jronald··on Launch HN: Overwatch (YC S22): OSINT platform for cyber and fraud risk
For the first SOC2, I don't hold this against a startup (I appreciate they are going through the efforts this early). Would want to see it become 6 month/1 year as the program matures. A vendor like this is low risk (aggregator of "public" information, limited data sharing, etc).

I have all sorts of issues with Vanta/Drata "compliance as a service" tools, but adequate for something like this, at this point in time.

You've done a great job proving it yourself - despite only consuming 2000 calories, you were still gaining weight. Unless you weren't counting anything aside from soylent (drinking, snacks, etc) you were past your maintenance consumption.
jronald··on Amazon EBS Update – New Elastic Volumes Change Everything
That's one example and matches a use case where AWS / "Cloud" providers may not be ideal. Hybrid setups with external CDN can mitigate some of this as well.

You started with general pricing arguments with hostile language without providing numbers to support - making generalizations without that data is useless, right? How is a reader supposed to take those statements? It leads to using your experience statement (I offer high performance, managed, HA hosting to selected clients) to make judgements on the comment.

The we should be anybody bothering to read this comment chain - who wouldn't be interested in seeing AWS' lack of value in your use case / competitors that succeed? Having done migrations to and from AWS for past employers, this would definitely interest me in the least.

Your making value decisions based on expertise in your existing delivery methods and trying to map them 1-1 to aws features, that may or may not map 1-1. You keep disparaging aws' pricing (stupidly expensive, serious premium), without providing an alternative/baseline.

Again, if you have numbers and not broad statements we'd appreciate them.

jronald··on Amazon EBS Update – New Elastic Volumes Change Everything
You're charging people to manage their environments (providing expertise) and complaining about needing to develop additional skills to do so efficiently.

If you have the data with price/performance comparisons, I'd think this is something the rest of us would be interested in.

I have the Developer edition of the older 13 - its a 13" display in closer to an 11" form. The 13" and 15" have really tiny bezels to hit their dimensions, with the new 15.6" being 14" wide.

The 13" developer edition was close enough to perfect for me with the 1920x1080 display, battery life takes a hit with the 4k screens. Getting a 15" this time around, but expect delays on the developer edition, they usually launch a few months after the regular 15" while they sort new drivers.

We're testing Hashicorp's vault - why share system passwords when you can use OTPs provided on demand? Its still early, but looks promising to me.
jronald··on Docker: Not Even a Linker
So I've recently reimplemented some of our applications service dependencies in docker for the main reasons of mitigating dependency issues and allowing for for developer local consistency.

I fully admit this is deferring solving these issues fully (solr 1.4.1 really?) but it has allowed for minimizing the issues the existing backlog was causing us. Arguably its also brought more consistency to our environments vs the chef/puppet/hand rolled management tools. We could have used these tools with a different process to achieve similar results though.

Offtopic, but having gone through that recently I found amethyst to have been a great free tiling window manager.
jronald··on My notes on Amazon's EC2 Container Service, aka Docker on AWS
I'll try and keep an eye out for the blog post - I'm working with building a CD pipeline w/ jenkins, docker, and node to Beanstalk, and I'm sure we're doing things inefficiently.
jronald··on Karl Ove Knausgaard’s ‘My Struggle: Book 4’
You may want to take it up with his publisher(s), as all books authored by him on amazon have 'Knausgaard' as the spelling. I imagine if it was an issue to him (which is the only person I'd be worried about it offending) it would have been addressed before now?

Also kudos to amazon for handling the query 'Knausgård' solidly - this may be common place but its the first I've needed it. 'http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dap...

Edit: I would add that I'd like to know more about how cases like this would be handled automatically - account lookup would need to find both spellings depending on how it was entered? Are the extended characters allowed in usernames? I've seen forum confusion where accounts were spoofed by slightly off unicode letters, ex. 'Α' (Greek U+0391) and 'A' (Latin, U+0041).

jronald··on Workers Seeking Productivity in a Pill Are Abusing A.D.H.D. Drugs
I used Adrafinil before Modafinil and the effects were similar - I was taking 350mg of adrafinil for similar effects to a 200mg Modafinil. I did go as high as ~650mg of Adrafinil, and it definitely gave a stronger effect than just preventing / clearing tiredness.
jronald··on Workers Seeking Productivity in a Pill Are Abusing A.D.H.D. Drugs
I'd disagree with it being far more "powerful" than Adderall, having been prescribed both at one time or another. They're effects on me are quite different:

Adderall - I seem to focus on anything I needed to without resistance, similar to how I would focus on something I enjoy. The side effects on me were (to me) extreme emotional instability, which was too off putting to use regularly - could not play well with others.

Modafinil (and Adrafinil before that) - The concentration assistance is there for when I'm focused, but it doesn't seem to help me stay on topic - I'm still easily distracted. The upside is I can still play well with others, and if anything seem more energetic (I hit the gym every morning I use it). The reduced sleep effect is real, I went from an average of 6 hours a night to <4, and it feels like the regained time is still productive. I have no hard numbers around this, and not really sure how to build a baseline to compare to.

I'd like to see how I react to both together, but hesitant given my poor reaction to Adderall. When I was younger I remember preferring Ritalin over Adderall.

EDIT: Adding to the throwaway comment below, the long halflife of Modafinil is true, especially when trying to sleep. For me, after months of 3-4 days on a week, there seemed to be no long term issues with this, where days I had taken Modafinil I only slept 3-4 hours.

I definitely had issues with alcohol and Modafinil, where at my weight (220lbs) I could normally drink 3-4 pints to reach 'buzzed' status, this seemed to happen at 1-2 pints. This trend stayed consistent - and proper 'drunk' came much quicker. This had the effect of limiting my drinking, to the point where I would switch to light beers and stop drinking after 1-2. This has been positive to me, but a bit concerning as I hadn't read of that effect before.

jronald··on Massive, Illicit Bust of Edward Snowden Stuck to a War Monument in Brooklyn
My statement regarding approval was referencing the article: "The artists admit that Snowden probably wouldn’t approve of the project, since he never wanted the leaks to be about him, but they hope he’d understand why they did it."

Considering it was intended to be a temporary art installation, the MIT Hacks reference seems appropriate: " It is a traditional courtesy to leave a note or even engineering drawings behind, as an aid to safe de-installation of a hack."-nightworks

The difference is that this was intended to be temporary and decisions were made to ensure safe removal, which I appreciate, but no instructions were left to a staff, possibly unfamiliar with the removal procedures, leading to risk of damage to the monument.

I also think it unfair to assume the victims for which the memorial was for would believe this is a valid usage - while the theme is close, the artists are equating Prisoners of War losing their life in a situation they had no control over ( at that point), versus a situation very much in the hands of snowden (ignoring the injustices, there are and have been many decision open to him). Having researched a bit more, equating the situation of a single person, to the thousands (~11,500) who were effectively murdered due to the inhumane conditions of their captivity is distasteful at best.

This is an opinion I know, and I appreciate this is a civil conversation if unpopular. I urge more reading on the memorial itself and its reason.

jronald··on Massive, Illicit Bust of Edward Snowden Stuck to a War Monument in Brooklyn
Coopting memorials this way bothers me, especially in the case where the person being idealized would have been against it. I do appreciate the relevancy of the memorial being used. Using the location and its history as a running point for a demonstration / gathering would have been more impactful as well as being respectful to the purpose of the memorial.
jronald··on MailChimp threatens legal action against an open source side project
Thanks for clearing that up. I'm a little fuzzy on where that can be done - ie on github, if you set it to the MIT license, can you define the additional rules within the license section? does putting the "educational use only" anywhere on the page apply? I'm not a coder, and this normally would not apply to the work I do, but it is interesting seeing how these things play out.
jronald··on MailChimp threatens legal action against an open source side project
I'm off topic here, but I think this is more an artifact than common place anymore, right? While Mrs and Miss still exist, I've never seen them anywhere aside from formal invitations. (except my third grade teacher who required 'Mrs.', but that was almost 20 years ago)
jronald··on MailChimp threatens legal action against an open source side project
The response to MailChimp's letter is distasteful at best. I don't know how MailChimp found out about Luke's work, but I imagine having a Dev contact someone infringing on their work is not normal procedure for any company. Lawyers are paid to do this professionally, however Ms. Danin's letter goes above and beyond, illustrating the issues they have and their reasoning behind it. They could have had court documents (in the US anyways) show up at your door, or the site / files could have been forced offline by working with the host.

Your response reflects poorly on you. I would say it was fair to mention your employer as it's listed on your public github profile, and it isn't clear that your employer isn't aware. Additionally, I'd imagine you'll be receiving more removal requests from the other sites you replicate.

Also, releasing your files under the MIT license prohibits you from restricting them to "educational purposes", at least to my understanding, but I could be incorrect here.

jronald··on We just launched OpenSignal for iOS
Thanks for the reply. I've installed the android version and will play with it on my walk home through boston. Should be interesting :)

I do like that it shows billing cycle, however it appears to be off by ~2 weeks on my device.

jronald··on We just launched OpenSignal for iOS
I know this is referring to the iOS app, but can I ask why you require the permissions you do for the Android App?

I'm not sure why a network scanner needs access to my contact list, call log and SMS messages. Is this the only way to have access to usage meters? I would of thought they're exposed another way as android tracks that as well natively?

jronald··on Carmageddon now on iOS, free for first day
They've emailed kickstarter backers 2 or 3 times letting us know this was going on. Kind of a customer loyalty bonus as well.
jronald··on The Amazing iOS 6 Maps
My Motorola droid is able to run Android 4.1 - not a super snappy experience, but it does run. It released in october of 2009. Every feature in 4.1 works on it. I don't have the "fun" apple is pulling with a guessing game on what features work on what phones: http://www.apple.com/ios/feature-availability/

Also, while the 3GS (June 09) is getting ios6, the original ipad (April 2010) is not. Apple will abandon their equipment just as fast if it suits them.
