jmhammond··on KOReader
The latest generation paperwhite (“PW6”) and color readers use MTP rather than acting as mass storage devices.

I use OpenMTP rather than Amazon’s software, and that works fine for me.

jmhammond··on Browser-Based QBasic Environment
I look forward to the day you release this! Watching your teaser gave me lots of nostalgia for the BASIC days of my youth.
jmhammond··on Back to Kagi
Also, people in North America who don’t have tech jobs exist. I make pretty good money as a teacher, and it’s still significantly less than many of the parent posters salaries.
jmhammond··on I started a “dirt notebook”
Thanks! This is really neat
jmhammond··on I started a “dirt notebook”
Can you share the shortcut link? That sounds very useful

And if you like the Pentel GraphGear 500, you might want to check out the Pentel Sharp Kerry -- it's metal but with a post-able cap which makes it very pocketable.

jmhammond··on I'm a USB-C Maximalist
For what an anecdote’s worth, I have the same rechargeable Norelco razor that I’ve had going on 17 years. Same nicd battery it came with; gets recharged about once every three weeks. I think it’ll relive me.
jmhammond··on The worthlessness of Vitamin D is mildly exaggerated
In case the author is here, you can find the Garland & Garland (1980) article on sci-hub.

And if link is allowed https://sci-hub.ru/https://doi.org/10.1093/ije/9.3.227

jmhammond··on Updates to GitHub Copilot interaction data usage policy
Mine was defaulted to disabled. I’m on the Education pro plan (academic), so maybe that’s different than personal?
jmhammond··on I stopped following the news
I subscribe to this model as well, with the caveat that I try to only look at local news to my city and my field. I can’t do anything about the nonsense at a national level, I can do my part in the local context.
jmhammond··on Chuck Klosterman on why we've never actually seen a real football game
That was a really fun experience. Thank you for sharing!
jmhammond··on Zotero 8
My understanding then is the answer is “probably no.”
jmhammond··on Zotero 8
I do both. I have the Zotero account for the library and webdav for the pdf files.
jmhammond··on Hypnosis with Aphantasia
I didn’t find out it was a thing until I was 38 or 39. And yes, I daydream. But it’s not like watching a movie. I don’t know how to describe it besides my mind wanders and there’s a narrative.
jmhammond··on UNC System President Peter Hans confirms all syllabuses will be public records
I’ll take the bait. I’m guessing you don’t pay state tax in Kansas, so you don’t pay my salary. I’m totally down with anyone in the state reading my stuff, though.
jmhammond··on Show HN: Hephaestus – Autonomous Multi-Agent Orchestration Framework
I mean more to the name, Hephaestus did a lot in the Horizon Zero Dawn project…
jmhammond··on Some people can't see mental images
I think it’s because you can find supports to help you learn.

I’ve been teaching math for almost 18 years at this point, and only a couple years ago learned that I lean towards aphantasia. Back in high school, geometry was HARD. Calc 3 was HARD. It was presented as visualize and imagine, and I tried my best. It just turns out other people could do that, and the fuzzy thing thing (or, more commonly, the ‘bulleted list of information’ that make up my imagination) was not “normal.”

If I’d known this (and my teachers were in a position to also know this), then maybe we’d spend more time with external visual models (what Geogebra now does for us, for example) to help me out.

Now that I teach future high school math teachers, it’s definitely something I talk about to normalize “not everyone can see in their mind.”

jmhammond··on Kevo app shutdown
This made my day. Thank you for this Lovecraftian horror!
jmhammond··on Digg.com is back
I have a trans kid at 15. Living their best life. Knew the kid from day one (today’s their 15th birthday). Guess what? It’s all their choice, suggestion, etc. While I’d prefer their original name (I mean, I chose that for a reason), everything else is obvious and right in retrospect.

Instead of just /watching/ a neighbor, you could /be/ a neighbor and get to know them. You might feel differently about your preconceptions when you actually know the human.

jmhammond··on Face it: you're a crazy person
> For example, in grad school I worked with lots of undergrads who thought they wanted to be professors. Then I’d send ‘em to my advisor Dan, and he would unpack them in 10 seconds flat. “I do this,” he would say, miming typing on a keyboard, “And I do this,” he would add, gesturing to the student and himself. “I write research papers and I talk to students. Would you like to do those things?”

I’m a professor, and I’d only add gesturing to represent teaching and banging head on a table to represent committee meetings.

But I freaking love my job.

jmhammond··on Rotring 600 Ballpoint Pen
Imagine writing smoothly like butter as clouds part and angels sing.

Unfortunately, it’s not water safe, but it’s great. My favorite feature is that it dries REALLY quickly, so I can left-hand without smudging.

jmhammond··on Open Letter on the Need to Modernize Mathematics
Sharing this letter that I was sent (and I co-signed) via the research in undergraduate mathematics education group of the MAA.

I thought this might get some traction among those who are actually using the mathematics and hire the students whose education we'd like to improve.

jmhammond··on How I Use Kagi
You probably have an adblocker running. I also did this test with ‘Canada eta’ and got the expected result on top. But when I reloaded the page without my content blockers, the official Canadian website was more than 1.5 iPad screen scrolls down.

jmhammond··on CVE-2024-9956 – PassKey Account Takeover in All Mobile Browsers
Microsoft is using “like” in this case to be a simile.

The passkey is being compared to a digital version of a physical key, the brass object used to unlock doors.

They might be referring to an on screen button.

Check out the new voice transcription feature in iOS 18. On my SE 2022 (very much not high-end), I have a good-size record/pause button on screen.

After you’re done with the voice recording, it gives you a transcription of what you spoke.
