jmspring··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
And they turn it on by default. If Steve Jobs were around, it would have either worked better or it would have been sold better and those in charge kicked in the nuts. Apple's UX team SUCKS these days.
jmspring··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
It not only removed the F-keys, but it was not as responsive as a keyboard and a misplaced finger did something you may not want. Personally I HATED the thing.
jmspring··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
I think this can easily be seen in the introduction of windows into iPad OS. I hate when the wrong motion creates a window from what I was working with. And this is on the 11" pro.
jmspring··on Start Doing Graph Theory
Oh this was a descent into past memories. I had the pleasure to take Graph Theory at UC Santa Cruz with Gerhard Ringel [1] way back when. Excellent instructor with some great stories.

jmspring··on New iMac with M6
My M1 Max MBP has 64 gig, still runs well. I understand memory has skyrocketed in price, but Apple has been hamstringing the max ram in their MBPs it seems for awhile.
jmspring··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
I think it's a role that makes sense. Solution architects and pre-sales engineers are a role that has been sorta defined in the past. Working directly with customers gives much more market insight than PMs that don't actually ever talk to a customer.
jmspring··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Actually, I think there are areas of interest that come up in large companies. Microsoft started the equivalent of an FDE organization about 12 years ago. It was interesting to have the freedom to build and grow an organization from about 20 to 800 people. Working with customers and product teams to help get direct customer feedback to help evolve products was interesting. Now, 12 years later, FDEs are sort of the current buzzy role.

jmspring··on eMudhra ignored Mozilla Root investigation deadline; blames social media
Things have improved to a point, but there are still certain stereotypes by country/region that stand - general outsourcing firms are amongst the worst; targeted specialists can be great (I've worked with such in multiple geos).

My comment was somewhat flip, but I wasn't surprised when I saw what and where.

jmspring··on eMudhra ignored Mozilla Root investigation deadline; blames social media
I hadn't heard of this Intermidate CA provider. I guess I've been a bit lax on keeping myself updated in the PKI space. That said, given the country it is based, it doesn't surprise me about the general lack of quality and seriousness about what they did and how it's been exposed.

I may get downvotes, but this just screams amateur hour.

jmspring··on Investor-owned utilities charge 23% more for electricity than public providers
The infrastructure and lines are generally shared, yes.
jmspring··on Investor-owned utilities charge 23% more for electricity than public providers
I will disagree - the coop was actually cheaper than the town near by that was PG&E direct. Also the stability was significantly better than PG&E alone - after the Camp Fire - PGE got extremely paranoid and had frequent shutoffs in the area. The Coop flipped to the backup provider. I think in nearly 9 years of living there, the number of power outages were under 20, the number of extended ones were like 3.
jmspring··on Investor-owned utilities charge 23% more for electricity than public providers
My last two energy providers have been coops. In north eastern California, the coop had one feed from PG&E and the other from a company out of Reno (I forget the name). It ended up being cheaper and more stable than PG&E itself.
jmspring··on Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash
I've had success with airbnb in the past. Lately, however, I am using booking.com more. AirBnB isn't reliable to handle issues. My wife, her kid and some friends tried a few places a couple of years ago. Most were fine, I had to book them a hotel in Italy from the US (they were tired and not really super focused) because 2 adult and 2 teen women felt extremely uncomfortable and the "room" wasn't as described.
jmspring··on I built a drone with only one motor [video]
Is there a way to track what's going on in the battle bots community? It was pretty cliche, but battle bots was fun to watch in the 90s/2000s.
jmspring··on Tesla Roadster
If you look at Tesla pricing and delivery, prices usually well above what was originally talked about - capability/etc a whole different thing with the cyber truck. The 3 engine "cyberbeast" was originally pushed at about 1/2 it's price 8ish years ago.
jmspring··on Apple routed a graphite pipe through the iPhone Duo's hinge to dissipate heat
The Face ID bug that caused a reboot on iPhone 18 pros was a clear example that they put little quality control into software.
jmspring··on Muse Spark Open
Why didnt thry include OpenAI or Anthropic models? I get they were comparing open weights.
jmspring··on Celebrating 70 Years of Fortran
An ex got me "A Fortran Coloring Book" years ago while I was working with astronomers. I was still in grad school and it gave me an excuse to learn it.
jmspring··on 900-Page Pre-Pantone Guide to Color from 1692 (With Complete High-Res Scan)
I swear in the early 2000s there was a company that was carefully scanning old manuscripts like this one. I just can't recall the company name.

I love this sort of work.

jmspring··on Amazon introduces a redesigned Kindle family
Not really an Amazon fan, but Kindle Unlimited is something I use a lot. I read 3-4 books a month (sometimes more). Not all great literature, but a way to relax in the evening or on vacation.

I like the warmth setting of more current paperwhites.

jmspring··on The Board Game of the Alpha Nerds (2014)
In the East Bay (CA), there was a multiline bbs that a family wrote and ran. One of the online games they had was diplomacy - ascii graphics. They also sold the game at their office for members. My first online intro, friends and I played before. This was in the 80s.
jmspring··on Suspension of the de minimis administrative exemption for imports $800 or less
It’ll likely be a rep hit but - I’d argue livestock imports and booze imports over pharma would be Kash’s interest.

jmspring··on Oracle’s 6am layoff emails hit staff amid new wave of cuts
Happen to agree. But to the comment above, yes, it's rack and stack but I suspect Oracle's legion of lawyers can put some sort of spin on this.
jmspring··on Amazon vs. Perplexity – U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Amazon has generally been a shadow of itself. Fakes and less than reputable options. An opensource / legit sourced marketplace could be useful.
jmspring··on Spaceships (Reverse Asteroid)
Nicely done. Took a minute to figure out.
jmspring··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
So will this happen with existing accounts? I'm ratcheting back from Pro as it is.
jmspring··on The Real Luxuries In Life
The school year, across the US used to be labor day to Memorial Day. No longer the case. My step daughter’s former district started at the beginning of August, her freshman year of college last weekend.

At least here in the states, districts because they pay teachers shit, are getting pushback to add required meetings and learning on the end of the day. Instead there are “short days” for the kids.

It’s no longer an issue for me, but seriously annoying how little k-12 are actually in school these days.
