k4rli··on We've built an open-source feature flag server for 11 years
End of the day it seems like only semantics. Feature-flag and a boolean "setting" to enable a feature are the same thing.
k4rli··on GitHub's new Git storage architecture
A manager somewhere will read this and require similar output from their team.
k4rli··on New Withings Users Must Pay $99/Year for Apple Health Syncing
Pretty sure it's already possible. I have a small service running on homelab that syncs all the withings data to garmin. Has needed no attention in years and just works.
k4rli··on Paramount Skydance has completed its $111B merger with Warner Bros. Discovery
When the editor for this blog lives in the country that is being criticised [0], this article is furthest thing from seeking objectivity.

k4rli··on Powerless F1 drivers frustrated by Bahrain F1 software glitch
Last fuel related death was in 1986. The incident in 2020 with Grosjean's fireball was a 67g impact. If the car were to only have one big EV battery, which it almost is in current regulations, then in such a crash would very likely get punctured and be even riskier fire. So to answer the question, no.

At end of the day, it is a motorsport and it will always have its risks.

k4rli··on Tesla takes on $30B in credit as it approaches unprofitability
Do you swap out the rotors anytime there's rust on them?
k4rli··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
Source: the aggressors
k4rli··on PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock
Morphe/revanced with good configuration makes the official app super nice. Swipe controls, full OLED, no shorts, Sponsorblock.

Default app for sure is an abomination and so are most Androids straight out of the box before debloat + clean rom + root.

k4rli··on How we learned to stop worrying and love campus surveillance
Will you ever get tired of defending your precious Isr*el? The article did not even make it about "jews".

Not sure what the serial-number looking acronym is about.

k4rli··on Classified Estimates Show the NSA Is Paying Billions to Test AI Models
Surely not impossible for them to have already cracked it.

Also not impossible that they have had much better models than OAI/Anthropic flagships for years, and we're only being dripfed upgrades to subpar ones. Improbable but possible.

k4rli··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
Nothing was "started" by him joining. Name was the same and they were already producing car(s). He did bring his skills for fraud and puffery though.
k4rli··on Which tools do Claude, Codex and Cursor choose? We measured 17k runs to find out
The comments there just seem like agents talking to each other.
k4rli··on No AI Fridays
He was just taking the piss, being both OP and the boss of htmx.
k4rli··on Hunting Down a Go Runtime Bug on 32-Bit Embedded Systems
Reason why it's super hard for juniors at the moment. For "agents" to produce good results, the operator must have the experience to direct it in the right direction and properly validate the output.

I've had some weird bug investigations where it has suggested wrong fixes confidently multiple times before arriving at the actual fix. Only with extra details from manual testing did we arrive at the real bug. The ~5 first suggested fixes would've hidden the root cause even more.

k4rli··on Tether: iMessage, SMS, etc. on Linux
Or leave the walled garden entirely. GrapheneOS has all the same stuff.
k4rli··on Show HN: Typebase – A single-folder back end you write in TypeScript
I've only had experience in one full-stack project with supabase RLS so experience is limited. However it seemed like a mess. Seems much more human-maintainable to have a classic spring/golang backend. For sure in some projects, esp mobile apps, it makes more sense, and fable-level models might also keep it from being full spaghetti.

Also Supabase at that time wasn't reliable and it's not really made for self-hosting. Felt almost as bad as Github stability these days.

Still, based on this limited experience, I've been avoiding RLS and supabase.

k4rli··on Tell HN: PayPal Blocks GrapheneOS
So both Paypal and Visa/Mastercard get a cut of every transaction. At least with a regular virtual card Paypal isn't getting their cut. Having Paypal as a middleman will make chargeback requests harder as well since they likely need to be negotiated with before the actual card issuing bank.
k4rli··on License plate reader searches should require a warrant
Computer isn't quite it, internet connection itself seems closer. Then again an Android phone with terminal emulator could also run attacks.

Seems like a nonsense comparison either way. These cameras are in public places and provide surveillance intel for governmental entities.

k4rli··on GrapheneOS recommended for domestic abuse victims
Obsidian might be even greater for notes. Looks beautiful, and it's super immersive on OLED especially. Worth trying for sure.

Tap to scroll might be possible to get also. Haven't felt need for it when it takes a few regular scrolls anyway.

k4rli··on Sony deletes more movies from the accounts of people who ‘bought’ them
If it's something worth watching, then very unlikely. 99.9% of movies/tv simply aren't.
k4rli··on SpaceX stock erases all its gains and slides below IPO price in intraday trading
Almost all of their promises since start have just been corporate puffery and pure vaporware. Going to Mars, point-to-point Earth travel, Starship, reusable rockets...

Same with all his other companies.

k4rli··on If you're a button, you have one job
Using AOSP-based Android roms, I haven't noticed any big changes in years. In current "android 16" and my old "android 10" device one couldn't really tell a difference. Very simple UX, no bloatware apps, no hidden drawers coming out from sides.

I've tried the vendor ones by Samsung, OnePlus etc with fresh devices and this Android experience really is awful.

k4rli··on Crawling BitTorrent DHTs for Fun and Profit [pdf]
Runs fine at home. I've indexed 20M+ torrents in last few months running it during the day. With Prowlarr (or similar) it could easily replace other indexers.
k4rli··on Claude Tag
"Major rewrite" from a company that has its products vibe-coded is hardly a worthy measurement.
k4rli··on Lithuanian startup launches open-source network to detect Shahed-type drones
Sounds like a simple app with mic input being sent to a yamnet-like audio classification model for a single target detection. Hardly anything innovative?
k4rli··on US holds off blacklisting DeepSeek, more than 100 firms deemed security risks
It's hard to call either side good. It can be argued that the side which had the highest powers and oligarchs implicated in Epstein files, and which has also threatened attacks on European nations, isn't the better option. Also the nation which actively funds the war in middle-east.
k4rli··on Hetzner Price Adjustment
On netcup I'm paying only 9€ for better specs. AMD 4 cores and 8GB ram. Worth looking at their offers/deals section.
k4rli··on WSL 2 is getting faster Windows file system access
Of course just a personal experience, but I feel like I'm getting a much more stable experience with AMD in arch+sway/i3. Some of my friends with RTX5080s and such frequently crash on alt-tab or just simply from opening Steam overlay in their W*ndows setup.

Even with tiled windows I haven't had any game crash like that once. "alt-tab" equivalent takes 1ms and it just works. I can throw around the game window between workspaces, resize etc.

It's worth giving it a try. Unfortunate if games with certain AC setups are wanted, like GTA:O or LOL, but I can live without them.

k4rli··on Meta launches Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp subscriptions
Okay, what are the reasons? It's difficult to see how Meta is in any way more trustworthy than the country which Telegram is from. I trust TG secret chats much more than Whatsapp's supposed e2e.
k4rli··on Creatine raise brain energy levels and slow Alzheimer's cognitive decline by 30%
In a similar situation, I do take creatine. However vo2max will reduce simply due to the waterweight gains.
