companies is like saying there can be no more start-ups because of Google and Facebook.

The gaming market is big and fast. It's fine if you don't want to run anymore but there are a lot more other people in the race who have a chance of seeing the finishing line.

jkscm··on Applying an experimental procedure to fall in love
> Let me acknowledge the ways our experiment already fails to line up with the study. First, we were in a bar, not a lab. Second, we weren’t strangers. Not only that, but I see now that one neither suggests nor agrees to try an experiment designed to create romantic love if one isn’t open to this happening.

Her story is just an illustration to the research paper she linked to. Please stay away from commenting if you didn't read the article.

jkscm··on EFF asks for the right to revive “abandoned” online games
Correct me if I am wrong but the statement "game’s audiovisual content is primarily stored on the developer’s server and not in the client" is not true for any mmo.

3D models and audio are saved to the clients disk. It's the state of the persistent world that is stored on the server.

There are many threads here discussing the influence of genetic factors but this is not what the article is about. Genetic factors are not mentioned in the article. One of the last paragraphs states other possible factors explicitly:

> Her next step is to find out what factors contribute to being an expert on an instrument, playing field, in the classroom or at work. She hopes to investigate such factors as basic abilities, age when starting to learn the skill, confidence, positive or negative feedback, self-motivation and the ability to take risks.

I think the whole nature vs nurture discussion in relation to intellectual aptitude is shaped to much by peoples own biases which leads them to ignore the overwhelming evidence for the importance of nurture/culture/eduction/...

Maybe it's easier to believe some people are born smart.

Why do you show different exercises everyday? Technique is important especially for bodyweight exercises.

How can you call it "HackerBody" when bodyweight exercises are so much less effective than Weight lifting?

But maybe our intuition is wrong here:

"Hundhausen and colleagues found that how the visualizations were used matters a lot. For example, using visualizations in lecture demonstration had little impact on student learning. But having students build their own visualizations had significant impact on those students’ learning." p.118

jkscm··on Swiftkey Keyboard Android is now free
Same for me. Especially because I could never find a competing keyboard that handles multiple languages so well. Only minuum (http://minuum.com/) could be an alternative for me since it is great to have more screen space.
