jonathandeamer··on Finger: the 1971 social network that never died
"The Charted Public Fingerverse" does a pretty good job at this! https://640kb.neocities.org/fingerverse/

Was definitely an inspiration for lookit. And yes, a search engine would be cool!

jonathandeamer··on Finger: the 1971 social network that never died
Nice to see this here today. A number of hosts the article mentions are on the startpage of lookit, a finger client I've been building: happynetbox, plan.cat, thebackupbox's finger webring, etc.

The start page exists because finger has no discovery layer. finger @host lists users. lookit makes that list selectable, so you can wander a server instead of querying one address at a time.

I just released a v0.2 beta, feedback welcome: https://github.com/jonathandeamer/lookit/releases/tag/v0.2.0...

jonathandeamer··on Developer Bootcamps are Expensive. Learn Python Online with a Mentor for $99.
This looks like a good online Rails course with the option of mentorship http://learn.thoughtbot.com I keep seeing promoted tweets advertising it.
jonathandeamer··on Ask HN: I want to start a clothing company.
Assuming your designs are printable, why not test out some of your designs on a community like Threadless? Allows you to "launch early and iterate" and get early "user" feedback with minimal financial risk. It'll allow you to gauge the popularity of different designs without having to actually have the clothes made.

As there's already an established community around Threadless, it might also be a good way to build an initial following for your brand/style.

jonathandeamer··on Ask HN: What is the best city to start a start-up in Europe?
Great thread! I have worked (and continue to work) for a handful of startup-type companies in Liverpool (NW England). I don't have a wide enough experience of European cities to say it's the best place to start a business, but it's a great place to live and relatively cheap to rent office space and similar. Historically there's been a good amount of public sector funding available (although whether that will continue under the coalition government remains to be seen!), but of course there isn't an "VC ecosystem" equivalent to that of London.

All that said, there are amazing, interesting and fun people here doing cool things with tech, and there's the beginnings of a great scene. I love it :-)

But my main reason for posting was to ask: is there a directory of some sort compiling answers to questions like this for cities globally, detailing the sort of recruitment and funding opportunities available, as well as what sort of startups are already based there? Almost like a "Crunchbase for cities"...might have to think about knocking such a thing together if it doesn't already exist!

jonathandeamer··on Ask HN: is there a lower-volume HN feed?
Sorry, I meant feed as in RSS...that content-wise, those are exactly what I'm looking for. Just wanna get 'em in Google Reader!
jonathandeamer··on Ask HN: is there a lower-volume HN feed?
(And my Googling skills have failed me...)
jonathandeamer··on Failin.gs
Formspring, but in a different context. And that's no bad thing.

jonathandeamer··on A cool way of finding a good web developer
They could do with a proof-reading ninja..."forfill": http://bit.ly/forfill

Don't mean to be petty, but that sort of attention to detail is really important as far as I'm concerned.

jonathandeamer··on Ask HN: How do you consume Hacker News?
I'm a big fan of this, mainly because of the top 5 filter, but also because I tend to use Twitter as a centralised hub for much of my media consumption, rather than visiting different websites, so it suits this use.

I have a "reading material" Twitter list set up, including @newsycombinator, and I regularly scan this for this to add to Instapaper, which I then generally read when travelling.

Admittedly, the problem with this is that it means I'm a less active participant in the community here than I'd like to be.

jonathandeamer··on Logos of the candidate cities for the 2016 Olympics
Despite the criticisms of some of these logos (in this thread and elsewhere), I don't think I would be as embarrassed to be from any of these places as the London 2012 logo makes me feel http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/10/All_London_201...
jonathandeamer··on Tumblr lead developer on running a popular blog
Fair point - in fact, I suggested on my blog that it may be a bit simplistic (or a confusion of correlation/causation) to simply say "my blog is successful because I stopped trying to make it successful": http://ashotofjd.com/post/168062040/marco-i-now-have-a-decen...
jonathandeamer··on PyMag looking for startups using Python. Anyone?
I said it might be the sort of thing you guys were up for http://twitter.com/doughellmann/status/3451664681
jonathandeamer··on DailyBooth (YC S09), 4chan and the importance of context
DailyBooth could easily switch on anonymity - there's nothing technically difficult about that. But 4chan has a culture that allows for anonymous posts, which is why I think the context of a community is often more important in defining a service that technology.

Admittedly, individual feeds do change the way users behave a lot...but I'd argue that this feeds into changing the context that the tech is place in ;-)

jonathandeamer··on DailyBooth (YC S09), 4chan and the importance of context
I partly disagree. Of course, networking, contacts and "who you know" are important. And DailyBooth were undoubtedly helped in getting TC coverage by the YC connection. But that's PR, which is different to creating a compelling product in and of itself, which is where I believe context and positioning (eg. link shortener for bacon) is important.
jonathandeamer··on DailyBooth (YC S09), 4chan and the importance of context
Thanks, that was a pretty basic error of me to make! Corrected the post...but I hope the rest of my insight still stands ;-)
